Questions & Answers

Trevor H : I have the tokina10-17mm on a nikon 3100 camera in an underwater housing. My lens doesn't focus onto a point, for some reason. Should the lens auto focus on a point, or does it rely on the depth of field? TrevorCHARLES B : Never having used an underwater housing with this or any other lens, I can't be of much help. Have you tried the lens/camera combination on dry land? I use my lens with a D90 and a D200 and get very satisfactory results. Could there be a problem because (I believe) under water things appear closer than they actually are?JOSE G : Sorry, this lens are very sharp. has all qualities but I never worked i water I recommend it. THIS IS A GOOD BUYHEATHER P : The lens should focus, and you should be able to see that your subject is in focus. Are you having this problem only underwater? If so, perhaps you need a diopter for use with your particular housing.JOHN H : Probably not the lens. Make sure your camera is set for single servo focus and not continuous servo. Also make sure your camera isn't set for manual focus. Sometimes those settings can be inadvertently changes when changing lens or putting camera into the underwater housing. Another possible cause could be the low light under water. Use auxiliary lighting if necessary. Test the whole setup on dry land in bright light before shooting underwater.
First Name L : Hello,I would like to know if this lens is good for close up action shots in sports?.Thanks!JOHN H : It all depends on the sport and how close you want to get. Being a fisheye, this lens gives an extreme wide angle view with a lot of distortion, so you would have to get very close, and with most sports that would put you in the middle of the action with the risk of getting in the way of the competitors. If you are willing to set your camera up remotely and risk getting it damaged, you might be able to get some interesting perspectives for things like skateboarding, racing, bicycling, etc. For team sports, a telephoto lens would be the obvious choice.CHARLES B : Even at 17mm, there is some spherical distortion. At 10mm it increases considerably, but if you don't mind this, is could work. Of course, the field of view is very wide so you may find that you're including more in the frame than you really want, especially at 10mm. I used this lens almost exclusively while touring the old city sections of Amsterdam and Antwerp to make sure I could include the full height of building exteriors in tight quarters and church interiors.Douglas B : It would be great for that. It focuses a little slowly but it doesn't need to refocus often. All aspects considered, I think this is a very good lens and is really fun to use. Hope this helped.PATRICK P : If your subject is close, definately yes. I've used it for underwater action shots of sharks and the photos are amazing. But then again, you have to be close.LORRAINE D : That's the last thing I could imagine using it for. It's great for room views and extreme scenics. Would probably work well if you'd like an interesting photo of a playing field, be it baseball, football, etc., and you can get the entire place in the shot. But close up action, you'd have to be 6 inches from your subject to make that work...I wouldn't recommend it.
Shopper : ... What Nikon bodies does the Tokina 10-17 fisheye autofocus work with? (I have a D5000 and looking to switch bodies and the lens doesn't a/f with the 5000),GEORGE G : I have a D70 and it fits and works beautifully. Its my understanding that all Nikon body - SLR or DSLR - share the same lens mounting config.BARRY C : Not sure this is much help, but I know it works with the Nikon D7000 body because I have one and the lens fits that camera. Seems that the experts at Adorama should be able to answer this; if not, try a local photo shop.PATRICK P : I believe it fits most Nikon SLRs. I have a D90 and it works like a charm.JOHN H : Current DX models that have an autofocus motor in camera include D7000, D90, and D300s. The Tokina 10-17 will auto/focus with any of those three camera bodies.JON R : I use the Tokina 10-17 Fisheye with my Nilkon D90 and D300s with nno problems.JOSE G : You can not go wrong buying this lens . It works perfect with my D 200 It is a good investment. GOCHARLES B : I'm using this lens with my Nikon D100, D200 and D90. I just don't know whether or not the D5000's focusing linkage differs from my cameras. Perhaps there is info on the Tokina web site or their customer service.

Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens

Great lens. I bought it for underwater photography but have not had a chance to get it in the water. On land it does very well.

Great for wide-angle underwater photos.

This lens is outstanding for wide angle underwater photography, the reason I bought it. I use it behind an 8" dome with my Canon SL3 and it has produced some awesome photos. The only lens wider is a canon 8 - ?? and for the difference this lens is well worth it. Quick to focus and provides plenty of light.

Fishy Smishy...

Not a bad lens but not as good as new canon 8-15mm. Built nicely and performed well while i had it. I had no major issues with it, id recoment it for any intermediate photographers with an aps-c cam. Definately afordable and reliable.

Sharp, well-constructed

I use it sparingly as it's a nice effect for 2 or 3 images during a wedding such as room/table shots, church shots, large group shots (but too many would be overkill). It's also fun for funky landscapes.

