A woodsman friend

I keep seeing bad reviews on this and i find it hard to believe. I have owned mine for years and have literally beat the crap out of it. I've used it for things not intended like chopping fence. Yes it left a nick in the blade but has tackled small trees, brush, and thorn thickets. It stays on my ATV and it has cleared miles of hunting and hiking trails. Still have it and still in use. I have cut vines out of trees where I should have used a chainsaw. Best machete i have ever owned.

It's alright

This machete lasted me a while, but the blade broke off from the handle. I wish that it was full tang but it isn't. The plastic coming from the blade into the handle cracked, and I was very mad about it. I loved this machete and used it so much, but for how cheap it was I think I got my use out of it.

Awesome!

I didn't actually buy this blade, but I saw is stuck in some wood (assumed someone left it there. It was kind of rusty and a little dull) but I fixed it up, and it's grade. With enough sharpening, it can cut through most medium-small branches and logs with ease. The serrated part is very useful, and the grip is amazing. Very easy to swing, and nice design. Very durable, great price, and recommend it for anyone.

PLS

As a surveyor for over 40 years, I have regular need for brushing tools. Having had disappointing experience with numerous other brands, when I saw the gator over a decade ago, the design looked convincing and the price was surprisingly reasonable. I bought a 2nd one not long after and never had a single issue with either. More recently I acquired the jr version which I also found extremely effective at closer range. However, I got in to some kind of hardwood and went a little crazy when it kept kicking my blade off to the side. I emerged victorious but to my dismay the blade got damaged, two marble sized bends right along the cutting edge. The metal was stretched and irreparable, what a bummer, except that when I took a picture and sent it to warranty, they replaced it, no questions asked. Would I recommend this ? Yes! Would I buy it again? Yes!

Amazing blade

First of I just want to say that this is an amazing peice I purchased this machete five years ago and have put it through everything a blade can go through from hitting rocks to leaving it out for weeks it has obtained several nicks and dings but nothing a trip to the grinder can't easily fix it has held up amazingly for the price being in constant use it has never rolled or chipped just miner dings the only real thing that might be a problem for some is the sheath but it's no big deal it worked fine for me overal this is worth at least twice what they ask for it

Love it!

I live in Honduras (Central America) and I have used my gator Jr. in many activities with no problem whatsoever. In our country you can have any type of machete as it's use regularly on outdoors activities. At the beginning, many laught at the gator Jr (due to its size), but after performing a few cuts here and there, many of my cross country friends start loving it. It's Med size make it easy to handle and very versatile. Sharping it with the proper tools was the key to cut with no hazzle. The saw works like a charm!

Real Estate

Well designed, compact, quality tool, at a good price ! Not designed as a full size bush machete, nor an axe. But, perfect for its niche.

Beautiful piece of work that everyone should have. For this price not to by one means you have no sense of aesthetics or love for beauty.

Mr.

Price vs. Quality. Did some backyard tree trimming with it. Hacking branches to pieces and stripping leaves off. Did the job ok. Is still sharp. Some hacking ended with point in the gravel so it has some dents at the point. Otheer than that an ok machete for simple backyard work. Don't expect high quality for this price.

Your Title

I'm surprised by the poor reviews. I did experience much of the problems mentioned in these comments with the use of my full length Gator Machete. It bent and chipped and seemed like a wrong match of steel for the job. Gator Jr. has given me 4 years or more of hard work and with care it still looks and performs great.

Customer

The tool itself is quite handy, but not having the sheath either Alice, Malice or Molle Compatible, it is Very awkward for easy carry. Are the clips/straps that expensive? The upper belt loop is fine for someone that only wears a skinny belt. Gerber can do better.

Great Gerber Product

Used 8 hours a day for 3 days straight. Cut small branches with one strike. 1/2 to 3/4 inch with 2 strikes. Even cut down small trees. Great product and highly recommended!

Good Tool, Defective Sheath

Bought For the wife's B.O.B. gear and the belt loop on the sheath pulled out at it's top seam before we could get it outside! This rendered the sheath useless for belt use. We have since taken the Jr. out for testing and found it to be a perfect match for the wife. Makes quick work of 3/4 to 1 1/2 material used for shelter or fire. 4 Stars for the Machete, Goose egg for the Sheath.

great blade

Just bout this. I have always been impressed with Gerber blades. This one lives up to the name. The high carbon steel blade was excellent for cutting light brush. It could have had a better edge. The edge was sharp but rough. Not a major issue for an inexpensive machete. Dinged the blade some when I encountered bricks where I didn't expect them. Re-sharpened the blade with a Lansky sharpening kit and really had to work at it. The steel on this machete is very good quality and somewhat difficult to sharpen. That is good as I won't have to sharpen it often as long as I don't hit bricks or rocks. I would definitely recommend this blade. Great job!

upset

They could be stronger. The blade on mine chipped just from clearing small brush. Kinda upsetting after hearing how good the brand is.

Survivor

I've been reading a lot of the reviews and for all the people that have broken or damaged your machete, sounds like you people are trying to cut trees down or split wood with. Machetes are not made for that kind of work its for small branches and clearing a path when in the woods. Also sounds like some don't have a clue on how to sharpen a blade. I've been using mine all spring and summer this machete is a machine and works great. People quit trying to cut down trees and strike at the proper angle of the branch don't strike straight into it, easier cut and less stress on the blade

Sharp

It's a great machete but after just a few hacks at the brush around my trails I bent the blade definitely needs to be stronger handle even being plastic with rubber on feels good in the hand

The Gerber Gator Machete Jr with Nylon Sheath is shorter and more packable. The two-sided blade has both a fine edge for hacking brush and vines and a rough cut saw edge for cutting branches, limbs and small trees. It's a high-carbon steel shaft with a Gator grip handle. For back-country travel, when every bit of weight is accounted for, the Gator Jr. is the right machete.
