As neither Nikon nor anyone else makes a 2x extender for the DX line of cameras, this is a good, inexpensive substitute. I've used this on the 18-55 mm zoom lens that comes with my D5100. Expect some vignetting at the lower end of a zoom-lens' range, but that disappears around 25mm. The images seem sharp without noticeable pin-cushioning. It makes a good substitute for a 2x extender.
