Questions & Answers

JEFFREY C : Am I correct in noting this package does NOT come with a diffuser, etc that would attach to the Velcro inner edges?GEORGE H : The package does come with a diffuser panel that goes in the "front" of the unit. It's quite a versatile unit as shipped.MICHAEL H : It should comes with diffuser, attached to the edge with veclroDON L : Mine came with a diffuser that attaches to the Velcro® inner edges. A fear years later, it still attaches like a charm and does great job of diffusing the light from both Nikon SB-800 and LumoPro 180 flashes.ANN E : White diffuser included.JONATHAN D : It's been almost 5 yrs. since I purchased this so my memory may be a bit hazy. But as I recall, it did NOT come with an additional diffuser panel, other than the one permanently attached to the face. I believe the Velcro around the face recess is for attaching an optional grid (egg crate) for more directional control of the light. Hope this helps.MICHAEL C : It DOES come with a velcro, rip-away style diffuser. For some strange reason it's now shown in the pictures, but it does come with it. I've bought two of these.
Shopper : What's the work around if using a remote trigger that connects to the shoe of the flash?MATTHEW M : Not an issue. Remote trigger should have same clip on bottom as flash, which will slide onto stand, where there is a knob to turn to tighten.ALFRED P : If it's an optical trigger like Canon's or Nikon's built in systems (not counting the new Canon 600) there isn't much you can do off the top of my head since it's line of sight. However, if you are using wireless radio triggers then there is no issue because they use radio fequencies and are not line of sight. There are many inexpensive radio triggers on the market if you are okay with manual.. If you want to use TTL then I think the most bang for the buck is the Phottix Odin system. I hope this answers your question. Take careKEITH C : I use Pocket Wizard Flex with these. There are no issues at all with them.RICK C : I do not recommend this soft box. The metal rods and umbrella shaft are weak and do not hold up to normal use. My use was limited to inside, but the shaft broke after a few uses. Also, trying to position the flash inside the box through the bottom zippered opening is very cumbersome. I recommend a soft box with an opening in the rear and the speed light and stand is completely outside the box. The only part of the speed light that enters the box is the front half.THOMAS J : The head of the flash is the only thing that goes inside the soft box. I have no trouble using the pocket wizard units with my SB-900's and the soft box. Hope this helps!CATALIN R : How long your triggering devicevhas a hot shoe mount option you have no problems . I use TT5 and works like a charm also I use speedlights with the hotshoe to PW connectors and worked . The Soft Box has more than enough play in the adjustments to accomodate any triggering device you might have under your flashANN E : I'm not certain I'm fully understanding the problem or the question. What are you trying to work around? I use a pocket wizard attached to the flash inside the Apollo kit and I trigger that flash with a pocket wizard mini connected to the hotshoe of my camera. I've not had any problems with this set up.
ROBERT T : Would this work with the 600ex-rt's? Do I need any other adapter pieces?VANESSA H : I love this soft box, I do not have any "adapters" very much so worth the money.JASON L : It uses a standard hot shoe so your 600 should be fine.ORLANDO T : I have used it with the 580 EX II, but it should work, it comes with a shoot mount the works like the hot shoe on the camera. You could also buy a shoe mount that accommodates more than one flash. I hope it helps.

Amazing support by FJWestcott

Perfect for studio or run 'n gun field work. Love the ease of use, quick setup, quality of light, and versatility. I use these with everything from speedlights, mono's, and spiderlites. The newer (fiberglass) versions are even more dynamic with the ability to add a grid and are also more durable. On top of being a quality product, FJWestcott blew my expectations away when I sent my old Apollo's in for modification (retrofit) to work with their 40 degree grids. All I can say is, what an amazing customer experience. I've got several of their products (umbrellas, backdrops, and more than a few apollo products), and now they've got a loyal FJWestcott customer for life. I feel obligated to share with others not because of the personal service treatment, but to reassure anyone considering their products that they firmly stand behind their offerings and provide unbelievable service/support. Save yourself the time and hassle and just go FJWestcott. Kudos to their team for the exceptional customer treatment.

Great buy

Easy to put up just like an umbrella. Used it with a ab1600 studio light and it worked perfect. As with any umbrella make sure you weigh down your stand. Mine fell over 5 minutes into the shoot. Woops. Wish the top portion of the diffuser was permanently attached but that's just me. All in all I love it.

