It does have to be charged by an adapter but battery life is good. It should work well for videos. A mini soft box is a small portable soft boa which fits on camera speed light .SEBASTIAN P : A mini soft box is a small box that softens the output light on a flash head or light. Sadly, this specific light wasnt designed to fit one. Also, the strenght of this light (the output) is not enough to be sucessfully softened with a softbox. A softbox have a lot of light loss, and you need a much powerfull source to have some desent results. This just doesnt have the power.DAWN T : A mini softbox is a type of light diffuser that covers a bright light source. It's a light minimizer to soften overly bright lights and minimize shadows. Google it for examples with photos.
Shopper : Does this hook up to a tripod or the camera? Do I need a remote to use or is it just constant "filler" light?JOE G : It's on all the time, like a flashlight. Fits on a hot-shoe. Has a 1/4-20 thread on the bottom for whatever you want to screw it onto.DAWN T : The Sima light is a constant filler light. It can be used 4 ways:
1) handheld (useful on detail shots of jewelry or wedding details for wedding photographers). Or placed on the ground as a backlight behind a couple or object.
2) attached to hotshoe on the camera
3) attached to the extension arm bar that comes with Sima light purchase. The extension bar has a shoe mount for Sima light and connects to the screw hole on the base of the camera. Keeps light off camera for better shadow control.
4) you could connect on a tripod, if your tripod has a shoe mount. But in my opinion it's too small to be useful on a tripod as a major light source. You'd want this light close to the subject. You'd miss out on photo ops that would require the Sima light to tilt to the subject too.SEBASTIAN P : Being a shoe mount its naturally made to hook up to a camera.
There are different ways to place it on tripods or light stands. The unit have on the shoe mount area a female screw so you can use it on any tripod directly, also on stands, but in that case is recommended to have some kind of adjustable support so you can aim it as you please.
Don't need a remote since this is not a flash, is a stand alone video light (clearly constant). Just turn it on when you need it.
Note: It's not tended to be used off camera. That kind of lighting have considerably more power than this one.ACCOUNTS P : It can connect to either. It has a shoe that will slide into the shoe mount on the video camera. It also has a bracket that allows you to mount it to a tripod. You can use the tripod mount and still mount your camera. You can also clip multiple lights together. If you look closely at the photo, you can see that it has shoe mounts on three sides. I own 6 of these and have used all six clipped together before. Very handy in a pinch. It only has an on or off switch, so there is no way to use it with a remote or as a strobe. It's just constant light, perfect for video. I first learned of this light from a local television news photojournalist who used these exclusively in the field. The fact that it is rechargeable is huge. I'm not sure how long it lasts on a charge, but last week I had one on continuously for 35 minutes with no problem.DANIEL S : It attaches directly to the camera. Exactly what I needed
This is exactly what I needed to get the job done. I bought several of them and I can arrange build them out to whatever size I want. Good stuff!

Small and useful, though not dimmable
Bought two of these to use as creative lighting for still photography. These are really small and handy and you can throw them in your bag and just keep them there until you need to add a hairlight to someone or paint in a long exposure. They are uber-bright for how small they are, and can be a little blinding. They also don't have a dimmer switch, which brought my rating down a star. It's nice that they are rechargeable and don't need separate batteries to carry around. I don't do video so I can't speak to their usefulness for that, but I love how you can attach them together to make them easy to handhold in lieu of off-camera flash.

Super handy for photography detail shots
These are so small and easy to carry on location. I use them in still photography as fill light for detail shots, or backlight behind people in night shots. They are super bright so they can be blinding on client/model eyes, use caution.

Nice!
It's a great light. The only reason I gave it four stars is that there is no way you could use this and shoot directly at a person without a soft box or a filter of some sort. It produces really nice (a bit cool, but nice) light and for the price and convenience, it's just unbeatable. I ordered a mini softbox with it because of another reviewers comments and it works perfectly. using this during a semi-dark evening event is going to be just the right amount of light with the soft box. But please, don't point it at anyone directly. An added benefit is that it produces no heat. You can charge it and hold it in your hand. An assistant could hold this over a subject as you're filming and it would be awesome and take up no space.
