Would have given it five stars if it was slightly more durable, but probably fine.

Great addition for CLS photography.

I used this curtain on a D610 in commander mode. The onboard flash fires a modeling flash that cannot be disabled.  The modelling flash caused ambient directional light that was unwanted in a dark setting which was only to be lit by a remote flash located elsewhere in the studio. This curtain worked with flawlessly when the camera was mounted horizontally & vertically.

Great buy, it does what you need.

If your camera has a pop-up flash and Commander mode to trigger Nikon iTTL Speedlights the camera's built in flash adds unwanted light on your subject.  With the Nikon SG-3IR which slides into the hot shoe it blocks the built-in flash and triggers your Nikon Speedlight.  It works great, my only concern is the durability because it's made of plastic.

Makes using the pop-up flash easier to use

Though this is a Nikon product it works fine on my Pentax, or likely any camera with a flash set up like traditional DSLRs or SLRs. Blocks any unwanted light from control onboard built in flash, but activates the off camera wireless flash unit slave. My only issue is the price seems a bit high for the little piece of plastic, but it meets my needs without trying to rig up some ugly thing myself. Worth it if you need it.

Simple but effective

With a slight modifiction to the SG-3IR's base, this unit can work as a shield to prevent the Canon DSLR's pop-up flash to influence a shot when using external Speedlites, as only the IR will pass through the filter, triggering the Speedlites.

I wonder why Canon hasn't marketed an item such as this one?

The one accessory you absolutely need Off-camera iTTL flash with Nikon speedlights. Pin does make the unit diffuclt to remove. I just popped it out and IR panel stays in without a problem.

I use this with my D7000 and SB700.  Blocks popup flash when operating the SB700 remotely

Works as intended

Many times you don't want your flash mounted directly on the camera for macro photography.  However, the CLS commander strobe from the built-in flash will illuminate the subject, altering the exposure.  This panel fixes that problem.  The panel clicks in place every 90-degrees, which gives it a very nice feel (in the stock photos of the item, it looks like the panel just dangles).  It also collapses nicely for packing.

I've seen complaints about "removal" of this from the camera..... I've not seen that! AND, who could ask for a more effective product for any less money????!?

Perfectly designed to do what it was meant to. Others have complained about it being hard to get on and off the hotshoe, but I've not seen that as an issue, at all.... very easy to use! Don't know how I've done without it all this time! Indespensable for my studio work!

a MUST have item!

A must have accessory when using a speedlight remotely. Installs on hot shoe easily and if built in flash needed panel flips up out of way. Is a little hard to remove from hot shoe due to spring loaded locking pin but with thumbnail it can be released fairly easy.

Does exactly what it is suppose to do.

This little thing does just what it is supposed to do:  That is, to block the light from the built-in flash while allowing the camera to communicate and trigger the remote flashes.  I listed "bulky" as a con for the product not because of its size (it's really small, actually) but because it's a rather difficult shape to find a spot in the camera bag for.  The front panel swings as if it were intended to fold up but that doesn't really help.  It's a minor objection, though.

Very cool little gizmo

Off-camera iTTL flash with Nikon speedlights is easy, accurate, reliable, but it will only be beautiful if you buy this accessory to block the on-camera flash from showing up in your pix. The manuals all say that the commander flash is too dim to be seen in pictures, but that's not true. This little chunk of plastic makes sure that no direct light spoils your pictures. I feel that it also helps prevent people from blinking because you won't be shooting flash straight into their eyes. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

The one accessory you absolutely need

I use this for all off camera flash when I need it for commander mode and do not want the cameras built in flash to conflict the lighting..it is small and non obtrusive ..the camera still looks professional and neat..

The perfect fit

Works as expected

As you probably know by now, if you're considering this piece of equipment, its intended use is to block the light from the pop-up flash from affecting the scene while allowing the flash to trigger a slave.  It does that, perfectly.  The only con is that it doesn't fold flat in some way, so even though it's really this little piece of lightweight plastic, it's a bit of an irregularly-shaped chunk that doesn't pack very well.

Does the Job

i needed a cover for the built in flash on the camera in order to trigger the remote speed light so that the direct flash wouldn't interfere with the photo head on.this was the perfect little gadget to place over the flash and still have it fire for the command remote on the camera

the best camera ive ever used my canon 5d mk2 and 7d it's still not a patch on the d200 i wish i had not broken it and replaced it with the canon system even my d50 kept on going till late last year until i sold it

Works great, my only complaint is the minimum/folded size is a space hog in my camera bag.

D90 too

DOes its job of blocking white light from the on camera flash, very important when using the commander mode built into you D90!  Unfortunately, it is a bit bulky the 2"x3"x3" (i'm guessing) box it comes in is about the minimum ammount of space required in your camera bag to carry this with you.  However, its very light.

ANother con, it is made of plastic which I knew and expected when ordering so it's possible to smash it in your bag but if you do that you probably have much more expensive issues to worry about ;)

This thing works great! I was apprehensive that the invisible flash would still reach the remotes but it triggers the SB-900's perfectly even through an umbrella with the SB-900 ir receiver pointed away from the camera.  More testing to do outside but this product seems to be a real winner.

Works like magic

This is an important add-on if you are using the Nikon Creative Lighting System.  It keeps the built in flash from interfering with your lighting and the other flashes in the CLS system and very easy to install and use.

A must have for command useage.

As other reviewers have noted the fit is way too tight in the camera hot shoe. There is a protrusion at the bottom of the foot of this item that should be sanded down so that it's easier to install and remove. You don't want this thing stuck in the camera.

On the plus side it works great optically (no unwanted light from the built-in flash). Once you make the slight modification it's a great value.

Almost ready to use, but get it anyway

This is a great little device.  I does the job perfectly and I am surprised that the description was limited to the D200 & D70.  I use on my D300.  

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because I find mine very difficult to remove.  Over all if this device is what you need it is just perfect for the task.

Great device

This IR Panel fits in the hot shoe mount.  It blocks the visible light portion of the on-camera pop-up flash from reaching the subject, but lets the Infra-Red (IR) portion of the light through.  This allows the pop-up flash to trigger remote flashes without affecting the overall lighting.  It works as expected.  One thing worth noting: On a subject with eyeglasses, the IR light caused a blue-purple reflection on the glasses.  I didn't notice any discoloration elsewhere as a result, but several images were undesirable because of the IR light.
