Questions & Answers

WILLIAM B : My two Questions: 1) Is the ball head a quality head. Dose it pan smoothly? 2) Are the two colums colums (short, long) eadily changed? Thank you.WILLIAM B : When I say "Colums", I am speaking of the "Center Colum" that has to be intechanged for "Low settings" of the tripods legs. Do they intechange easily... thats the question? Thanks. BillNASSIN D : The head works well, but has some cheap plastics in it, especially the plate release which broke twice when used in cold weather. (I live in Boston). Adorama replaced the tripod both times under warranty but I ended up replacing the head with a Manfrotto. If you live in a warm climate it should do well, if not you may or may not have the cracking issues I had. They may have resolved this by now, I got the tripod 2 years ago. It's held up well, very light and the shafts exchange easily. LORI F : We are very happy with this tripod. EDWIN C : I have not had any problems with the ball head, ynd it does pan smoothly. The long column changes fairly quickly as I have accomplished this proceedure in 20 degree weather.DWAYNE K : I think that for the money, the ball head is an awesome deal. It will pan smoothly. This head holds position well. I shoot with a Canon 7D and have loaded it with a 580EXii flash and a fairly heavy zoom and the thing doesn't move. The version I have didn't come with the two different columns, so I can's speak to the ease of changing them. Everything else about this tripod is well designed and easy to figure out, though.FRANK S : The pistol grip head moves almost too easily. At times, for a very long distance shot, it can be a little difficult to set it perfectly without a try or two if you try to control the movement with just the grip. Overall this is a very nice and sturdy unit. I am not sure what you mean by colums, but from the limited use I have had with this tripod, everything works without too much difficulty. The legs adjust very easily. It is a bit heavier than I expected for a carbon fiber unit, but not bad for it's size and the case has a very nice padded strap, if you carry it.GERARD L : Yes the pistol drip ball head is a quality head. It holds my sony alpha a77 with 16-50 2.8 lens NO problem. I'm not familiar with question 2. It's a sturdy user friendly tripod. I love it.MAXIM F : They are, just unscrew the weight hook assembly and remove. Easy but the thread is fine, so it may take a few trys to engage it. No big deal. The ball head is great for 10lb and under. Going to the limit makes it hard to balance the weight of the camera and the lens. Attach the lens to the tripod directly, balances better. Great tripod for the $$$. KEN G : Not really but for the $99.00 I paid for it I got a ggod deal. I have not changed the columnsBRADLEY G : Bill, I'm not sure what your definition is for a quality head but it does pan smoothly and it holds my camera securely. The 2 columns are easily changed. I have been quite happy with this Tripod and pistol grip.GLENN S : This is a fairly decent tripod. Its a little short at the highest but Ive had no problems extending and using so far. I removed the pan head and use it on my Induro ( a taller tripod) tripod most of the time. I like it other than I wish there was a little more space for the hand to grip. I use it with a long lens at times (a 120 x 300 F2 on a Canon 7D) and have had no problems with the weight of that lens. Good for the priceJOHN ADAM P : This was my first *real* tripod purchase, having only used my parents tripod ... which was probably 30 years old and those belinging to friends who are camera enthusiasts. I've use the tripod with a Nikon D90 - with a 18-105 lens (I'm not sure what that weight is, but its decently heavy). Q: 1) Is the ball head a quality head. Dose it pan smoothly? A: YES, its great. Super easy to move and the trigger locks in the position. I did not have any issues and am very pleased. Q: 2) Are the two colums colums (short, long) easily changed? A: I haven't used the tripod in the past 3-4 months, but I never had and do not remember any issues with extending, locking and retracting the legs. I'm not sure what you mean by easily changed - because the ball trigger rotates 360, I don't see a reason whey you would need to change/swap any of the legs. This is a solid, stable, and well made tripod that absolutely impresses and fulfills all of my (albeit amateur) needs.
