Digital Photography One on One

By Mark Wallace

April 30, 2010

AdoramaTV presents Digital Photography One on One with Mark Wallace. In this episode Mark talks about Depth of Field and how aperture, focal length and distance from subject impact your depth of field.

Welcome to the debut of Adorama TV's Digital Photography One on One! In our first episode, Mark focuses (both literally and figuratively) on focus, and how to use different settings to control depth of field so you can throw the background out of focus when shooting portraits, or to bring it into focus when you want to include the surrounding environment.

And now, on with the show!

A different sort of question DOF

I am from the OLD film camera days cannon F! etc. I am used to seeing the DOF on the apature ring. I now own a D5000 and find no reference to focus point nor do I find a DOF indicator. Is there anyway to find this out without trial and error?

Great Info!

Hi Mark, I really enjoy the series you have put together. I have watched just about every video you have on this website just to see what you have shared with everyone. Even if I am knowledgeable about the topic I find myself watching to see if there is something I can improve on. Your easy to understand without making things too technical for new shooters, and I have learned several things as well. Thanks again for this great resource! Kevin Thompson www.vegaskevin.com

Visuals Make All The Difference

Great visuals that demonstrate what you are explaining. It's easy to remember aperture in relation to depth of filed, but I didn't realize focal length and distance from subject were such strong factors too until seeing your photos.

Helpful but a suggestion

This is a great service you provide! A suggestion - it would be easier to understand if we could see the progression of photos side by side for comparison.

More Data...

Spodeworld, on the flickr images there is a link that says, "More properties". It's on the right hand side of the page. If you click it you will get a ton of data that shows all the camera settings, lenses used, the camera body, etc.
