Love the filter and the price. Can tame harsh sunlight for cool lighting effects with off-camera flash and can get slow shutter speeds in bright sun. Glass is pristine. Screws on/off lens easily. Handy stop markings on perimeter. Turns easily to dial ND power up/down. Great design. Bought an 82mm and step-down rings so I can use this one VND with all my glass. Won't be leaving my kit any time soon. Came with a really nice case, too.

The product sent to me was open box used

Even though the ND Filter is good quality, the one I got from Adorama was used with fingerprints all over it. Never to buy from Adorama again

Smooth and nicely packaged

By

Just received this and have not used it yet. What strikes me first is the excellent storage pouch in which it comes and the smoothness of its operation. Re reports of the dreaded X, the documentation accompanying it clearly explains that turning the filter past its indicated "max" will cause the X banding. What it boils down to, if the documentation is correct, is if you don't want the X then don't set the filter beyond its indicated max. All indications point to genuine satisfaction with this product.

ND filter review

Use the product to ;over light gathering to enable long exposures. Filter works great. I did not notice the "X" effect when shooting with maximum 8 stops light reduction

Physically larger than 58mm

By

I have one of the 77mm versions of this variable neutral density for cutting sunlight to manageable levels when shooting video outdoors. It works fine. I assume this 58mm version will work with typical Tiffen quality as well. For those of you who might want to use it in conjunction with your factory lens hood, forget it. The attaching thread is 58mm in diameter, but the outer diameter is 70.1 mm -- way bigger than the sunshade. The front ring is threaded, but apparently only so the retaining ring can hold the front polarizer in place. The front thread measures out to 66.34mm to the inside of the thread (top of thread), or about 66.5 mm to the bottom of the thread groove. 67mm lens hoods exist and may fit, but not sure. For my 77mm filter, I found a spare rubber lens shade that happened to be the same outer diameter as the filter and attached it with some electrician's tape. Works fine for longer lenses like the 70-200mm but vignettes on the 24mm end of the 24-70mm. May need a matte box.

Great

Bought this for my recent trip to St. Lucia. Used it to shoot waterfalls and breakers on the rocks. It worked flawlessly. Being able to control the density made things a lot easier..

Works great

By

I use this on the 17-40mm and 50mm via the step-up adapter rings. It has solid construction and markings on the ring to help you to adjust the value. The one issue is that at the extreme range, I see the black corners effect. With the 50mm, it seems to be just fine.

Excellent product! Very high-quality.

By

This is an excellent product due to its high-quality, usefulness, and low price. It's easily adjustable. Its variable settings allows one to compensate for different light conditions. All metal and glass construction. It screws directly onto the lens front. Highly recommended!

Nifty tool!

By

I've used this to shoot waterfalls in bright sunlight and was really pleased. It was great to have just one filter that gave me a range of options, rather than the set of filters I used to carry. I didn't have any problem at all with odd color casts or distortion when using it within the recommended minimum and max. It would be nice though if the filter had stops at those min. and max points - if you aren't looking at the settings, it is easy to go past them.
