Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this lens good for zooming? and how far does it zoom?TONY S : I purchased this and the fisheye, along with the 16mm. I also have the 16-50mm. These auxiliary lenses will not fit on the 16-50mm.KEVIN G : This lens is not a zoom lens. It does NOT zoom. It attaches to the front of the 16mm pancake lens to make it mush wider. I LOVE it and use it all the time. It is very sharp and is not too fisheye like at all. Great for buildings, people, nature. I am very happy with it and it lives on the 16mm. I rarely take it off. Get it!ALAN K : The lens is not made for zooming & is best used on fixed Sony 16mm E-mount.RICHARD G : This isn't an actual lens, as it doesn't work on its own. It attaches to the front of the 16mm lens and makes it a bit wider. Neither it, nor the lens it works with zoom. RICHARD S : The converter only widens the view (more panoramic) no zooming is involved.DAVID D : This a primary lens. It does not zoom. However, it is a fine piece of glass and adds a new perspective to your photography. I use mine a lot and enjoy the results.MARK F : This isn't a zoom lens. It just makes the existing 16mm pancake lens have a wider field of view. You attach the converter onto the screw threads of the 16mm lens. It's nice for getting extreme wide angle shots.BRUCE J : Must be used with the Sony 16mm, f2.8 lens which does not have zoom capability.ECHOTEXT E : This is an add-on lens for the Sony 16/2.8. It makes that lens wider, but there is no zoom.FRANK U : Zooming means changing focal length. This lens is used as an add-on device to enlarge the angle of view of the 16mm (or 20mm) wide angle Sony E mount lenses by a fixed factor (25%). They do not zoom, these lenses with converter are of fixed focal lengths (12mm or 15mm). No zoom.GARY H : This is a 16mm prime lens - meaning it does not zoom at all. Fixed lens length of 16mm. You have to zoom the "old fashion way" - with your feet! :)PHILLIP W : It is a fixed length lens that increases the angle of the camera.XIAOFENG R : There is no zooming. Sony 16mm f/2.8 is a fixed focal length lens. The converter makes this lens wider.WAI-KEUNG N : No zooming. It is either to have the converter on or off. When it is on you get wider angle field of view which is great for landscape photo or doing video.
Shopper : Can the lens hood be removed from this converter? All of the photos I've seen of it (on and off the camera) have the hood attached. Asking because I'm interested in using the Sony 16mm + WA converter in an underwater housing. Thanks in advance.ROBERT B : No it is not removable. You want to keep it on anyway. I use it underwater with a domed port. No fit issues. You wont get good performance with flat port.RYAN M : No. You can not remove it. Though I'm sure if you have a large enough dome it would still fit in a Housing.SCOTT K : The lens hood is integrated into the lens and the lens cap works with the lens hood. if you dont need the cap, and u dont plan to resell the lens, probably you can find a way to surgically remove the lens hood, which is plastic, from the lens body, which seems metallic, with a bit of brute force. Its cheap enough so that you arent risking destruction of a multi-hundred dollar lensCHRIS S : It cannot be removed. LANCE A : Yes, the hood detaches easily from the lens. I took mine off and haven't bothered to put it back on as it makes for such a small package without it. THEODORE G : The hood is fixed... I stay above water... the converter works very well....WARREN T : Sorry to tell you that the lens hood is permanently attached and cannot be removed!XIAOFENG R : What you see is not a lens hood. It is part of the converter, and cannot be removed.FRANK U : No matter how I try to twist, tug at to get the hood removed, I have seen nothing budge at all. The hood seems to be glued (?) on and nothing but sawing it off can remove it, I am afraid. Maybe Sony has a better answer?ALEX H : No, the hood is built-in and not removable.ALBERT E : I have not been able to remove the hood.AUSTIN B : No, the small hood is not removable. I beleive they do this to protect the glass that sticks out (its a bubble due to the wideness). I hope that helps.IHOR W : The lenshood is a permanent part of the converter....non removable. you could cut it away or take the front bezel of the lens apart in order to remove it, but it would be semi permanent.GABRIEL L : The lens hood is permanently attached. I cannot find a way to remove it without doing so forcefully. (And even then, I'm not sure if it would just break off at that point, or if there's actually a clean way to take it off. It should be noted that I didn't try THAT hard to remove it since I didn't want to break anything. But I do feel like I gave it a reasonable pull and twist with no results.)ZEYA H : No, you cannot. It is acting as a protection of the lens itself and also give you better quality photos without affected by the light from other directions. Worth to have it on.

