VC (Vibration Compensation) VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure hasbeen simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.
New VC system (moving coil method)
Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positio ned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.
About the ultrasonic motor
In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

I just purchased the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 with a Canon mount today. It is sharper than my Canon 24-105mm f4 which is sharper than every Canon 24-70 f2.8 series one I have tried. It is just a fraction sharper than my Canon 17-55 f2.8. Unlike my Tamaron 17-50mm f2.8 VC, the autofocus is fast and silent. The color is also great. With f2.8 and IS it is the best of both worlds. After all of the anticipation surrounding this lens, I was very disappointed in it's performance over all. This is a relatively expensive lens, especially compared to other Tamron lenses, so expectations were high. This is a relatively expensive lens, especially compared to other Tamron lenses, so expectations were high. I have used and really liked other Tamron lenses that include the 70-200 2.8, the 17-50 2.8, 28-75 2.8 and the amazing 60mm macro and they are all considerably sharper than this optic. After my initial test shots done with a variety of subjects, f stops and lighting, the performance seemed good until the images were uploaded where they proved to be all over the map in sharpness. Maybe one out of ten images were reasonably sharp. I packed the lens up for return. The next day, feeling like I didn't give it a proper chance and thinking maybe it was user error, I did another similar , but more extensive test with the same results. Maybe I have a bad copy, but Tamron shouldn't be sending out bad copies of a product that is getting so much attention. One more note: When I used the VC feature and focused on a distant object and then pointed the lens downward and focused on a nearby object, it would make a groaning noise.

I am a portrait and wedding photographer. This lens is amazing. It is fast and amazing in low light. The bokeh is beautiful. If you are looking for a lens with tons of versatility, this is the lens!
I have been looking for a lens that I can put on the camera and go out for they day. I bought this only a week ago but I've used it already for a photoshoot. Amazing lens to use. The colors are vibrant, the photos are clear and crisp and razor sharp. I'm so glad that I purchased it. So far the only thing I noticed was in lower light it did search for focus one time. So in closing stop reading this review and buy it.
I've used this lens for six months so have a good idea of it's performance. After hearing all the hype I was hoping for better sharpness than my 24-105, but found it not as good as the Canon at any aperture or focal length. The problem seems to be the AF, which is unreliable. If you focus manually the lens is as good as Canon, though not better (however, I seem to have a blueprint-perfect 24-105 copy, FWIW). My first copy stopped communicating with the camera after six shots, so it was exchanged. The second copy was okay in that regard, but had to go back to Tamron due to a non-functioning VC and wonky AF. The VC now works, but AF is only marginally better. I'll keep it because of the aperture and VC in low-light situations (which is really why I bought it) and because I'm okay using manual focus, but the Canon is much more reliable and a far better walk-around lens. In summary: a respectable special-purpose lens with very good optics and low-light capability, and poor AF with iffy build-quality. I'll probably send it to Tamron again in a couple of months in hopes they've sorted out the AF situation. BTW, Tamron Customer Service was excellent and the three-year warranty is very nice.
Ordered to satisfy my curiosity: I am a stong proponent of Canon glass for my Canons (1DsMIII's). After checking MTF (photozone.de and dpreview.com, et. al.) and other reviews I bought this unit. The autofocus is respectably quick, and the effects of the stabilization are quite obvious...but the lens is terribly soft in the periphery, and is not consistently sharp paraxially. I must have a bad copy, so have initiated an exchange. Problems seem worse using Automatic Focus Point Selection on the camera. Very intent on keeping a copy due to the image stabilization...
Great for night shooting handheld W/ my D610 @ 400 or 800 ISO. This lens is very sharp and well built. I would recommend it to anyone with a full frame camera. The lens is heavy but balances well on a small full frame like the D610.
Almost as good as the Canon, has image stabilization, 5 year warranty... half the price. What's not to like? Lightroom does a great job fixing any barrel distortion and vignetting. I gave it 4 stars because I had to send a copy back due to the IS causing blur. But Tamron fixed it very quickly and with no fuss.
I've had quite a lot of different lenses, from 24-70L to Tamron 28-75, 24-105L, e.t.c. Tamron 24-70mm VC doesn't disappoint. It builds on the success of the 28-75mm but adds a little bit of sharpness in addition to VC. Focusing is pretty fast, just like the Canon's L-version. The lens is very sharp in the center. One thing to keep in mind is vignetting. Since many professional photographers use this lens for wedding work, it even compliments their styles to bring the eye towards the subject. Also, the lens is big! It's bigger than the 24-70 II. If you're used to the old 28-75mm Tamron, this thing will be much-much bigger! It's build quality is very good as well. Tamron has added a protective ring around the metal mount. Vibration Compensation is adding 3-4 stops, which could mean ISO 1600 instead of 6400 in poor lit conditions. Overall I give it A+. If you know its limitations and could live with vignetting, this is an excellent glass for the money. Don't expect the sky to fall for $1,000. However, it's a great improvement if you're coming from 28-75 or 24-105L.
I love the lens. I am using it on a crop sensor, however, and hope to soon go full frame as it isn't wide enough for me on crop sensor. This lens was shipped very quickly and had no problems with the transaction!
I bought this lens to give me good coverage from 24-70mm. The fact this lens is equipped VC (Tamron talk for IS). This allows hand holding this lens while shooting street photography. This could only be done by using high ISO, and fast shutter speeds, when using Canon, and Sigma lenses. It is a bit heavy and will pull the camera forward, and down. So, you have hold the camera up as you shoot. On a Canon 7D the lens is great, on full frame, it gives some vignetting a the lower end. This not the case with a crop body. This lens, and image quality fills the gaps from 24mm-70mm, Canon L, fills the 70-200, and the Tamron 200-500 covers the spectrum for less $.
You should stop reading these reviews and just buy this lens. At $1000 less than Canon's f2.8 L series lens AND with image stabilization this is a true no-brainer. This lens hardly ever comes off my camera it's just that awesome.
