What is an electronic drum kit?

The modern electronic drum kit consists of rubberized pads and a drum module that produces synthesized acoustic drum and percussion sounds. The rubber (or mesh) pads are velocity-sensitive, and the sensors in these pads react to your playing style for an acoustic-like experience.

With the drum module, you can change the layout of your drum and cymbal pads, play a backing track, and even record your session. Most drum modules today are loaded with more than 300 sounds, a feature that allows you to play any song without upgrading your kit.

Electronic drums are quieter than traditional acoustic drum sets, too. When turned off, the only sound you’ll hear is the drumstick hitting the rubber pad. To get the full, rich sound of a full drum kit, you’ll use an amplifier or headphones for a robust playing experience.

How to choose

For beginners, any electronic drum kit with at least four drum pads and three cymbal pads is a great choice. Consider a complete kit like the Ddrum DD Beta XP2 , which is packed with all the essentials including a throne and headphones. For players who want to take their drumming to the next level, mesh kits from Alesis or Roland are great options.
