About Westcott X-Drop Kit 5x7'

The Westcott 5 x 7' black X-Drop Background System is a lightweight package that is perfect for travel. At a little over 5 lbs, this kit can be used for headshots, product photography, weddings or general commercial photography in the studio or on location. The 100% cotton fabric comes with grommet holes on the top and bottom for easy hanging and that also eliminates the need to establish a top or bottom orientation. When it gets dirty, it's readily machine washable in cold water and tumble dried on "low."

The background support system is characterized by quick setup and tear down capability. It's lightweight and contains telescopic legs and arms that will hold the fabric taut. The expandable carrying case is capable of holding the X-Drop System as well as up to three backdrops.

Out of box goodness

from Houston  -  Photo Enthusiast

I scrambled for an emergency backdrop kit as I needed to take some pictures for a web page profile. Settled on the black kit and it worked out great! Using 3 lights with dimmers and this kit, in moments I had a basic mini-studio. The kit is rather "deep" when deployed, but that's the price for stability. The aluminum frame is made for indoor use, I can't ever see it stand up to any kind of a wind. The only gripe I have is about the case - it's too small to carry the backdrop and the frame and waaaay to large for just the frame itself. I abandoned the cloth case for the backdrop and purchased Sunpak Medium Tripod Case from Adorama which fits the rolled up material like a glove. Overall it was a win - I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to have a basic kit for some portrait shots.

great buy

Great Backdrop For The Price

from Eastampton, NJ  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I'm really excited about this backdrop. I use it as a backdrop for portraits and works well. This backdrop is not for group shots, unless your talking about a small group of 3 people and even that is a maybe (depending on the size of your subjects). The backdrop can be setup and taken down rather quickly is lightweight and can be easily transported.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Can you get the basic kit (1 back drop) with any color you choose?
PHILIP M  The one I have had the basic black. If I remember correctly, there are other ones that you need to buy separately. I thought this package was a good deal though.
Shopper  Based on what I read this product does not seem to be suitable for full-body shots. If I through over a fairly large backdrop that would cover the entire structure and have a train, would it be suitable for a full body shot then? Thanks.
BEN E  You can do full body shots, but it depends on what you want the background to do. The bottom of it will not touch the floor, so if you have a bed sheet or paper you can have your subject stand on, then you can use a program like Photoshop to edit the gap between the bottom of the X-Drop and the floor. Also, you can have your subject seated and have their feet on the cross bar of the chair or have them raise their legs a little so you don't get the floor in your shot. This system is light weight, simple to set up and break down and is perfect for seated portrait work and you can take it almost anywhere. It is great as long as you don't need standing head to toe shots with common angles. If you have a worm's eye angle, you might be able to get everything in the shot. You also might think you can put a long sheet on it and have that cover the floor. I guess you can, but you also want to use a sand bag to keep the X-Drop in place. I have not tried this yet. A thin sheet might work, but anything with more weight may damage the X-Drop so be careful. I like my X-Drop and have Black + White backdrops. I would recommend it for typical studio work and for the mobile photographer...but get a sand bag if you are working in the wind!
DENTON T  Can this be used horizontally as well as vertically?
