Okay flash, sometines zoom head would run constently when powered on,would have to tap it to stop. Sleep mode works if you have it on camera. I got two for flash set up slaves sensor is not the best tbey have to br close 15 ft and sensor needs to be pointed at msin flash. Dont get these if you want to use on radio triggers. I did and the power saving mode is a pain and cant be turned off.if they sit idle for 90 seconds they shut down and you will have to walk over and reset them. Slave mode turns off hot shoe so radio triggers wont work and thre is no pc terminal. I returned them becajse of that. Of you just wont to use on camera or with TTL cord they will work good gor that ONCE AGAIN DONT GET TO USE WITH RADIO TRIGGERS OF ANY KIND!!!! Close flash on slave mode for portraits or macro perfect for that.

I purchased this as a way to learn how to utilize hotshoe flash. I've been pleased with the results. I've since purchased a Nikon flash but still apprciate the ability to use the Vivitar flash in conjuction with the Nikon.

I use this for table top art pic's for this purpose nothing I have found compares in this price range...one downfall..limited on power levels!!!!....don't think it will take a lot of knocking around.....but hey it's [$] and does it well. Better than I expected for what I spent!!

Used a Vivitar 283 for weddings / portraits and other events for over 20 years . Built like a tank and still worked perfectly when I parted with it... this 383 doesn't come close in build quality but I wanted higher output than the sb700 and needed the wireless slave function and this seems to deliver on both. Sometimes cheap hurts , may eventually spring for the sb900 . This 383 is used on and off of a d7000 ,and when mounted will trigger top lcd backlighting even though turned off in cameras custom setting. Overall I would have given a 2.5 rating ...if it is still working in a year.

So far I am very happy with this flash. It performs as required and takes the bumbs and rough handling I give it. Plenty of light for small studio and macro work. Fires consistently with my Nikon.

A reasonable addition as a slave off camera or as a stand alone on camera flash.

It perform just as good as the Sunpak 555 without the weight.I like the power and performance of the Vivitar DF 387. It work good with Nikon D100.

I have been using Vivitar 283 & 285's since about 1974 or so. I have mounted them on light stands, fired them with slaves, radio syncs and even a neat little Vivitar combo slave/hot shoe you could mount anywhere. They were tough, well designed, durable, versatile units built by Matsushita (Panasonic) you could depend on. I still have 4 of them and use them regularly so I decided to get into the 90's and take advantage of my D300's iTTL metering. And the new Vivitar 383 seemed the least expensive way to get there. The best thing I can say about the 383 is that it works as planned. But I believe the only thing it has in common with the 70's and 80's flashes is the name. The new flash is very flimsy compared to the old 283/383 and I doubt Matsushita had any input. The unit seems to be a light weight copy of a Nikon SB600 which is a good thing but we'll just have to see how long the 383 holds up, especially its flimsy looking plastic foot. I'll be making use of the built in slave soon as a third light on a exec portrait set up. Adorama is a great store and a great online shopping experience. I'll probably be back for an SB600 this summer.

When I found that Vivitar made a flash that worked on my digital Nikon I knew it was the one for me. I have been using Vivitar flashes for over 30 years both professionally and personally. My 1st was an original 283. This new Vivitar is so easy to use compared to my Nikon flash for my Nikon film camera. Which, by the way, does not work on my Nikon digital except in manual mode.

This unit was purchased as an "add on" to two Nikon SB-800s. It's a terrific slave when using CLS system at a very reasonable price.

Makes a good backup flash or a second fill flash for those who can't afford two SB-900's. Recycle rate is not too bad for a flash in this price range. Also, be aware that this is quite a large flash unit that is almost as big as the Nikon SB-900.