Terrific wide angle - no distortion

Bought this wide angle adaptor to take indoor shots of guest rooms in my Bed & Breakfast. It's really hard to get good shots of rooms, especially bathrooms (which are almost impossible without special equipment). This adaptor did a super job with no corner distortion. Easy to mount and remove too. Would definitely recommend.

Great lens for the $$

I use this for interior photography. the image quality it delivers is astounding. I am very pleased with this purchase. CA is definitely noticeable in high contrast edges. It's not an issue for web-based home tours, but if you make big enlargements (11x14 or greater) you WILL see it.

A nice addition

This little clip on gadget adds mobile wide angle capability to the Sony Nex 6. I had already purchased the companion fish-eye to this little gem. Both of these lenses add a surprisingly sharp flexibility to the camera. I know it isn't in a class like the 10-18 lens, but it $700 cheaper.

Main lens

Good for interviews when you can get very close to your subject and want to blur out the background.

Makes the 16mm 2.8 really useful

I have had the 16mm emount pancake lens for awhile. I don't use it much because the 18-55 emount is almost as wide. This adapter widens an image to 12mm or 18mm full frame equivilant. Now it makes the 16mm a truly wide lens. The attached picture which led into a series of swim pictures could not have been taken with just the 16mm. The lens is now uniquely useful on a NEX5N that produces great picture quality.

Great for architectural work

Just used extensively on a three week tour around England visiting stately homes in the National Trust. Absolutely essential for interior work where the 16mm is just not quite wide enough. Wouldn't travel without it, since it is so small and light. A bargain.

Wide Angle Conversion Lens

For all those that have complained that this lens does not work for the 30 & 50mm lenses, it is made to partner with the SEL16f28. It works brilliantly with the 16f28 on my FS100 Super 35mm sensor. Exceptionally sharp too, and does not seem to effect the low-light performance of the SEL16f28. No noticeable CA, and very little corner distortion. The build quality is good, and the lense comes with a sturdy protective case as well.

Wider

I used the 16mm lens without the wide angle converter and then added it. What a difference! Landscape is much more grand with it. See for yourself.

Widen Your Horizons

When wider is better, this lens gets the job done. This lens has very little edge distortion and is nicely compact so it doesn't take up much room in your bag or add weight to your shoulder. For more dramatic effects, there is also the Fisheye attachment lens (see that product review).

Nice wide angle

This is a great add-on lens for those looking for some wider angle shots. There is some distortion at the corners but hardly noticeable/bothersome unless you're looking for perfection. It's affordable compared to buying another lense, but obviously the performance isn't comparable. Just remember that the kit and pancake lenses cost 300 and 250. The soft plastic lens cap is horrible. I'm bound to lose it sooner or later. It isn't designed to click in place, instead it merely "holds" onto the lens. Whenever I use it, I just leave the cap in the bag and that leaves the large front element susceptible to damage.

Good addition to your arsenal

This lens works great with the 16mm attachment. It is the only reason for owning the 16mm lens. Great for group shots, self shots and panoramas. If you like to use the panorama feature on your nex camera this lens is a must. The only downside is that there is no zoom when used with the 16mm lens. I have tried to attach the wide angle to the 18-55mm with no success. Overall, for the price it is a fun addition to my growing lens collection.

I love it

its is perfect for the 16mm lens but not as well with the zoom so was unable to use when subjects were at a distance... good for scenery and group photos or close ups.
