Questions & Answers

Shopper : Does the camera shake when the grip is mounted to a tripod? This has been an issue with other similar products. There seemed to be some play in the connections, allowing the camera to move on long exposures. Does this grip seem sturdy in that regard?Charles E : I mounted this on a very study gitzo and a solid large ballhead. It all cinched down perfectly well. I did not go go vertical with the entire arrangement because I don't have a specific arca plate for it to counteract twisting. A quick test suggests that vertical would be fine. Note, you can rock the grip a tiny bit by hand if you try, but left alone it is quite stable. You might notice some additional movement in higher winds than with no grip in play.AMEDEO C : I have not tested the unit for long exposure as of yet. My main reason for purchasing the unit was for the extra 1 to 2 exposure a second and extra battery life. It feels sturdy and tight against the body but I did notice if you are using a heavy lens like the Nikon 24 to 70mm f2.8 on a tripod it does cause a bit of strain and minor movement between the body and the pack. It's not as well constructed as the Nikon unit but again it's less than 1/4 the price of the Nikon pack. It is what it is for the price. Hope that helps.FRANK P : There is some flexure - I believe the base of the battery grip is not as rigid as it needs to be. However, that said, I don't know if it is much different than the Nikon unit and I'm happy with mine. When mounting it to a tripod, I use mirror lock-up/live view and a remote or timer release. I've taken astrophotos with the 24-120mm f/4. Files with 30 second exposures are generally sharp unless wind is an issue. Sky motion and light pollution are usually the limiting factor. I've also used it tethered - the extra power lets me get through a long portrait session(again remote release). Of course, if you use a telephoto with its own mounting foot, the question is moot. I also like the grip because my hands are big and the camera without the grip feels too small (I know that sounds strange for a D800). With it on the camera, you understand why pros like the heft and vertical grip arrangement especially with a big lens mounted. If you get it, use good AA nickel-metal-hydride rechargables with a lacrosse charger. Hope this helps.MARIO N : Hi. Its not sturdy at all but it gets me by. Feels like it might fall but it doesn't. For the money it gets the job done. I mostly shoot handheld. If u have the money invest in the Nikon version .hope its helpfull. TOMASZ S : Sorry I can't help. I've never used D12 and tripod combination. TomEXEQUIL B : Sorry I did not get a chance to use it yet. exequiel bDON R : I've not used this grip yet but I would assume that *any* add-on battery grip would add a level of instability when mounted on a tripod. Sorry I don't have more experience in this regard.JANIS G : I haven't experienced any issuesJERALD H : When you attach the grip to the D800, the locking wheel makes a solid connection that has always been solid for me with no movement or droop.STEPHEN K : This grip is no better but as good as Nikons. I don't use it for tripod use because it moves too much. OK for flash photography. Worthless for movie. ALBERT D : There is a very slight bit of play but very little. I have been quite happy with this item. For the money, I would place a piece of gaffer tape on the camera bottom and I bet the grip would be super snug.RON B : I have only used it on a tripod one time and did not find any play in the connection.ROYCE D : I have used the grip with my tripod many times without any problems. You have to realize that all photogs are not born equally. Some are brutes on their hardware with and without a tripod. When I use my tripod I always put my camera on timer mode, 10 seconds. When the image is taken my big old shaking hands are nowhere near the camera. Try it this way if you are concerned about the quality of your image. It may not be the grip, it may be you.THOMAS L : I have used mine only a bit. I can say there is a nice, tight fit between the camera and the grip. No shake. I cannot say if looseness will develop with continued use.TOM C : I bought the Flashpoint D12 Battery Grip on August 21, 2012. I have mounted it on my tripod, an older one which is not that great and wanting to upgrade and get a better one when time and money allow me to do so. However, I have taken several portrait shots, indoors, with my D800 camera and Flashpoint D12 attached and have never experienced any camera shake problems. My images have come out extremely clear using both a 24-70mm f/2.8 G lens and a 85mm f/2.8 D lens. I have also used the grip with my 70-200mm G lens and it worked great as well. The only problem I have had with it turned out to be operator error - my fault. I had just put in newly charged batteries, one in the grip and one in my D800 and it showed the batteries were no good and I couldn't do anything! After immediately puzzled and panicking, because I was about to take some shots of a couple models, I quickly composed myself and opened up the grip to check the battery. I had inadvertently originally put in the battery, not quite correctly, so it was not properly seated. Once I had taken it out and then reinstalled the battery 100% correctly, I closed the grip, remounted it onto the D800, and amazingly enough it showed full power and I succeeded in taking 21 excellent shots of the models - no problems! Interestingly enough, because the battery was incorrectly installed in the grip, the battery in the D800 itself also appeared to be dead resulting falsely that I had no power at all from either battery. Just something to keep in mind for future reference. Hope this helped. Sincerely, Tom CarlsonDAVID H : There is some unacceptable movement between the grip and the camera when attached to a tripod. I bought a nikon grip for my D300S and did not experience this problem. I would not buy another Flashpoint grip. It looks the same but the quality is not there.JAMES R : You are raising the camera about 1 1/4" higher off the tripod, so it has a tendency to oscillate longer when moved, but it is not caused by a sloppy or loose connection between the camera and the grip. This connection is solid.JOHN T : No, I did not notice any problem you've mentioned. In fact, one of the most recent photos I shot took 8 seconds at f/8 @ISO 100, and the image came up sharp. I know there are many similar products out their, but I think this is the best, even better than the Nikon's version; a friend on mind borrowed it for comparison with his Nikon version. Also, the vertical shutter release button is quite accurate, not too sensitive like the Nikon version.CHARLES M : The Grip works as well as the Nikon product I have both and I have the flashpoint on my 800
Shopper : IS THIS GRIP CONSTRUCTED OF MAGNESIUM?CHARLES M : I think it is made of some resin compound., It is light and works well. I just came back from 2 weeks in the Galapagps Islands and the grip[ preformed as it was supposed to per the informartion found of the Adorama websiteJIM S : No. It is plastic, but seems to work fine.GEORGE T : No...not for this price. However, It is well made and durable. It is probably made of injection molded ABS or polycarbonate.SCOTT E : I don't think so, but I absolutely love it for several reasons. 1. The camera felt front heavy with a lens on and it now feels much more balanced. 2. I like that fact it comes with two different battery trays, giving me more options. 3. Though it is not magnesium I am impressed with the quality of the construction. Hope this helps. ScottVINH N : Absolutely not. Item has worked fairly. Slight looseness to base of camera so there is slight movement but functions well.
Shopper : Does the Flashpoint D 12 work if only one battery is installed in the grip?Charles E : I tried it on my d800 and the combination does work when powered by a single battery in either the body or the grip.AUBREY J K : The grip will only hold one battery. The second battery is installed in the camera. If there is no battery or dead battery in the camera the battery grip will operate the camera.RIP R : yes it does. Great product and good price.MARC P : THE GRIP ONLY ACCEPTS 1 BATTERY NOT 2 YOU HAVE A TOTAL OF 2 WHEN YOU HAVE 1 IN THE CAMERA.JANIS G : My experience is that you MUST have a battery in the camera body when using the grip (along with the battery in the grip). after receiving this message, I tried with and without the battery in the camera body and the only time the camera would "power on" was when the battery was in the camera. You can choose which battery to use first, and don't forget to turn off the grip when you're not using it, so that you don't run the battery down....a voice of experience. :)

