Shopper : I have a Macbook Pro 13" with 512 GB SSD drive. If I purchase this Lacie 1 TB Thunderbolt external drive for use as a back up, will the transfer rate still be at the speed it claims if the Lacie drive only spins at 5400 RPM?MICHAEL A M : I love my rugged drive and find it adequately fast for all I do which with it with is professional photography. If you want the most speed you may wish to consider the 1TB Little Big Disk not only for the speed but also for it's multiport feature and ability to daisy chain. The rugged has but the single port so if you need to drive external video or access data on another drive you'd be out of luck.STEVEN J : I haven't run a speed test on it, but transfers are very fast. I use it for backup with my Macbook Pro retina, and after the first backup which took a while, it only takes a minute or two to back it up. I also use it to store photos and they transfer quickly, too. The rugged case is great if you're lugging it around. A good buy.DAVID K : Average transfer rate (110MB/s) takes into account the drive speed, and is less than Interface transfer rate. Realistically, this just means that the interface isn't going to be the speed limiter.MATTHEW M : While I can't give you an official answer, I do know that transfer rate is different from read/write speed. So while the transfer using thunderbolt is super fast, you'll be slightly limited by the disks ability to write. Overall though I'd say it's a great device to use for backup and behavior you're seeking.
Shopper : how big is this hd?ROBERT G : The drive measures 5.5" x 3.5" x 1" including the orange bumper.STEVEN J : 5.5" x 3.5" x 1" Excellent product. Fast and easy to use.MICHAEL A M : 1 TB and very compact. 5 or so inches long. Excellent drive. Fast and Tuff looking

Read and write speed are great. Looks like it will hold up if I need to transport files I am working on.

Go to drive.

I use this drive on location for capturing and editing photos. It provides additional storage space in a low profile unit and keeps my laptop from getting filled up during a photo shoot. I had an earlier version of this drive in the past and broke the internal USB3 connection. Had that drive replaced and now use it only as a TimeMachine back up. The Thunderbolt connection feels much more secure and offers a much faster response from the drive. I still take care to unplug the cable before packing the drive away. The 1TB is a little fatter and heavier than the 500MB. So far, I am very happy with this little unit. I have learned to never trust important files to only one drive....
