The in-room safe at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is huge!
By Jack Howard
September 1, 2009
Over the years as a photographer, I've stayed at all sorts of hotels, from small tropical boutique hotel huts, to massive Vegas high-rises, Portuguese business hotels, and far too many airport overnighters but in all my travels I've never seen an in-room safe capable of gobbling more gear that that of the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Sure, some newer business hotel safes now have internal power supplies for securely juicing a laptop, and sure, even your rudimentary four-number basic hotel safe can stow a couple of pro bodies, a handful of pro lenses up to 70-200 f/2.8 size, iPods, passports and jewelry, but my jaw dropped when I first gazed upon this monster safe on the Garden Island.
For size reference purposes, that's a Think Tank Airport International bag (14" W x 8" D x 21" H) to the left of the safe and a Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 atop the safe. Inside , that's a Gitzo Traveller tripod and a Pentax K-7, along with lots of other gear. I'm telling you, this safe is huge! How huge you say? It could very easily swallow a Canon 400mm f/2.8L and still have room for more gear! Had I known this safe was so huge, I may have been tempted to bring along a lot more gear that I'd probably not end up using at all during my stay! All in all, this was far and away the best hotel room safe for photographers I've ever seen. If you've seen a bigger or better in-room safe, let us know!