Try something else

Worked fine until I attached a heavier lens with a tripod. With my hand no longer supporting the lens the connection with the camera on the battery post would come apart and shut the camera down. I would not recommend

Cheaper than Nikon but not as durable

The battery grip works fine but they are not very well made and they tend to strip out on the tripod socket leaving your tripod stuck to them. The tripod socket could really use something to make it stronger. I must say Adorama was great about replacing it when it happened to me.. The product is ok and works like it should for the price. Its just not good for serious photographers who work a lot. Great price

Decent, build feels iffy

It seems to work fine. But build quality does not inspire confidence. Still, it's cheap enough.

Do Not Buy This... if you expect to make photos

I bought two of these battery grips for my Nikon d5300. Upon assembly, the contacts in the vertical housing would intermittently fail to maintain electrical contact.... the camera would power up then crash... power/crash. The contacts are poorly spaced in the encased connection pedestal inserted into the d5300. I would have to "bang" my palm on the bottom of the case to start/make a connection. I bought DSTE Battery Grip and now everything works perfectly. Flashpoint is faulty, sloppy manufactured. Get DSTE if reliability is important to you. Buyer be warned. Low cost and it works

I've only used it once, but it appears to perform satisfactorily. Given that it is only able 15% the cost of Nikon's grip, that is saying a lot. Would have given four stars, but I lack sufficient experience with the grip.

New Battery Grip

Probably wont use. For me it's too bulky and I believe it's easier just to carry a second battery, plus I get very good battery life, so to this point I haven't needed the extra battery power.