Tokina 10 mm fisheye lens

Strictly u/w photography - works well on wide angle under water shots. It is suppose to work on macro photos as well - will try this next time I dive. It covers a very wide area and is easy to use. I use it on Canon 50D camera in a SeaSea housing. This lens is suppose to work with other models as well - suggest you check with camera manufacturer to make sure it will work on other models.

Outstanding for underwater photo

I bought this lens mainly for underwater use, after a web research in wich I found excelents reviews. I have the nikkor fisheye 16 and wanted to recover the angle I lost in using this lens in DX format camera. For underwater it is great to have the posibility to go from a 10 mm fisheye to a super wide 17 in the same dive. The pictures resulting after many dives are beautiful in terms of color and sharpness. I also took some videos with the Nikon D7000 and the result is excelent. For topside photography I found it also great. If you use it in 17 mm the usual curved lines of the fisheye are minimal so you can use it as a super wide angle also.

Get it all in

I use this lens mostly for underwater inside an underwater housing connected to my D300. I really like the coverage. Fast focus.

Zoom feature was nice, other brands were fixed focal length.

Fun lens

Great for special effect scenics and closeup shooting. Some closeups I took of flowers show sharp detail with a nicely defocused background. The zoom on a fisheye is unique and handy. Very sharp across the field except at the extreme edges where it doesn't really matter. There is some purple fringing on backlit branches and similar subjects, but it's easy to fix in processing.

fun lens

I'm very glad i purchased this lens. I was debating between the nikkor 10.5 or this. I like the fact that i can zoom out to 17mm and lessen the amount of "curvature" i get if i need. It's less cash than the nikon as well. You can always correct the barrel distortion with photoshop/Capture nx if you want straight lines. I use this on a Nikon D300 and paired with the nikkor 18-200VR im pretty much covered. It is built akin to a nikkor 50 1.4D but a little heavier. I use this for sports and weddings. If you want a fisheye, seriously consider the tokina and save yourself some cash rather than the nikkor.

outstanding landscapes

Very sharp images and excellent image quality---IF you have software to knock down the pronounced chromatic aberration (I shoot RAW and edit with Canon Digital Photo Professional). For landscapes, the zoom feature is unique and outstanding. My most used lens for Alaska landscapes and very close up effects. A great lens if you appreciate fisheye and wide angle lens capabilities.

Just what I needed

I wanted a fisheye for my trip to France, esp for landscape shots while in the French Alps. This lens worked out great! I was surprised at how heavy duty the casing was when I first got it, which made me feel more comfortable lugging it around with me. It would have been nice to have a rear filter placement, but the zoom capability was really good to have! Did get some great pictures with it.

Great lens at a great price

I've only had this lens a short time, but so far it's been a lot of fun. It seems durable, but I haven't put it to through a lot of rigorous use yet.

Great Fishey Lens!

Recently used it on a sailboat cruise, and it was great! It gets everything in and greatly expands tight spaces. I plan on using it for additional effects at weddings. I used a fisheye on film cameras before, but when I moved to a crop frame digital camera, it cut off the really wide & wild effect. It's very nice to have it back again.

Fun lense! great for bmx, skateboarding.

this is a great lens, very fun to work with. But it has limited use.. not everything looks good with the fisheye look (Great if you want to take skate, bmx photos) Also it's a great lens to have instead of the Canon 15mm fisheye since most camera bodys have a 1.6 crop, meaning the 15mm wouldn't look like much of a fisheye on a cropped sensor. And this lens will work on a cropped sensor, and a full frame (you'd just set the zoom at 15mm) All in all, great fun lens.

Amazing little lens!

I'm using this on a Nikon D200. Between this lens and the 18-200 VR I can accomplish 99% of what I want to for "walk-around" photography. Keep in mind that it is a fisheye so you get typical image distortion, however the sharpness was a pleasant surprise! The zoom capability is also a very nice feature for a fisheye. The lens construction is very good (typical Tokina Pro). I highly recommend this lens if you're looking for a fisheye or maybe even a super-wide.

Tokina AT-X 107 AF DX 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 Fish-eye lens exclusively for Digital SLR cameras with APS-C sensors.

The new Tokina AT-X 107 DX is a full-frame fish-eye lens that gives the photographer a 180 Degree & 100 Degree ; field of view with dramatic curvature of field or "fish-eye" effect. With this lens an entire view or vista can be captured, wider than the human eye can see. The AT-X 107 opens an entirely new dimension of photography.

The front element of the AT-X 107 DX has a newly formulated WP or "Water Proof" optical coating on the glass. This new coating makesmarks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating.

The rear optical group of the lens contains 1 SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact, light-weight and faster focusing.
