Questions & Answers

don B : Do you have any suggestions or tips on using it? How to attach to SB800? One review said don't place close to flash; How do you use this without getting "close to flash?"HOWARD M : Sorry to say it, I didn't use the filters for that purpose. I used one for an internal lens filter on a nikon lens. I never even considered their intended use.PAUL B : I use these on an SB600 and they are designed to be held on by the wide angle defuser. I have had them get a bit wrinkled when using the flash on full power but never on lower power settings. I have never attempted to mount them another way and have just assumed that they will have to be replaced sooner or later. I don't use them often, only occasionally. They do perform well but if you intend to use them a lot and on high power you may want to consider another option. Hope this helps.THOMAS J : I use the SJ-1 kit with my SB-600's. The instructions that come with the set are easy to understand. You just bend the filter where the two slots are, fold it all the way over to get a good crease. You then insert the smaller portion into the flash head at the top where the wide angle adapter is. The filter sits neatly over the flash head. These are disposable filters, they are not meant to last forever. The color will fade over time from the extreme brightness of the flash going thru it but the kit contains more than one color and it is inexpensive too. They work great and add some creative color to shots both indoor and outdoor. Tom J.BOB D : These attach to the flash by bending at the perforated area between the wide part and the narrow part. The perforation then tucks under the diffuser panel built into the speedlight. I usually tape the bottom of the gel down as well. I have never had a problem with them overheating and warping or melting. The SB-900 version has warped on me before but those are mounted under a plastic cover. These just go on the front of the speedlight and seem to keep cool.STEPHEN H : You use these to match the color of the scene you are shooting. Say it is a night scene and there is the glow of fire. If you use just the flash then you will wash the original look of the scene and make it more white in appearence. using the amber filter in the kit will correct this a great deal then you can finish with photo shop.. Other colors are good for other applications such as green helps in some flouresent lighting. If you will be using multiple flashes then you can use it to add different color backdrops to the seen at different angles. they are placed in between the built in diffuser and the flash housing (atleast that is how i use mine). You fold them were the holes are cut out. I have shoot with mine probably 2-300 times with the same gel and it has not deformed yet and this is with some continuos flashing. That is when you will deform them the most if you are rapid flashing. You have to remember that this is a consumable item and they will eventually give out. Most of the colors have two gels each. I would not leave with out them if i am going to be using the flash alot. While i try to shoot with native light as much as possible it is nice to be able to correct the color of the flash when i need to use it.JACK K : I use them on my SB-600. They are attached by folding the tabs to a 90 degree angle and slipping the angled side in the slot between the wide-angle diffuser and the flash lens. This should be the same for the SB-800. Instructions are included with the kit, which is very compact and easily fits in a pocket in your case. The filters are thin and the heat from the flash can distort them, so you shouldn't rapid fire the flash with the filters attached. I don't know how you could keep them away from the flash so that they'd still be effective. The bit of distortion normally doesn't affect picture results as long as you don't melt them by firing successive flashes through them. You can keep distortion to a minimum by allowing the flash to cool down between shots. Four of the red and blue filters and two of each of the others are provided so you have spares when they wear out or are damaged.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DAVID B : I use these gels often to balance the light -- very handy to have around -- good buy.

Indispensable for working with flash.

Can't use flash without these white-balance matching filters. Good that there are duplicates for when they wear out. And the price is right.

Nice package of filters, but pricey

This is a nice package of useful filters in a handy case. Gels are consumable items. The flash heat does wrinkle them (does not affect performance), and with heavy use the color will wash out and make the material brittle. Given that filter gel material is not terribly expensive in larger sheets and the cost of die cutting them is not great, the price is a little high. In addition this is a relatively small range of colors. The standard color correction gels are there, but for dramatic effects, particularly on backgrounds, a wider range might be needed. In that case use the Nikon gels as a pattern to cut out custom filters from bulk sheets from Rosco, Lee, et al. One gel that is missing for macro work is a neutral density filter where sometimes flash power under the minimum settings are needed. As I often use modifiers that clamp around the flash head, I do not use the typical Velcro attachment for gels. The Nikon gels fit flush with the sides of the case. The built in wide angle diffusers in my SB-600s can be placed over the filter gels to better hold them in place which us is usually desirable in softening the light anyway. A small criticism of the SB-600 (also SB-800) flash units is they are not provided with a more substantial means of holding filters, such as the separate SZ-1 filter holder provided with the SB-900, which is why the Velcro attachment method is so popular.

I like - does the job

I prefer these to cutting film and using tape. Not overly durable but what really is nowadays . . . ?

These are great!!

