Refurb not worth it

Purchased as a refurbished lens before the 2020 shutdown so I didn't really get a chance to take it out and use it before the warranty expired. When I did finally get to do some shooting the lens was slow and clunky. I ended up mostly avoiding it and then it finally just stopped focusing all together, both in auto and manual. Obviously I got a dud, I just wish that I had known while it was still returnable.

its a really sharp nikkor lens

its a really sharp nikkor lens however on my Nikon D7000s I find it hunts & pecks for even stationary subjects if that doesnt bother you or you arent shooting moving subjects its a great lens the "G" gelded works on about 90% of nikon cameras its a FX full frame lens or 35mm capable lens add 1.5 X crop factor or 42 to 450mm for DX crop cameras

Amazing lens for d600

Amazing lens, extremely underrated and underpriced. Im a 16 year old proffesional photographer (started with a coolpix w150 when i was 8) and i also work on lenses. This is amazing. The sharpness, microcontrast, af, build, controls, size...i love it. I wrote it off, since i thought it was only a 70-300 kit lens. I couldnt be more wrong. Yes, its a 70-300 kit lens, but it is amazing. The vr ll is almost as good as the vc on my tamron 24-70 2.8. Great on my d600 as well as a d850.

Good economy lens

I have been using this lens on my 2 cameras for years now, it’s a lightweight and quick focusing when lighting is good, slower focus in poor light, but still gets the job done!

Amazing!

Fantastic lens. Sharp as a tack, and the VR works perfectly. I bought it mostly for Air Shows, where the Nikon 1's fast focusing shines, but it's so much fun to use that I've been using it for all kinds of photography: birds and animals, details of old buildings, even portraits. It's big for a Nikon 1 lens, but tiny for it's reach. A bit expensive, but worth every penny

Great first impression!

Initial impression is that's it's a beautifully clear, fast autofocusing well balanced lens; just getting started using it, more to come as I get more experience with it.

Great Long Zoom Lens at an Affordable Price!

My name is Doug Ward and I am a Professional Photographer. I have been taking great photos with this lens for over four years now. I can take very sharp images of wildlife while hand holding the camera, with a wide aperture setting such as f6.3. The Nikon Vibration Reduction (VRII) really works wonderful. If you have a little more time to photograph your subject, the lens will work at its peak performance on a good tripod with a remote. If you purchase this lens, I am sure you will be as happy as I am with the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Lens

Great all-around Zoom Telephoto

Have had this lens in my camera bag for almost 10 years and it has never disappointed. Have used it on both my digital cameras (D300 and D610) as well as my F100 for everything including wildlife and sports photography. Sharp at all settings, quick autofocus, and overall great contrast and image quality.

My first FX camera

Bought this lens to take photos next year for D3 football at the recommendations of Nikon support. Also love birds and wildlife. Before this FX camera my best camera was a Nikon sure shot. This is my second day using the lens, out the back door nearing sunset. Photos taken at 7K and cropped. not too bad. This camera D750 is the biggest gift I have ever gotten for myself, and it is going to make getting old a blast!

Performs well

This lens was also on the lower end of the pricing scale but it has performed extremely well. I take astrophotography pictures using this lens with a Nikon D810-A and the images are much better than I expect. Even when pointing straight up there is no sliding out of focus. I would definitely recommend this lens.

Christmas Gift

We purchased this as a Christmas gift for our adult daughter. It was on her wish list. We are unable to give an honest evaluation since we aren't the ones using it. Purchase process was easy and very quick and the lens arrived safely and well packed. The evaluation above reflects the purchase process and not the lens itself!

Inexpensive Lens purchased to test my resolve to spend a few grand on a pro lens.

I have been flirting with the idea of dropping a few grand on a pro tele lens in the 300 to 400 mm range. My fear was/is that I would not use the beast enough to justify the amount spent. This lens was my fall back position to test my resolve to bet my retirement on a pro lens. To be sure it is a bottom shelf plastic lens that would be vulnerable with rough use. The absence of VR necessitates a tripod, and f4.5 isn't going to win any races and low light environments are not its forte. That said the photos have been sharp and the fun factor is high. For occasional use I think this is a very practical choice. If I find I am shooting a bunch at extended ranges I will undoubtedly upgrade. If I only use it on rare circumstances it will stay in my bag for a long time.

The clarity of the lens is stunning

The clarity of the lens is stunning. This lens spends most of it's time on my little V2, it's as good as any of the full frame prime big lenses I have owned. Incredible reach, and it's sharp wide open.

Disappointing

I purchased this after reading several glowing reviews – actually, comments in reviews for other lenses that said they preferred this one – and deciding it met my needs for bird photography. The first one I received was very noisy, with a lot of grinding while it tried to autofocus continuously. Images were soft or not in at all in focus. I tried tests, shooting road signs in broad daylight, and edges weren't crisp. I tried another lens, a Nikkor 55-200mm, which worked so much better. I decided I had a defective unit and returned it to the seller for a replacement. The second unit was a little better with finding focus – no so much constantly seeking – but still noisy when it did. But the focus was even fuzzier, with bright objects having a strong aura surrounding them. I also sent this unit back, this time for a refund while I decide what I'm going to do next. Did I just get two lemons or was my experience typical with this lens?

Great lens for action and nature!

By scottshot

I bought this lens because I could not afford the 70-200 and actually the lens is very good and you get the added 100mm. This lens is not heavy, focus is fast and is easy to use. I use it for architectural detail shots, landscape, nature and sports. The VR works as designed and is priced right!

Love this lens

By Ashley R.

The title sums this lens up well. I love this lens, and a good upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens. Although, I wish I could have bought the VR version, I am completely happy without it. My images generally turn out great even without it. I use this on my D3100, and even though I have to manually focus(which I did even with my kit lens) it works perfectly fine, where some people online were saying it doesn't work well with my camera model. Over all, it's amazing for it's price and zoom range.

new high-performance 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor lens, featuring a new optical formula and Nikon Vibration Reduction (VRII) this new Zoom Nikkor is capable of producing images with clarity and contrast typically found in lenses costing much more. Comprising many of Nikon's most advanced features such as Nikon ExtraLow Dispersion (ED) glass, Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and enhanced Vibration Reduction (VRII), internal focus (IF), as well as optics perfected for use with both Nikon DX format digital and 35mm filmSLR cameras, the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor is sure to appeal to a broad spectrum of Nikon photographers.

Limited Quantity Per customer

Nikon 70-300mm Features

  • Nikon's exclusive VRII technology minimizes the effects of camera shake, allowing photographers to shoot hand-held at as many as 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise bepossible, assuring dramatically sharper images in challenging shooting conditions. Normal and Active VR modes are available.
  • Construction features 17 elements in 12 groups with two ED glass elements to minimize chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range while ensuring high resolution and contrast.
  • A nine-blade rounded diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.
  • The Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast and quiet autofocusing and smoothswitching between autofocus and manual operation. Two focus modes are available ½ M/A and M.
  • The added compactness and constant lens length provided by an Internal Focus (IF) design means improved handling characteristics and the elimination of the rotation of the front lens element, facilitating the use of circular polarizing filters.
  • Picture angle is 34½20' - 8½10' with 35mm SLRs and 22½50' - 5½20' with Nikon DX format SLRs. (When used on a Nikon DX-format DSLR, the effective picture angle is similar to that of a 105-450mm lens on a 35mm film SLR.)
