Questions & Answers

James M : No mention anywhere, but I assume the head unscrews from the tripod? I want to, at times, use the head on another "field" tripod with more flexibility.GEORGE D : Hi James, Yes, it does unscrew from the tripod. But, remember, it has a small socket. Check the specs for the ball socket size before you buy. It's a great tripod. Have fun, George .MARCOS N S : Yes, the whole head can be taken out... although they way is built i dont think it can support another type of head.SCOTT G : No, this is pretty much an all-in-one unit. The head isn't meant to be removed.BILL V : I have not tried to take the head off the tripod but it it is light enough to use as a field tripod. I have used it in the field several times with no weight issues.
KARIN Z : do I need to buy a quick release plate for a video cam separately?Grat C : No it has one alreadyMICHAEL B : No it's comes with the plate good item great price.HEINRICH S : As far As I know, NO. It comes with one quick release plateJIM S : No, the unit comes with a quick release plate that should fit most any still or video camera.SCOTT G : The 'pod comes with a quick release plate. It actually attaches in either direction, so that no matter the configuration of your camera, it'll be pointed to the front when attached.BILL V : This tripod comes with a quick release plate. You do not need to buy a seperate one.JOHN H : A great tripod. The best thing is its very light. Head works very well, very smooth. I bought another one.MARCOS N S : No, it came with the tripod.
THOMAS K : Other reviewers have noted the sloppy fit of the quick release plate. As of June 4, 2012, has the manufacturer resolved this issue?MARCOS N S : I dont have any problem with the fit of the plate. To be honest, for the price, this is the best tripod.GEORGE D : It has NEVER been an issue with me, and I bought mine over a year ago. The Quick Release Plate locks down just fine. "For the money", this is one of the finest tripods I've ever owned, and I've been shooting for over 40 years.Grat C : It is sloppy only one way. Flip it 180 degrees and it is snugANDREW R : Unfortunately there is no indication that the manufacturer has made any changes to this unit.

Solid video tripod

Rec'd a gift cert for Christmas, so I came on-line and ordered this as a replacement for my primary vid tripod which is falling apart. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality and sturdiness for the price. The lever that locks the plate on top of the 'pod is super tight. I had to use a pry bar to open it the first time - no exaggeration. Plate fits back on either direction, which is nice. It takes some weight (or a good push down) to snap the lock back into place. My Sony HD cams are only slightly larger than the plate, so I'm sure it would support larger cams quite easily. Legs lock solidly, but levers are easy to pull back up for release. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who was looking for a decent video tripod but didn't want to spend big bucks for a "professional grade" pod. I haven't used it much yet, but it looks like it's going to be one of my better purchases.

Solid, Stable & Light

The only flaw is the Quick release plate. It has a small amount of play when locked down. A couple of small pieces of felt fixed that. I am mounting a Celestron C-90 Maksutov Cassegrain spotting scope to this tripod. This Sunpak holds it easily and guiding is almost perfect. The ease of adjusting the tensioners was a surprise. When unlocked the head wants to return to a neutral position. The more you pan back and up, the more weight it seems to compensate for. No additional tensioner adjustment is necessary. Unlike some of my other tripods this one can actually point to zenith as well. Some manufacturers claim 10 to 20 pounds of capacity, Sunpak delivers with this one. One last note: To level this tripod you do not need to adjust the legs just loosen the large knob under the head, center the bubble and tighten. Really a lot of design innovation went into this tripod. [...]
