Great lens at a reasonable price

By

from Sequim WA  -  Photo Enthusiast

Read and watched lots of reviews and comparisons with the Canon 70-2002.8 IS II. Mostly said that the Tamron was about 95% as good. For me, the price was reasonable, and the savings over the Canon allowed me to buy a 70D (to replace my 60D)with the money saved. Is it perfect? Not exactly, but neither am I. Shot events with it wide open indoors at ISO 3200, and about 90+% keepers.

I have use this in Landscape, and plan on using this in events, sports, wedding, etc.. I like the easy way to go from manuel to auto focusing, the fast recovery. All in all it's a good lense and good price for me.

Amazing lens, amazing price

SUMMARY In addition to this lens, I have owned the Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 ED, the Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-s, the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR, and have used the Sigma f2.8 EX. This lens is on-par for sharpness with the Nikkor glass, and far better than the Sigma, which is a mess in terms of aberration and distortion at the extremes. I prefer it to all of the other lenses, including the Nikon VR. I got mine for about $400 used-if you shoot weddings or events, this is a must-have piece of glass. PROS Optical quality - Comparable to the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR Ease of use - the push/pull manual focus function is wonderful, with live view and this lenses ability to close focus, I rarely pull out my macro lens for anything but ring shots at a wedding, or if I find a weird insect or something. Price - Pretty obvious, here. Yes, you give up VR, but when shooting people, I am generally keeping my shutter speed above 1/160 anyhow. Anything else, I'm on a tripod. I'd love the VC version, but I can't justify the expense. 77mm filters Included tripod collar Included petal hood that works very well CONS Weight - Can't do much about this for a 3x f2.8 zoom with a lot of glass inside. Get a Black Rapid or similar strap and carry by the tripod collar! Autofocus performance - Tends to hunt in low light, slower than the Nikons, but better than the Sigma. Autofocus - Doesn't always nail focus, especially has trouble with eyes on a full-length subject. When it nails it, it's magic. I just have to be vigilant.

Love this Lens

By

I love this lens! I have also have the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC Zoom Lens and I love it too. Great lens for a great price. I use both my lens on my Canon Mark 5d III without any problems at all. The VC works wonderfully and the low light abilities are great!

Great value w/ 6 year warranty

By

from Florida  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I have other Tamron lenses for Nikon so I thought I would try this one as an alternative to an OEM lens. You get your monies worth and a 6 year warranty. Although it doesn't come with a soft case, it fits mounted to my D7100 in both my Kata and Click backpacks (lens hood turned backwards). Attached is one of the first pictures I took w/ a polarized filter. I'm fairly fit, so the weight isn't a problem however, I could see where it would get heavy shooting for a few hours without a mono or tripod.

Equal to Canon Image Quality

By

from Little Rock, AR  -  Pro Photographer

I photograph historic sites for my job and needed a lens that would allow me to shoot indoors where flash and tripods are not allowed. I've rented Canon's 70-200 f/2.8 IS and it's certainly a great lens, but a little outside my budget. I tried the Tamron version and I cannot see any difference in performance and image quality. The VC is astonishing! Hand-held the VC easily gains four stops and is perfect for indoor, low light situations. It's easily held, looks great, and captures incredible colors. Highly recommended!

This lens ROCKS!!!

By

from Santa Clara, UT  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I am so pleasantly surprised that this lens is so great! I've only had a chance to do two photo shoots with it, but it easily competes with it's Canon counterpart for $1000 less. I'm thrilled!!!
