Functional but Slow by Comparison

I purchased this drive to use as storage for images which are used and processed in Lightroom and Photoshop CC. I had read the reviews which were above average. But I have owned this drive for about a month now, and I have found it to be just OK. Yes, it's quiet and hopefully reliable. It was inexpensive too. On Sale I think I paid about $85, which is a great price per GB. But by comparison to my other external USB 3.0 drive (LaCie 9220) it is 50% slower according to the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test. Barely cracking 35mb per second, the WD drive has now been relagated to my Time Machine back up drive, and the LaCie has earned the spot as my external image storage device. For instances where speed is NOT of the essence, this is a good performing, solid drive. If you have a need for speed, this is not the drive for you.

The WD My Passport 2TB Ultra Portable External Hard Drive (Red) is a bus powered, durable, portable hard drive. This USB 3.0 compatible drive connects directly to your USB port allowing you to transfer data at speeds up to 5 GB/s simplifying the once arduous task of transferring large files such as HD video, movies, pictures, photos, music and more. Backing up your data has also been simplified, as you have the option to backup data to both the drive and the cloud via Dropbox.

Once configured, you can manage nearly every aspect of your drive by utilizing the included Drive Utilities. You can also secure your drive by taking advantage of WD Security enabling you to password protect and encrypt your drive.
