The optics, tube and finish of the ED81S are fantastic. The images it produces easily outclass a previous TV-76 that I owned, and the star test backs up the in-focus performance - excellent! The finish is fine, smooth and glossy, I find myself setting it up just to look at it. The focuser, however, is only average. No "buttery/silky" smooth operation - just a mechanical rack-"on"-pinion feel. The fine focus knob does work well, though, and it's perfectly serviceable. I swapped it out for a Moonlite and now have the perfect grab-and-go (for me).

The price of the Vixens are a little high, but the quality is also high. These scopes are light weight compared to others of the same aperture/quality. Images are very sharp and free of false color.

This is a good scope that would give you nice views of the sky. However I have to give it a 2 stars only as it is way over priced compared to its competitors. Also the service provided by the local importer is not phenomenal. Vixen is a good brand but not well supported in the US.

When The ED81S Refractor was introduced, it set a new standard for APO Refractors. The combination of better color correction from the new ED glass and brighter images from its fast f/7.7 focal ratio will satisfy the most demanding visual astronomer or astro-photographer. The new ED glass produces clear and high contrast viewing, virtually free of false color. Vixen's innovative design uses newly developed, environmentally friendly glass technology. The optical tube is very stable yet light weight. Vixen's new Dual Speed Focus, now standard on the ED81 Refractor, provides fine focus adjustments for 1/7th speed focusing.
