About Zeiss

The C Sonnar T* 1.5/50 ZM lens is the modern technological reincarnation of the classical Sonnar 1.5/50, the fastest standard lens of its time, for the Contax II rangefinder camera. It is fast, very resistant to flaring and unusually compact - therefore the "C" in the lens name.

With its well controlled distortion, the lens produces a very accurate representation of objects. It can take the same filters which fit the ZM wide angle lenses with 28, 25 and 21mm focal lengths. This is a very versatile lens for photojournalistic work in general and for available light photography in particular.

Zeiss Features

  • Virtually zero geometric distortion for accurate reproduction of object shapes, particularly products and architecture
  • Reduces unintended focus shift with aperture variation for improved accuracy of rangefinder defined focus
  • Precise 10-blade aperture with 1/3 stop interval click stops ensures exact exposure
  • Wear resistant filter mount for long-term reliability in tough conditions
  • Highly advanced flare control that ensures crisp, brilliant images
  • Extremely accurate rangefinder coupling mechanism ensures optical precision, contributing to superior image quality

Nice, but you get what you pay for

This is an outstanding lens for the price, but I encountered some difficulty getting it to perform. There is a focus shift on the lens that made it difficult to use at wide open (f/1.5). The lens I received was calibrated for spot-on rangefinder coupling at f/2.8 (admittedly a mistake on Zeiss' part). I sent mine back to the factory in Germany, where they re-calibrated it (to spot-on at f/1.5, not 2.8) for free after some paperwork. Now, it is very nice, but it doesn't get fully sharp until somewhere between f/2 and f/2.8. Overall, a very nice lens that compares favorably to some of my vintage Leitz lenses.

Excellent build quality & superior optic

I chose this lens for the basic reasons: 1. Low-light capable 2. Extremely sharp wide-open 3. Aperture increments 1/3 stop clicks 4. Zeiss build quality, guarantee, reputation 5. Price was significantly lower than Leica equivalent 6. My previous experiences with Zeiss optics have been perfect! My only negative is the Zeiss hood is relatively expensive...but it fits & works perfectly!!
