This is a basic entry level kit for the beginner. It was very difficult to figure out how to assemble at first, never having owned or used a studio kit before. After figuring out how to assemble the pieces, it didn't take long to get some nice results. The quality of the equipment is good but the combination of products is not quite what I would want in an entry level kit. The barn door light is useless for what I want and need of a kit. The kit would be much better served with a small boom and hair light or a soft back light to illuminate a back drop. I still haven't figured out the best use for it.

The portability is great; I fit this boxed light set in a Neon trunk easily with other equipment. Even the case has wheels for easy mobility. I have bounced the light from 15 feet high ceilings with great results. The light temperature is great to work in combination with indirect sunlight (window light) which I like to use in portraits. However, all depends on what you like to project on your portraits. I have the Smith-Victor Flash Kit for two years and, so far, is working great with no flaws. I move it around since I do on location photography and it has withstand the treatment. Of course, I handle it with normal care just like any other equipment. This light kit is a lot for the money and, if you add other items, such as reflectors and certain umbrellas, you have a nice on location set for portraits, large groups, commercial and ther photography you can imagine. Remember, ligh is light no matter the source. But, for the money, you can not beat the versatility of this light kit. As a photographer, your imagination is the limit.

After purchasing a used set of another brand, I knew it was time to make an investment. I chose this set based on number of heads, accessories, portability and cost. I have the heads set up in my studio most all the time, unless I shoot on location. I shoot portraits and commercial work in studio and weddings and other events on location. I have had great luck with this set and I would absolutely recommend it to someone like myself who wants a reliable set of lights without spending a fortune.
