I have been wanting to add a zoom lens and this is this is the perfect solution. I plan to carry it everywhere as I take my dog for walks around the city. It fits my Nikon D5100 and my needs perfectly. At this time, I don't shoot sporting events so I didn't go with the 70-300 lens but may add that in the future. Online chat was of great help.

I just got this lens to take on our trip to Italy and Greece in November and LOVE it! I would suggest it for anyone looking to extend beyond the 18-55!

I've had the lens for about a month now and am very pleased with it. Indoor shots are not ideal but if its scenery and/or sports its been working great. Overall for the price i think it's a good buy.

Defintely a great lens for the money. Read some reviews on it and was impressed with how highly the optics scored. It's 2 biggest downfalls are the slow speed (f4.0 is the fastest at 55mm) and it's plastic mount. I've read that you should never hold the camera by the lens, because of the plastic mount. It seems pretty solid and I'm sure I'll have many years of use if I remember that simple rule. The autofocus is pretty quick, not lightning speed but definitely very good. All in all, I'm very happy with the lens.

This lens has issues. Without the stabilization, it is not much better than a paperweight. Spend the $$ on the image stabilization or move up to the VR 70-300 - great lens!!!

Beginning user, this lens is great so far. I've used it at some sporting events and at a parade. Some sport event images were not in focus, but I think that's user error and not the camera or lens.

Not for fine photography, but good companion to 18-55mm for normal pix.

This was a gift that came with a cleaning kit and a UV filter. We have only had it for just a few weeks and deffinetly put it trough it's paces. Considering everything that we got for the cost this has well exceeded our expectations. It is a nice upgarade from the stock 35-55mm lense we had. We are getting better shots of our kids without having to be right on top of them for the shot.

This lens is great and you can really get some great pictures using it. I used this lens while I was on a cruise recently and during training at work and the pictures were outstanding. The guys at work were very impressed with how the pictures came out. Another worker also has the same camera and couldn't be happier.

Simply stated, nice bang for the buck.I'm your run of the mill hobbyist photographer, and carry this lens with me all the time. I really do use it for pretty much everything, other than shooting kids sports games and fast action events. The lens handles well and doesn't feel cheap, from what I've researched it's cheap because comparatively speaking, it's slower than its more expensive counterparts. I primarily use the lens for shooting wildlife, landscapes and portraits. It does all this just fineI don't really mind the slower focusing speed as I'm not your pro photographer, there are really only two things that iono keeps it from being a 5 I guess. The hood and focus ring. The focus ring I knew to be a funky feels as though it could have been raised about a millimeter or two. Also the hood doesn't really seat solidly on the lens. It does sit just fine and doesn't audibly rattle when on and it does do it's job really well, it just feels like it could have been made to fit more snugly. This is my first hood, so perhaps they're all made to really come off with minimal effort? I don't know. In the end for the price and quality of picture you can get with this, it's most definitely worth having, and I've suggested it to many of my friends. If you want to see what sort of pics can be taken with this lens do an af-s 55-200mm nikkor search on deviantart's webpage. In this case, the price is hardly indicative of the quality of pics you'll get. Purchase and enjoy![...]

I was told that this lens would be too heavy to use and that i should spend the extra few hundred dollars and get the VR but let me tell you, I cannot even feel a diference in weight when I use this lens compared to my 18mm - 55mm. Great lens

great lens but in many cases it just eats light, if you don't have an external flash, a perfectly lighted gym will look light nightlife, its a constant battle between shutter speed and f stops, would be great if it had 2 more stops to work with, still great low cost lens, not to heavy, small, good zoomth. yes i said zoomth,

This lens came with the 18-55 lens and my D40 kit. Tried it out over a couple of hours and I like it. I especially like macro photography, so I've attached a couple of shots from this lens and my D40. I cropped these pix out of their larger originals, and they were shot with the lens in hand less than 48 hours. Been hearing so much about the VR lenses I was especially concerned about camera shake, but overall, handheld without a tripod and shortly after a fresh cup of strong coffee, it looks like this lens works just fine for me. For its price, range, and overall effects, I'd say it's a keeper.

I had concerns that the lens would not focus fast enough for shooting birds in flight. It was a pleasant surprise that it could focus that fast. The pictures taken at the full 200mm were sharp when enlarged on the computer screen. I also like the light weight for packing into remote areas.

I purchase this lens as a complement to my 18-55 kit lens that came with my Nikon D50. This baby is well worth the money! I have been using this lens to photograph some wildlife, as well at some sporting events. If you are looking for an affordable, well built lens, manufactured by the OEM this would be a good choice. So far, I've used this lens mostly for high school basketball. I like the results I've gotten so far, but, there's always room for improvement.

As a long time user of Nikon SLR's and lenses, this product performed as well as any of the old lens for film type SLR's, without the weight and bulk.

I love it. I get all the credit for great pictures when all I did was push a button.

The lens is not that sharp, and manual focus is well nigh impossible because of the narrow and badly placed ring at the front. Autofocus is a bit slow. I would recommend that you spend more and get the 18-200 mm lens with image stabilization. This lens is not much more than a toy.

This lens produces great photos, is lightweight and easy to use. I discovered, though, that when photographing football or soccer games from the sidelines that you really need a bright sunny day to get sharp photos.

Have had very good results using this lens since the camera, a Nikon D70 came with only a 18-55mm lens. But of course subsequent Nikon D models have come with one lens that covers this whole spectrum.

AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED A compact, lightweight and affordable 3.6x high-power telephoto zoom DX ideal for use with Nikon digital SLRs
This ultracompact, lightweight telephoto zoom lens has a 3.6x 55-200mm focal range and offers a remarkable cost-to-performance ratio. Its optics are optimized for use with Nikon digital SLRs, and it is ideally suited to the new Nikon D50.
The compact zoom lens offers powerful zoom performance of 55-200mm (providing a picture angle equivalent to an 82.5-300mm lens in 35mm format) and is suitable for everything from candid portraits to sports, nature and wildlife photography. The newly developed compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) has given rise to an ultracompact, lightweight design with excellent handling characteristics. Including the new compact SWM, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED measures a compact 68 x 79mm (2.7 x 3.1 in.) and weighs approximately 255g (9 oz.).
For optics, two ED glass elements achieve high resolution and contrast while minimizing chromatic aberration and other forms of distortion. The new compact SWM built into the lens offers the smooth and quiet autofocus performance that users have come to expect from our existing SWM.
By using this lens and the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens, photographers have a focal length range from wide-angle 18mm to telephoto 200mm (providing a picture angle equivalent to a 27-300mm lens in 35mm format), covering an extremely wide variety of subjects and shooting situations. The range of these ultracompact, lightweight lenses, combined with its high-quality performance, will expand the photographic horizons of Nikon Digital SLR owners. The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens will be simultaneously released with the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED lens.
Note: This lens is not compatible with 35mm [135] or IX240 format film cameras.
