Marvelous entry camera

I think the D40X is among the best cameras Nikon has ever made. Built like a tank, it has proved to be a rugged workhorse. After constant use for several years, I have moved on to higher Resolution Nikon Digital Cameras but the D40X remains in the bag as a dependable backup. I would highly recommend this camera whether it be new or refurbished by Nikon.

Great Bargin!

Although sold as refurbished, it was like new. The price was extremely good and I needed a second, backup camera should my primary D300 fail. I also use it when I want a lightweight, easy-to-use snapshot camera.

Going from an SLR to a DSLR

At first, I was really nervous about making the jump. Then, I was faced with choosing between the D40x and the D3000. After doing some research on the two I decided that I would use less of the higher ISO's that the D3000 offered and enjoy more of the image clarity of the D40x. I haven't regretted my choice at all! I just took a long trip to Phoenix and even visited a zoo and after the bus ride from Michigan to Arizona and back, it was only after an additional trip to the zoo that my battery needed charging after the initial charge. Getting used to pushing a button to change the aperture was tricky, but with practice I had it down in no time. The light meter is much more responsive than my FM10 and it gives a more detailed light relation for the photos. All in all, I would highly recommend this as a good first DSLR. It's light, easy to use and even it's automatic settings take beautiful pictures!

Huge Disappointment

This was my 2nd refurbished Nikon body I received that would not focus. I returned both and will just buy a new Nikon camera. It was a huge disappointment because I already own lenses and did not need a full package. [...] Shame on Nikon.

Great camera

I bought it without the lens so hat I could put my old Nikon lenses to good use. Most lenses I have require manual settings but the quality of pictures is great. I had almost forgotten manual settings but now I find them useful. It takes more time and calculation but each shot is worth the trouble.

What a little monster!

I bought this camera as a 3rd backup camera for my wedding business. I had to use it in an emergency and although it's a fantastic little camera, it didn't quite meet up to my expectations. As a consumer though, it's a wonderful bank for the buck. I plan on using this camera much more for personal use.

Great deal

Refurbished it may be, but it appears and works as if brand new. It was on sale for a great price, so I bought it. I'm quite happy with it. It's light in weight and therefore easy to carry around, epecially with my refurbished 16-to-85 mm VR zoom Nikor lens affixed to it. This combination allows me to easily grab shots while I'm on the go. It also serves as a backup to my D300 and F100. I highly recommend it.

D40x body

This is a great little Nikon body. Great results, much better than expected. I picked it up as a backup body for my D80, never really intending to use it except in emergency. However, I use it now about equally with a short zoom on the D40x and the longer one on the D80. No more lens switching in the field - nice! Construction feels a touch more plastic and lightweight than its bigger brother, but still Nikon sturdy. I do miss the lack of a bracketing button (for HDR), but that's a minor issue. For the money, this is a no-brainer.

Great Little Camera

I mainly use it to take snapshots of the grandkids and as a backup to my D300. The D40x is light in weight and small, but it still has enough features that allow anyone to take high-quality digital pictures. It's too bad that it doesn't have a built-in focusing motor, which means if you want autofocus, you have to have lenses with motors in them. Another lack is that it doesn't have a built-in dust shaker to knock dust off the sensor. But, the bottom line is that I got this refurbished camera, which is like new, for a very good price. I highly recommend it.

Very Nice Camera

I've used quite a few cameras that I liked, but this one is right up there with the best for ease of use and light weight. I miss the lack of bracketing and stopping down the lens for depth of field, but I have other cameras that do this. I just like how light weight it is and it's fun to use as a travel or walk around camera.

Nikon D40X Digital SLR Camera Body Only

A great camera at a great price, if you already have the right lenses. Wish Nikon offered a VR 300mm at a reasonable price for the D40s.

Good entry-level DSLR, but frustrating

I'm a semi-pro (print journalism but take my own pictures) and went over to digital because I no longer want to rely on whoever is working at the photo lab in the former USSR, where I do most of my work. I had been shooting 35mm with a Nikon N90s, and was looking forward to a smoother workflow. I didn't have the money for a really sophisticated camera to supplement my N90s, so I went with the D40x. What I like is the weight and compact dimensions as well as the build quality. It also is a low-noise camera, and has very good low light performance. What I'm not wild about are the inaccurate colors. Default is much too saturated, and it is hard or impossible to custom set for truly accurate colors. (Why does a consumer Lumix DMC FZ18 consistently render more accurate color?) The white balance is also problematic, and I have to pre-set WB often. While that isn't such an issue, again I notice that the cheaper Lumix (non-DSLR) has vastly superior auto WB. I've also noticed blue fringing with my Nikkor AIs 50mm lens, but I suppose any digital camera will produce fringing occasionally.

Great Value

Bought this as a first DSLR for a relative. Excellent value-size-features-quality ratio. A little small for balancing some larger lenses, but definitely a capable camera.

Great Camera

I bought the D40x Because I have many older Nikkor lenses.I can only use these lenses in manual mode with no metering,I am very adapt at using a hand held meter. I have Gotten exellent results, sharp images very low noise.Fast working. It dose every thing i need.My lenses give sharp images,I mostly use a Nikkor 35-105 zoom. The only thing bad is the LCD has no cover.

Looks brand new worth every penny

I like this camera very much it is very easy to use but comes with advanced settings so you can do just about anything with it. however It doesn't have in camera image stabilization which is why I gave it four stars most cameras come with it. Nikon, and Canon, should get with it. Price also could not be beat and you will not be able to tell it is refurbished.

Great Camera

I use this mostly for outdoor and outdoor sports photography. I think its great and the only downside is no auto bracketing and in an attempt to make it "beginner" friendly the number of buttons is reduced and those features are in various menus. though not difficult to access. No worries about being refurbished. Mine was impossible to separate from a brand new D40.

Great camera for the $

This is really good entry-level professional SLR camera. For someone like me and my wife, this was the best option. I have reviewed all models: D50 through D80 and seems that D40x has all the features that we need: f-stops, shutter speed controls, ISO adjustments. Mounted 18-200 and have no complaints. One thing: if you want to shoot at night, the controls are not well illuminated, so you may need to have your flashlight to adjust some things.

I love my (refurb) Nikon D40x!!!

I bought the D40x because I felt like I needed 10MP for cropping, and I already own the Nikon 18-200 VR. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the D40x doesn't have the sensor cleaner like the D60 does. But I wont be swapping lenses and that's why I got the 18-200mm. So all in all the D40x is on par with the D60, but with a lower cost to own. And the refurbished unit is mint and with Nikon warranty. I love mine!
