MCALISTER H : Does this diffuse as much as an umbrella? How would the coverage be if I used this AND an umbrella?FRANCIS M : It does diffuse and soften the light some but not as much as an umbrella would. The reflected light from the umbrella diffuses much better. Never tried to combine them both.MICHAEL F : I don't think it would provide the same diffusion as an umbrella. Depending on your desired results, and the comparative intensity of the source lamps, you would certainly have coverage. Depends on what you are shooting also. Used alone, I find they don't diffuse enough to reduce reflections off shiny surfaces such as those on many ceramic objects.RICHARD J H : The diffuser works very well. I use mine for the fill lights. As far as a comparison with an umbrella, I think one woud need to try both with the same subject or object and study the results. Col HuckDOUGLAS S : I use two fluorescent photofloods with these diffusers, and they do not provide as much diffusion as an umbrella, but the light is softer, and the price is right... Over, Doug SeeleyCHUCK A : The diffuser might be softer than your umbrella depending upon the size of the umbrella and the lining, ie, silver vs white. You'll have less light loss from the diffused light since it's direct rather than reflected. Using the diffuser and an umbrella probably won't gain you more diffusion but you'll lose a lot more light with both.

Good diffusion of light

USE ON 10" SMITH VICTOR reflector as overhead light in product photography. I use 5000K spiral bulbs available from Adorama with a socket extension available at hardware stores. Gives good consistent light easy to read with a meter. Cuts light available by about one F stop

"Don't fight the light" use the light

I use my DP10 clip diffuser as a light controller in a small studio setup. When lighting from my main light source in certain shots reveal harsh skin tones, I can quickly change the constant light output using DP10 to diffuse/control the amount of light on my subject.
