Increased buffer capacity, in-camera RAW processing wider ISO range
By Fred Singer
July 3, 2012
With the release of one of the most significant firmware upgrades of the digital age, Canon EOS 7D owners now have a more advanced DSLR. The free update boosts buffer capacity from 15 to 25 RAW images, an important complement to the camera's 8 fps burst rate. The ISO Auto range has been extended from 100-3200 to 100-6400, and the camera is now compatible with the recently introduced Canon GPS Recceiver GP-E2. Canon EOS 7D Firmware Update 2.0.X is the most significant and wide-ranging update since the 7D was introduced in 2009.Canon EOS 7D owners can now also process RAW images in-camera. In-camera RAW adjustments include: exposure compensation, white balance, picture style, noise reduction, distortion correction and more. Users will also be able to re-size images in-camera. Images can also be given star rankings for easier sorting. All in-camera post-processing can be done in playback mode.New features that are inherited from the Canon EOS 5D Mark III include the ability to manually adjust audio levels prior to recording video up to 64 levels and a new submenu that lets users modify the first four characters of file names.Unlike typical firmware updates, which usually fix bugs or add minor new features, the Canon 7D firmware update is one of the most significant ones we've seen and increases the value of the 7D. It also puts more distance between the 7D and the enthusiast-oriented Canon 60D.Canon EOS 7D Firmware Version 2.0.X will be available in early August. Learn more about the upgrade here.

Is it necessary to download the previous firmware updates to the 7D in order to add Version 2.0.X..I have read that some of the previous updates were problematic and did not download the updated versions. Kudos to Canon for the upgrade. I concur with Eric, an upgrade to five shots in HDR would be huge!

as a 7d user this is a welcome update. however, the function that i have always wanted is an expanded number of shots for hdr. five shots in AEB would have made this perfect for me, but thank you for the added features, it was not expected.