Great kit!

I graduated to this after I first bought a 16" softbox which was smaller than what I needed. This size works really well for my basement studio. The double panels are good and the setup is easy.

Big, soft lighting at a modest price

Easy, quick set up with an umbrella frame on any standard umbrella stand. Great even lighting from the reflective interior. The flash is behind the front diffuser panel so access can be inconvenient so best when used with remote radio triggers. The design does not allow much tilt option on a standard light stand but you can have the light stand shaft enter from under the diffuser panel. Looks a little odd but still works fine. Hey, photographers have to improvise at times. Not the best softbox in breezy outdoor settings but all around a very good value.

Manufacturing defects; poor customer ser

I have a Wescott umbrella kit, which I liked. I purchased this softbox kit and found the tilt bracket had design or manufacturing defects which prevented it from holding the softbox and flash. I re-machined the part to make it fit and notified Wescott of the problem. Initially they offered a replacement part but I told them the part, remachined, now worked. I had hoped for a small 'apology' gift but they insisted I'd have to send that part back (rendering the kit unusable) in order to get a new part and accused me of not putting it on the lightstand correctly (!!!!!) Very dissatisfied with a 100 yr old company's service. Try Protoflex XS Octodome- same price

Excellent Product.

This soft box works exactly as it's supposed to. Nice soft colour, too. I'm using this with an SB900 and diffuser. Beautiful light. Nice fall off. Flexible light....if you want harder light, remove the diffuser. Only drawback as some others have said is the tilt. BUT if you are taking portraits of people this has no relevance. Plenty of angle for that. Stand is very good, too. To improve the package, they should add a boom arm. This would take care of the tilt as well. Very happy customer. Worth the shipping to Australia.

Good buy for the price

The soft box is good for indoor uses, low light conditions or where space is limited. Several F-stops from your speedlight will be lost, limiting the output of this light source, especially outside.

Good light box

Great product but must have weight/sand bag/or helper to hold even in slight breeze if using outside

Sweet Kit, Especially for the $

If you're on the fence, or just getting into light modifiers and are looking for an entry level product that will take you into being pro, get this package! The stands are durable enough for their size (be sure to use sandbags when possible, especially outdoors). Works well with speedlights, lots of light output, very easy to control. The speedlight attachment is on the higher end of durability and ease of use, so I like using them. The softbox sets up easily and can pack into most studio strobe bags.

Gear I cant live without

I use this as part of my stteet photograpghy, and I love it. It has a fast setuo and take fown and I use it eith my Sb-600 and sb-24. An improvement would be a horrizantal flash adaptor that would alow the flas init to fire more center on the softbox.

Great starter kit...for the money

For [$] you end up with a highly portable and efficient piece of equipment. the only real negative mark i can comment on is the light stand is a bit, well...light. it is light weight and a little flimsy. i wouldnt put much more weight on the stand than what it is designed for (the softbox and speedlite).I do not have wireless e-ttl so changing the settings on the flash is a bit of a hassle because you have to pull back the diffusor screen each time (unless you use a long ettl connecting cord). these are the only two reasons i didnt give it 5 stars.Other than these two issues i wouldnt have a problem recommending the equipment. if it really bothered you, you could purchase a seperate light stand in the future, though this would contradict the savings you get when buying the package deal.Oh well. all in all a solid performing product.

Perfect Softbox for Speedlight

I use this softbox with a nikon speedlight (SB900 or SB600) for portraits. I was immediately impressed at how easy it was to set up. The sofbox is built on an umbrella frame and set up is almost as easy as that. Once open, you simply need to attach it to the stand via the umbrella hole and then close the front panel with the attached velcro. I had the stand and softbox set up in literally 2 or 3 minutes. Access to your flash is as easy as opening the front panel. Even better then the easy set up is how good the pictures look. This 28 inch softbox is large and place a beautiful key light in the subjects eyes. the light is soft and consistant. The photos attached here were made with a three light set up. The softbox is camera left just outside the frame (the closer, the softer the light). A second light was set up camera right using a speedlight and umbella at half power, and the last light was camera right and behind the subject. I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 35 mm f/1.8 set at f/4. Only processing was white balance and cropping.
