Big case - big value!

I have a ten year old version of this case that is still in excellent shape despite extensive student use. I recently purchased an additional case for a second monolight kit. The case is perfect, plenty of room, well padded and dividers are very flexible, which allows us to customize the case to our needs. the wheels are sturdy and invaluable for moving such a large case. The case has strong straps and zippers.

Wow, What a Bag!

I recently purchased the Tamrac 662 Super Rolling Studio bag/case. I wanted a bag/case large enough that I could store my complete lighting kit in one case. Typically, I have to load and transport several smaller cases, and when I get to the job site I have to shuttle all of these smaller cases back and forth. Not exactly the ideal situation and makes for a long and exhausting process. So the Tamrac 662 I hoped would be large enough that I could store my entire lighting kit in just this one bag, which would cut down on some of the back and forth trips at the job site. When I ordered this case I was a bit apprehensive as even though the measurements were given in the cases description, it can be difficult to visualize how large or small it really is. When I received the case, I was surprised at how large this case really is. My first impressions of this case after receiving it was pure delight! I knew that Tamrac produced great camera bags and are known for their quality and for using top quality materials, but I have never seen a case this large manufactured to those same standards. I was concerned that it was going to be just another one of those large soft-sided cases that leave your equipment exposed to damage around the side of the case. Boy, was I worong in thinking this would be another one of those cases. The Tamrac 662 is a semi-rigid case that supplies plenty of padded protection for your equipment around the entire perimeter of the case, in addition to the internal padded dividers. Upon closer inspection, I found that the entire inside of the Tamrac 662 is laced with velcro so the dividers can be repositioned for a custom tailored fit for all of your equipment. The build quality of this case is superior! The same care that is used in the manufacturing of all of Tamrac's camera bags has been carried over to this case. Not only is there a lot of room inside this case, but I was very impressed at how much room the domed pocket on the outside of the case's lid provides. In addition to the outside domed pocket, there are two pockets on the inside of the case's lid that are semi-transparent and made of very thick mil vinal. The two skate wheels are of very good quality and are very quiet when rolling across the ground. Over all, I am very impressed! The quality of this case far exceeds any other large sized cases I have seen. I was able to get four Bowens pro-series mono-lights, two Bowens large travelpak batties, and three Manfrotto stackable light stands in this case. In the outside domed pocket, I was able to get all of the power and sync cables, with a little extra room still left. The inside pockets are doing a great job at holding all of my PocketWizards and jells. So now when I have to shoot out the door to a job, I only have to grab this case and my camera bag. No more four, five, or six bags! So, I know what you're thinking; If this case is so great why did I only give it four stars. I did this for two reasons. As much as I love this bag, it took me quite a while to justify spending that kind of money on an equipment bag. It is on the high side where pricing is concerned; On the other hand, the quality of this case and the amount of walking and moving of bags/cases that this bag will save me, it wasn't hard to justify. The second reason I marked my rating down was, this case is so large that the inclination is to "fill this thing up" with equipment. That would be a mistake. The case itself is rather heavy weighing in at 24.5 lbs. Add to that all of the equipment I mentioned above and this case becomes very heavy! But I must admit, this is both a positive and a negative. The fact that you can load so much equipment in it cuts down on the number of bags/cases you have to transport and keep up with, but when loading, unloading and moving this case, it feels like you're hauling a small house behind you. All said and considered, this is one awesome case! It's large, robust, can haul loads of equipment. Although I had to justify spending this kind of money on this case, all things considered, I can say that I think it was worth it. Because of the build quality, I believe it is going to serve me well over the long term.