If you are using you flashes to mix with lights then these are a must have!! I have been using the SB-800 for a few years now and they are wonderful. Using them off camera to make great personal portraits and even big group shots. It is one of cheapest way of carrying full color range gels...

Good Effects

We all know what we can do with gels. Pricey because of the name but they are easy to mount on the flash. Pay for convenience I guess.

Don't buy these

These color filters are gimmicks, with basically no practical application. I regret buying them. It's possible they might come in handy for some kinds of creative lighting situations where you wanted to create an unnatural look.

Marginally Functional

These plastic sheet filters are expensive also they are consumable (disposable) and disfigure with use. There are better devices to acc0mplish the same purpose.

these work

The filter function works well and you do get multiple uses from these but I use them on an SB600 and after a few plashes the heat start to take its toll on the filter but they do the job.

Great Product

A must have if you use the flash. I saw many comments complaining about the price..I agree it is a little bit pricy but they are easy to use and they fit perfectly on my SB-600. I would buy them again!!

They work fine - But at what cost

Definate mark-up on these little Gems. I am OK with how they work but In my opinion we should be getting them for free with the flash unit. Flimsy little Die-Cut Plastic. They melt too if you get them to close to the flash. The only thing I like is the compactness.

An important part of the flash gear.

Absolutely critical to have the Tungsten and Fluorescent filters for indoor flash photography; the other filters are mostly just an interesting "bonus" bundle.

Excellent Filter set!

I used mainly the red and blue filters so far on the SB-600. The blue adds a lot to the photos for a blue gradient type effect that turned out very nice! The red was not so overpowering but added a nice tone to the photos.

great price

This is a neat little set because it comes with so many colors and shades. I used it to balance the blue cast from a tent we were meeting under for a family get-together. It would also work well for artistic shots to make the grass greener or set the mood. I wasn't pleased to learn that it can melt and be consumed... this hasn't happened to me yet... but I was surprised that these aren't just an overlay that can be used to exhaustion.

Good, but not Great

Ordered these to modify the White Balance on my Nikon SB-800 flash. They work pretty well and do alter the WB as they are advertised. Do not especially like the light weight material they are made of. Would like to see a more substantial material used. Also not overly fond of how filters need to be folded and "attached" to Flash unit.

Interesting Effects... expendable produc

These are standard gel material cut so that they can be inserted into the SB-800. They do a satisfactory job of filtering light from the flash to a single color. Because it is just folded gel, they tend to leak light from the sides. Additionally, they fade and melt under heavy flash use, so these should be considered an expendable (it says this right in the manual, which you should read). For frequent users, purchasing sheets of gel and cutting them for one self would a better deal. This would also let you get more colors... the Yellow and Blue filter do not make green light, and doubling the florescent filter is not very affective. That all said, the filter kit is very handy and fun, and can be used to make rather ordinary scenes look amazin gin the right hands.

Necessary filters

When I bought my SB-800, I was somewhat surprised to find that it didn't come complete with a set of filters. Well, this accessory will fill most simple filter needs. Buy a second set - you may lose or damage a filter or two in use.

A Step Above DYI Solutions

I love these. I've tried some of the DYI solution out there (taping sample gels for theater supply stores for example). These are purpose built for balancing the light from your flash with the available light. The carrying wallet is a nice bonus. They are thin so if it's breezy you may want to put a little piece of tape on them or flip your diffuser down over them.

Cooler than you'd think

White balance, dude, won't correct for fluorescent and tungsten, nor will it give you funky art gels like blue and red to punch up backgrounds at whim. Considering you get 20 total gels -- including replacement gels for two shades of tungsten and fluorescent -- this is a pretty good value. Much better than trying to "home remedy" a solution with theatrical shop gel samples.

For specialized situations

Works well to add color to a background or for special effects. Other than that... use your in-camera white balance adjustments.

If you need flash gels for a Nikon SB-600, I don't know why you'd use anything else. Easy to attach and they come in a nice folder allowing quick access.

• The SJ-1 allows for modification of the flash output to be matched to the background scene. This is especially useful for digital cameras where "white balance" can be controlled.
• For instance, when shooting with a flash under fluorescent lights the foreground will be white, but the background will still have a green cast. By using a green filter the flash output gets converted to match the rest of the scene, and the camera's White Balance setting can then be set to "Fluorescent".
• The blue, yellow, red and amber filters can be used for creative lighting control, and can add dramatic colors to the image, especially when more than one flash is used.

What's in the box:

  • FL-G1
  • FL-G2 (Fluorescent Balancing) & TN-A1
  • TN-A2 (Tungsten Balancing) & Red+ Blue+Yellow+Amber Filters & Filter Case.
