Shopper : Is this the filter to use to photograph the solar ecliips?MARK S : no- UV filters have almost no effect on your image, they are used primarily for protecting your lens. KARL B : No, it blocks UV only, not visible light. Therefore, you cannot use it to view a solar eclipse. You would need a ND-16 or ND-32 filter for that.MICHAEL S : Absolutely not! The primary use of this filter is simply to protect the lens from scratches and to provide very minor improvement in clarity in certain haze/UV lighting. For solar photography you need a very special filter specifically designed for and advertised for this use.HEATHER K : Nope, not that kind of filter. Many photographers and cinematographers today also use UV filters as a protection against lens damage. In the event that a camera is dropped, it is much easier and faster to replace the cheap UV filter than an expensive lens.MARIO M : Absolutely not. It takes a very dark Neutral Density filter so the exposure is within the usual normal limits for the film or sensor. Look that up because I don't know how dark the ND filter needs to be. I am guessing it's about four f/stops in density.

neutral and glare free

keep on camera at all times to protect lens-my old one (not a Hoya) was shattered when I fell on the ice, but the camera was unharmed Hoya uses optical glass, is truly neutral and this type has multipal coatings to reduce glare

UV super multi coated filter

A bit expensive, but it was a recommended lens, so I wanted it. Had a bit of a hard time finding one, but was pleased to find that Adorama carried it.

Forgot it was there!

Put it on, and I no longer worry about ruining my expensive lens. Hasn't effected image quality at all. Just what I wanted.

What's not to like?

Pretty much, all I want this filter to do is protect the lens and not do anything bad to the image. It does this admirably. The optics are such that I do not know the filter is there. Well built and mounts so firmly that it seems like part of the lens.

Excellent workmanship

I had been using a Promaster UV filter for my HD video camera, and I was disappointed with the quality of the glass. I couldn't get it to be clear...all my cleaning efforts simply resulted in a smear which resulted in lens flares and bright lights ruining the image. So far, the Hoya is far superior and provides a image nearly as flawless as the bare lens while protecting the camera against damage and UV interference.
