Don't know what the more expensive units could do better! This unit is great for capturing old videotapes.

Being a teacher, I've collected numerous videos that I constantly use in the classroom. But with the constant evolution of display devices, and with these titles not being made available in DVD, I've found that I use many of them less at less. So how can I still utlize videos that have had success in the classroom. That is the background. Canopus ADVC 300 turned out to be a superb solution to my problem. So far, I've only used the hardware linked to my Macbook. Linking VHS tape decks, laser disk players, and my older VHS camcorder, I've been able to convert numerous tapes to a digital format and sucessfully play them to my students. Canopus' analog to digital conversion has well met my needs. The video quality has been very good. In fact, an old student presentation taped on my older camcorder lost video quality when I directly connected it to my computer or a newer camcorder. Yet the Canopus was able to restore the video quality. Canopus had not failed in keeping the audio and video tracks matched, somthing that my research informed me failed with many such devices. Canopus has also been able to work well in making clips automatically based upon blank frames. This feature has worked about 95% of the time. I feel that my purchase has paid for itself. Now I'm looking at breaking some of my older videos up, adding questions into the video stream instead of having a separate handout.
