Questions & Answers

Shopper : I bought the Westcott boom arm and it must be mounted on a 1 inch tube. The specs says it mounts to a standard 5/8 inch but it cant be secured. This limits the usable height significantly. There are two plastic pieces that appear to be adapters for a 3/4 inch tube but they cant be used with an intermediate section of a light stand. Am i missing a part?KAT G : I slid my light stand all the way through the hole on the black clamp. Then just used the black clamp to close tightly around the light stand that sticks thru the black clamp. Hope this helps.JAMES S : I tried to use the boom on some of the Westcott lightweight stands and ran into a similar issue. I contacted Westcott support (rather nice people BTW) and was informed that they recommend that you use the boom arm on their 10' Heavy Weight stand at a minimum. So no, you are not missing a part it's just that this is not designed for a light weight stand. I purchased the recommend stand and love the combo.GARY J : I looked at the description on the Adorama site and I read it to say that it has a 5/8" stud with 1/4-20" adapter. I take this to mean to attach you light. Not to attach the boom arm to your stand. Mine has the 5/8" stud with 1/4-20" adapter on the very end of the boom arm to attach your monolight. GaryGARY J : I ordered the same boom arm but have not tried to mount it yet. I need to get a stand for it. I do know there were no instructions with my unit. Gary
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?GARY J : Needed a boom arm for a hair light. Use my AB800 on this and it works well.

not thrilled with the clamp

I bought this as a boom for speed lights and modifiers for hair lights and future expansion to studio lights. Thought it would fit onto my current light stands (manfrotto 052B). Was surprised to learn the clamp needs a minimum of a 22mm pole to clamp to. That would have been nice to know before buying. The top section of my manfroto stands are 15mm. I ended up making a DIY adaptor from a 1/2 pipe and a rubber hose slipped over it, so consequently, I never take it off of that stand. I'll need to buy a sturdier stand with thicker tubes. But even with a stand with thicker tubes, adjusting the clamp is awkward with the plastic parks snapping into place with a pop as it's tightened. Not what I expected at all. Improve the clamp and it's a winner. With that clamp, I can't recommend it.

Does the job

in combination with a medium sized lightsource and a small strip-light softbox, this will make a great hairlight, kicker or accent light.
