Shopper : What is its depth, in inches? It is small however so, depending what you need it for you should know that it's not very big. It is not battery operated. Not in black; it is not a designer accessory.PATRICK V : Dear Tia Maria: The Porta-Trace light box that (I purchased last year did not come in black, as it has a stainless steel frame. It is also strictly a/c operated. However, in my opinion, it is one of the best light boxes you could ever own. I tried on of the ones that ran both battery and a/c years ago, and it was nothing like the quality of workmanship, or the illumination of the Porta Trace. I have been using their product for over twenty years now, and have been very satisfied. As far as portability goes, it will fit in a reasonably sized messenger bag. If you check Adorama's bag department, you should probably be able to find inner dimensions of their web page. . PatrickJEFF D : Doesn't come in black as far as I know. It's not battery operated but small enough to take with you if you needed.KIMBERLY J : No I do not think it comes in black. And no it is not battery operated. And it not that portable. You can find thinner battery operated ones but they are more expensive and are not as bright.Baris S : It is pretty lightweight, but I wouldn't call it easily portable. It is not battery operated, it has a ~4-5 feet 120V power cable.

Great bargain!

Very nice product for the money. Stainless steel chassis means it should last a long time. Two bulbs provide more even light thatn single bulb units and color rendition is very good. Would have given it 5 stars if it had a ledge to prevent transparencies from sliding off the viewing surface when it is slanted.

Nice item

I am using this as a light source for slide viewing and for slide copying. I am converting old slides to digital. The box is my sorting/viewing aid. I then use the diffuse light as a source to copy them using a Canon 100mm macro lens(with a slide holder I made). Good color rendition simply using AWB. This items does triple duty for me.

Great product at a great price!

I am very pleased with the quality of this product. It is built well and has great lighting. I use it to trace designs for use in ceramics, and it is perfect. I was able to trace a photo of mine that was printed on heavy weight photo paper (onto everyday printer paper) with no problems at all. I would definitely recommend this product to others.

Works good, needs a little improvement

It works good, but needs small improvements. I replaced the 4 screws that hold the white plastic,with stainless steel ones ( they won't corrode and look good with the case. I put small lengths of silicone rubber tubing on the tilt wire, where the wire touches the table to keep it from scatching the table and it won't slide off. I glued a 1/4" thick strip of plexiglass to the bottom of the white plastic to keep the slides from falling off the plastic when the unit is tilted.

I originally purchased it to register front and back artwork that I use for photoresist metal etching. Also great for sorting slides.

A great value...

If you're looking for a small, portable and rugged transparency viewer, this is it. Tuck it under your arm, or put it into a computer bag to take it with you. The light is very even, eliminating the need to reposition slides when viewing them. There are two viewing positions (slightly angled and flat). I appreciate the flat position when sorting stacks of slides; the stacks don't topple over.