WILLIAM B : Dose the ball head stay in place after being set? (Drift or not?)BARRY G : Yes, if you stay within or a little bit below the weight limit of the head.MELISSA J : I would assume that it does, but I don't own this tripod. I think there are much better choices. I prefer Feisol over all other brands. Really Right Stuff is good as is Gitzo, I have owned and used both of them, but prefer Feisol. Bill Jones RICHARD G : I've only used this tripod a few times, but it has held its position.CHAD B : It does not drift at all, even with our Canon 5d and large lens.KAREN F : Yes. DANIEL U : it has been solid in the two plus years i've used it....ANDREW H S : Yes it stays in place. No drift.SHEILA K : We have not ever noticed it drifting after being set.JENA J : Not in my experience. I replaced the one I bought already.DAVID G : This head holds very well and their load capacity is pretty accurate for the complete system. Love this tripod AND price. I just purchased a $120 manfrotto pistol grip head for another tripod because of my experience with the Sunpak grip. Sent back the Manfrotto. No nearly as easy to control as the Sunpak.DAVID G : The pistolgrip head on this tripod is great. I use it with a 50-150 sigma and a 400 mm canon lens with no problems. Its also much more compact that others. Just tried a much more expensife Manfrotto pistol grip that was not nearly as easy to depress or control. Great tripod/head combo without breaking the bank.BRUCE B : That hasn't been a problem for me during a shoot but it does somehow work loose at times.WILLIAM P : Does stay locked - even with heavy load.GENE L : I have had this tripod for about 2 years and use it for a 35mm Nikon DSLR with a rather large 18-200mm lens and with a Nikon 35mm film camera with assorted lenses (the film setup is heavier than the DSLR by 8-12 oz.) and I have never had a problem with the ball slipping once the hand grip is released.KATHLEEN C : Yes it stays in place. Great tripod for the priceDONALD S : I have experienced no drift or movement when the ball head is set.LENI F : No. I found drift to be a very significant problem and I replaced the ball head. I have a friend who is mechanically inclined (usually does wonders) we tried tightening, cleaning, adjusting etc but even he couldn't fix the problem. I finally bought a different head.ROBERT P : The ball head on my tripod has worked perfectly and does not drift. I use mine daily and has been great.
KEITH K : I have had a Sunpack Pro 523PX tripod for about three years and have been VERY pleased with the quality. I recently decided to purchase a Sunpack Pistol Grip head to replace the Ball head and so far am also VERY pleased with this addition. Only problem now is that the carrying case that came with my original 523PX Ballhead is too small for what I suppose is now my 523PX2 with a Pistol Grip head. Any idea where I might find a 523PX2 carrying case? I've tried looking for Sunpacks website but didn't have any luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated !ESTEVEZ S : When the tripod is fully closed, what is it's length?LENI F : I have no problems with my tripod and pistol grip unit. The case that came with it accommodates both with no problem. I bought the tripod, case and head all at the same time so Sunpak must have the correct case.GENE L : Unfortunately, I can't help. I bought the tripod with the pistol rip head and the carrying case it came with fit it well. All I can assume is that the case that came with the tripod you initially bought didn't anticipate and upgrade to the pistol head.BRUCE B : I have the Sunpak case that came with mine about 18 months ago. Fits fine.SHEILA K : Dear Keith, I am sorry that I cannot help you in your quest. I have used the 523PX with the Pistol Grip without using a case and carrying it attached to my back pack. Thank you for the question and I wish you luck in the solution.WIEN H : Sunpak or adorama may has it. The one with pistol grip I bought which includes the carry case has not size issue, it just fits right as customer made. You may need to ask adorama sales is it possible to purchase it alone?

