Questions & Answers

Carolyn D : Thank you for this feature...my question : is this ball head compatible with the Alta Pro 284CT tripod, which I have just recently purchased? I just want to make sure I get the best combo. I love the pistol grip, but it doesn't have a large enough load capacity, & I want to make sure I get one that will hold firmly in vertial position. Thank you for your help. Carolyn DaltonANDREW R : Yes, this head should fit the Alta Pro 284CT
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?BYRON R : Good quality ball head, smooth, good controls and cheap since Vanguard has a newer line out.

Great tripod head - not very "quick"

Love this head. But it's definitely far from being a "quick release". Positioning the camera plate into the holder takes some focus, then the tightening knob needs to be turned to tighten it up. My previous head had an open/shut lever, which was truly "quick release". But for the way I shoot, this head works fine. Very sturdy and doesn't creep with a larger lens.

Decent Arca compatible head

Decent light weight head, The clamp just barely open wide enough for plates to drop in from the top. I use this on a light weight travel Tripod.

Decent head, very stable and smooth

Just slightly undersized clamp makes attaching other Arca plates not as quick as I had hoped. Ball is smooth and panning is nicely dampened

Nice quality head

This ball head was purchased to go on a light weight carbon fiber travel tripod. I had purchased the bigger 230L version but was not happy with the lever lock and replaced the QR lock with a Wimberly and was very pleased. so I went with the knob style lock this time. This head is rock solid, it has a claimed maximum load rating of 44 pounds yet is very small and light. When locked in place I can not move the head with my hand at all so I imagine it could hold about anything I can throw at it. The panning is a little stiff but I would imagine it will loosen with use. All the other controls are smooth and positive. It holds my D7000 with MB-D11 and Tamron 70-300 VC without effort. The semi elliptical ball makes things smooth as can be. Since these are no longer made I would say get it while you can

About Vanguard ABH-120K

Vanguard's top-of-the-line ABH-120K semi-elliptical ball head automatically adjusts and increase tension to handle off-center load, with exceptional strength and stability. Patented features include Combination-Friction Forces Control (CFFC) which enables extreme tension and friction control via an ergonomic grooved dial located on the main adjustment knob. Both are independently adjustable but positioned side-by-side on the same axis for convenient fine-tuning. This combination of precise tension and friction forces control increases the strength to provide outstanding security.

ABH-120K has exceptional stability with its Stability X3 system's additional component between the semi-elliptical ball head and housing, providing a loading weight capacity of three times that of other ball head. Other features include an industry-leading housing with oxidation anodizing treatment that provides a smooth, scratch-free surface. It prevents scratching and damaging with incredible resistance. Its quick-release plate has cavity-mounted anti-slip rubber pads for greater camera-to-surface security. A scaled base enables smooth 360-degree panoramic movement. It is compatible with numerous Arca quick release plates so its platform requires no adaptor. K-type knob lock enables fine-tuning.