Nice grip for the price

It's nice to have the option to run it on AA batteries. All of the functions work just fine with my D7200. The rubber is soft and adds exceptional grip.

Barely adequate

Does not fit all that well -- slight gaps around the base. Difficult to keep tightly screwed in. Tends to eat AA batteries -- less than 200 shots using lithiums.

You cannot beat it for the price.

I use a D7200 with a Tamron 150-600 lens, no tripod for shooting Bald Eagles the Mississippi River. I gave it a 4stars rating because of it build quality, its not a Nikon. The unit works great and for the price you cannot beat it.

JUNK!!!

Great idea and concept - but poorly built. In order for the grip to work, it must be pressed on firmly and held there manually. The tighting screw will not hold the grip in place to power on the camera.

Performed just fine

I picked up the less expensive version because I needed additional battery power for a project. The grip attached to my d800 very securely and was stable on the tripod. I used OEM batteries and the body had no trouble linking to them. This has been my only use of it so far and have no sense of the button and controls other than just playing around a bit. I also cannot speak to durability. But the initial impression is positive, especially for the price paid. At some point I will get the larger battery/compartment door for additional power.

No problems

I read the reviews before purchase. I have none of the problems people have reported. I think this is a good product. My advice is buy the product, learn how to use it and take pictures!

Drains main battery

This is my first non-OEM grip. I always set the camera to use the grip battery first, then the body's battery. Upon using the D750 Flashpoint grip I thought I mistakenly didn't set the grip then body battery. But upon further testing the grip drains the body's battery basically 2-1, even when the camera is not on. I've read about this problem in the past for 3rd party grips. Makes it near not worth it. Remove the body battery and only use the grip battery. I'll be getting an OEM grip sooner or later to resolve this. I also noticed the lifespan of my grip battery quickly dropped from 1 to 2, unsure if it is the grip or just coincidence. Everything else works fine.

Great addition to my camera

The battery grip attached very solidify to my camera body. Makes taking vertical shots seemless with controls. I would recommend this product. It's a great deal for the price.

It does the job...

When purchasing an item like this, one always has the option of taking the original (Nikon) equipment, knowing that you get what you pay for. In this case the price differential is so large that taking a chance on a knock-off seems reasonable. I previously purchased a 'house brand' from an Adorama competitor. However the 2 wheels for adjusting aperture and shutter speed didn't work. I sent it back to the manufacturer after confirming on a friend's D750 that it didn't work there either. The mfr said it worked on their camera, but gave me a full refund anyway. All controls on the grip from Adorama seem to work properly. That said, I detect a few minor cosmetic differences between the two knock-offs. The most annoying is that the multi-selector on the Adorama unit is too close to the camera body - it's difficult, due to the fold-out LCD screen, to push the 'left' arrow, and sometimes the focus point indicator doesn't move properly. Not sure if this is because my finger is not positioned properly due to the tight quarters, but not a problem for me particularly. The fit to the camera body also seems a bit less precise, not hugging the body as smoothly as it might. The battery compartment lock handle works better on the Adorama unit. So for a few bucks less, and with the included wireless remote, I'm content that the basic functions work.

Not what you're looking for...

This grip drains your battery in hours. Other than allowing you flexibility with the shutter, it is more of a hindrance than an asset. Just buy the "real" thing.

Simple and intuitive

I bought this battery grip because I shoot a lot of video between shooting stills. It took a while but I'm now used to the extra bulk and weight. The Flashpoint integrates seamlessly with my D750 and the buttons and controls are easy to learn and reach. It's indispensible now. As an aside, this is one of the few non-OEM devices I'd recommend using with Nikon gear. I can't really think of a downside...the size is dictated by the D750 and the weight is minimal.

On-Point for What It Does

Great add-on for the Nikon D7100. The only slight wrinkle is that if you want to use 2 EN-EL 15 batteries at once, you'll have to remove the grip in-order to charge the one connected to the camera body. Other than that, fantastic alternative to the Nikon MB-D15 for photographers looking to not drop $200+ on a battery grip. Adds a nice, heavy feel to the camera, gives it that professional & solid look. Nice, snug fit, but is also easy to remove if need be. All in all, great product, does exact...

In addition, with the included battery magazine, you can also run the camera off six AA batteries.

The non-slip rubberized grip offers perfect balance in any direction with full vertical shooting controls, which can be independently turned on or off as the photographer needs to enhance camera handling, especially for shooting vertical pictures - not videos, please.
