Batteries not included—the dreaded words on any package. Toys, remotes, even toothbrushes need batteries these days. Fortunately, rechargeable batteries have never been more affordable or better. The same can be said for regular disposable ones, too. Good household batteries and accessories are a must for any home. Here’s a look at the different types of batteries you’ll come across.

Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and accessories

This is one of the two standard rechargeable battery types, the other being nickel-metal hydride (NiMH). Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in everything from mobile phones to electric cars. They’re lightweight and can generally hold more charge than NiMH. However, they may not last as long and are typically more expensive. They are also not normally a direct replacement for devices that recommend NiMH or alkaline, even if they’re the same size (“AA” or “AAA,” for example).

Don’t confuse lithium-ion, a rechargeable battery, with lithium (no “ion”) batteries. Lithium batteries are not rechargeable. They’re also commonly found in “button” and other smaller-than-normal battery sizes in many electronic devices.

NiMH batteries and accessories

NiMH batteries have largely replaced the older NiCd, or nickel-cadmium, rechargeable batteries in most devices. They don’t hold quite as much energy as a lithium-ion battery of the same size but are typically far less expensive. While NiMH batteries cost more initially than non-rechargeable batteries, over their life they’ll cost you far less than having to endlessly replace disposable alkaline models.

Alkaline household batteries and accessories

Alkaline is the long-standard in disposable batteries. They come in all shapes and sizes, and if you’ve ever bought disposable AA batteries they were almost certainly alkaline. You can use them in just about any compatible device. In devices you use regularly, a rechargeable battery like NiMH will save you money in the long run, and they’re better for the environment.
