Questions & Answers

KARLA O : can this filter be used for solar eclipse photos?Jason H : Baader solar film is specifically designed for viewing the sun-I wouldn't use anything else as some other methods might seem safe but still allow damaging uv radiation to pass through to your eyes. Baader solar film is cheap and effective and protects your eyes completely.Ron S : Yes but you will need more ND with it. I just used this and the fallowing for the Venus transit and also the solar eclipse last month with adding a standard ND4 + ND2 that i already had with it and is was perfect. Spectacular images! If you buy a ND6 or ND8 with it you will have great flexibility with your solar images if you stack them.Matt C : Absolutly Not! Even though this filter attenuates visible light, like most photographic filters, it will not block the broad spectrum of light produced by the sun. Unfortunately the only safe way to image the sun is with a specifically dedicated filter.MARY H : have not used this filter for a solar eclipse. MaryPAUL C : If the timing allows a few shots during the eclipse, I would recommend that the filter be used during the first two and then removed for the next few. Also be careful to use the proper ISO for each set. Also, if you are able to view the photos on a monitor (camera screen, computer, or printer) during the shooting, adjustments to ISO might be made. Good luck!NORMAN G : Sorry, I can't answer that question. Karla needs to be cautious when focusing on sun since its brightness can easily cause blindness if insufficient filtering is used.JOEY S : I really dont think so. I used a welders mask once years ago. It worked perfect.
Tony R : HOW THICK IS THIS FILTER, AND WWILL IT BE OK ON A CANON 16-35MM WIDE ANGLE LENS?ROBERT T : I have this filter and have no vignetting with a12-24mm lens

Tiffen W77IRND21 77mm Filter

Did a test shot. WB set to sun. Focus set to manual. Aperture set to f/16. ISO set to 200. Mounted on tripod with shutter release cable. No filter - the shutter speed was 1/30 sec. With filter, shutter speed 2.5 seconds. Approx 6x exposure time, which matches advertised ratio of 1:128. HOWEVER, the shot with the filter had a decided greenish-aqua color cast. This color cast can be removed easily in post processing.

Absolutely essential for DSLR Filming

These are the #1 piece of gear to grab for shooting on DSLR's during bright, sunny lighting conditions. The whole series of IRND filters by Tiffin allow you to shoot at shallow depth of field to create that iconic, filmic look.

good filter for long exposure

Using it as a standalone and also in combination with another ND filter to further increase the stops; minimal tint

You can capture the perfect shot even in the brightest conditions with the Tiffen W77IRND21 77mm Filter. This high-quality, durable filter combines the benefits of Neutral Density (ND) and Infrared (IR) technology to deliver crisp, clean images without compromising the wide color gamut captured by your camera's sensor. With a density of 2.1 (7 stop), it effectively reduces the ISO to 1/128, allowing for longer exposures or wider apertures to achieve stunning visual effects such as a shallow depth of field or motion blur in bright environments.

Crafted from Water White glass, renowned for its optical clarity, the Tiffen W77IRND21 ensures vibrant colors free from IR contamination. This versatile filter is an essential tool for photographers who demand effective control over lighting conditions, providing a reliable solution for both outdoor photography and challenging lighting scenarios.

The filter's design addresses the issue of color casting, as noted in user reviews, by allowing for easy correction in post-production, offering greater latitude for editing. Its thin profile and low distortion characteristics are appreciated by professionals and enthusiasts alike, ensuring that image quality is not compromised.

Whether used as a standalone ND filter or in combination with others to further increase exposure control, the Tiffen W77IRND21 is a testament to Tiffen's reputation for producing high-quality filters. It's an ideal choice for photographers who require effective light reduction without sacrificing the integrity of their images. Choose the Tiffen W77IRND21 77mm Filter for its unparalleled ability to maintain the fidelity of your photography in any lighting condition.

Tiffen WW IRND Filter Features

  • High quality filter to prevent the color shift caused by the sensitivity of today's digital sensors
  • Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a 10,000th of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings
  • The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations
  • Natural Density Filters enables slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
  • Natural Density Filters decreases depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
  • Natural Density Filters decreases the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
  • Natural Density Filters allows cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
  • Minimizes IR Contamination of Images