Carbon fiber, BUT

I think this review may be pointless as I thought I bought the tripod on closeout. It not rigid at all. I have to use a cable on the camera as pushing the shutter causes shakes. It is light though.

Great CF Tripod with light-duty Ballhead

Before I reviewed this product, I wanted to get some genuine, time-tested field experience with it. At this stage, I've used the Sunpak PRO 523PX2 for a little over a year mostly for landscape, night shots and macro photography. Due to the types of photos I'm taking, I usually have to hike quite a ways before I start shooting. I carry this tripod in its included carrying case (which has an internal zippered compartment I use for filters, cable release and bottled water) everywhere I go. I really appreciate the tripod's light weight and the padded case, especially after lugging around an old aluminum tripod strapped to my pack with bungee cords for years. At the time of purchase, this was the only reasonably-priced, carbon-fiber tripod I could find which extended over 5 feet. Fully extended it works well in most situations. At the top height, it can be a little shaky in a medium-stiff wind. During the setup and teardown, the legs unfold fast with the easy-to-use controls and afterward, it comes down just as quickly. The ballhead includes a pistol grip and quick release plate which are extremely convenient and fast-use during setup, adjustment while shooting and teardown. The tech specs rate the ballhead at 6.1lbs. The top load I've ever been able to put on it is just shy of 5lbs and it has deteriorated over the year. A DSLR & zoom lens combo causes the ballhead to droop. For most of the year, I've held it in place with my hand or adjusted the tripod legs in a way that I could lean the ballhead (with DSLR & lens attached) on a tripod leg to stabilize it. At this point, after adjusting every screw I can find, it's barely able to hold a DSLR & 50mm lens (less than 3 pounds). This is the primary reason I gave this product 2.5 stars. A month ago, I gave up and bought a Manfrotto 496RC2 ballhead to replace the pistol grip ballhead. The Manfrotto is not a pistol grip and its quick release plate has a quirky safety feature that makes it not as 'quick' as the Sunpak quick release plate but, the 496RC2 (rated at 13lbs) SOLIDLY holds every DSLR/lens combo I have. To summarize, based on my experience with this product: I'm very happy with the carbon-fiber tripod. I give it a BIG recommend. The pistol grip ballhead that accompanies it would probably work well for those who shoot with a point-and-shoot or some of the lightweight mirrorless outfits. If you own a DSLR and shoot with a zoom lens, you'll likely have to buy a different ballhead.

somewhat dissapointed

Everything was suppossed to be perfect considering one don´t spend too much on a carbon fiber tripod but the thread on the quick release platform was very bad done so it´s impossible to attach it to any camera. Unfortunatelly I noticed that when returning to Mexico from my shopping trip to US. It seems the brand never paid atention to quality control. Without that single screw a tripod un absolutelly useless. Sometimes it´s worth buying a serious brand regardless the money.

Excellent, sturdy, reasonably priced

Use for low light/time exposures, closeup (flowers, insects) and wildlife tele shooting. This is a firm tripod with a very tight yet quickly adjusted pistol grip ball head. Leg latches are quick to release and adjust, making set up - take down fast. Has held up well in the wet and dusty environs I'm often in.

Very pleased

This is an easy to use tripod. The quick release offers flexibility, and it is lighter than my old aluminium tripod. It's always a good idea to insure things are secured prior to using the tripod, and if you look inside the carry case you will find a zippered compartment with the operating instructions inside.

Very Easy to Use

Use mostly for scenery photos with some shots of birds flying through. The pistol grip makes following the flight of birds very easy. Handy for wildflower photos also.

Good tripod, but lacks a manual

Most of the knobs and levers are pretty easy to figure out. But one of them was stuck so hard I didn't know whether it was supposed to be moved or not (I eventually did get it to budge, but with a lot of force). An instruction manual would have been helpful, but one didn't come with it, and I can't find one on the web. There are still a few things that I can't quite figure out.

A great travel tripod.

With the exception of the quick release plate, which seems almost too large to insert into the quick release quickly, this is a fine product so far. I have used it for macros, telephotos, wildlife and other pictures. If the ball head holds up over time with my relatively heavy tele lens, this will have been the best photo purchase I have ever made.

Tripod works wonders

This was a gift for my wife who is a photo enthusiast. The tripod works very well and only complaint is the screw holding the ballhead on can be mistakenly turned allowing the unit to become lose on the tripod. This can lead to the camer (a Nikon D7000 to float).

Sunpak Pro Excellent Value

Lightweight carbon fibre with fine quality ball head. Pistol Grop makes composing quick...holds camera firmly. I use it with 35mm film cameras and DSLR with 18-200 mm lens. Should handle most DSLR equipment.Carrying case and padded legs makes it a great choice for hiking and backpacking. I have owned it for 11 months and had no trouble with the grip or ball head.

Excellent tripod!

A great tripod at a great price. This was my first pistol-grip tripod and I'll never use any other kind. Moves so smoothly and locks into place tight as soon as you release. Works just as well for horizontal or vertical shots. My only complaint is that it was a bit heavier than I was expecting. But other than that I give it two thumbs up!

This is a great product and easy to use.

I have used this for taking pictures of landscape, birds, deer and night photos of the moon. It allows me quick tracking of moving objects with the pistol grip and the combination of the pistol grip and ball head grip strongly and are very stable. I decided to chose this tripod because it had larger diameter legs than the next smaller version and am glad I did.

Well made. I only wish it came with a ball head and not the pistol grip. I ended up taking the pistol grip off and attaching a ball head to it.
