Shopper : Hello, is this a manual focus lens?ANTHONY R : This is lens is entirely manual, everything from focus to setting the aperture. The aperture is set via the dial on the lens barrel. There are no electrical contracts between the lens and camera.STEPHEN W : the lens is manualETHAN G : Yes, but the nex series camera will try to auto focus the entire frame into view if set to auto focus in the options. The camera will compensate as if you were using a fixed mm of infinity if the option remains on. This makes it much the same as a point and click camera. If set to manual focus the lens will allow you to work in full manual mode. I found that the iso adjustment will become your go to setting in low lighting conditions. Great lens though and extremely fun to use. The bokeh produced is amazing and I haven't found another lens in the price range that produces similar results. Was even nicer than my Sony 30 mm macro lens. Hope this helpsRICHARD V : Sorry. Don't recall. The lens worked well. I recall that. LAWRENCE G : Does this lens require an extension tube for 1:1 macro photography? If so where do you get it, not listed as an accessory.ROBERT S : It focuses to .24 meters covering a 5x7 inch field of view on the APS-C format. However this lens is NOT designed for macro use. On my NEX6 I use a Nikon 55mm f/2.8 macro lens ($84 Ado used) and a PK-13 extension ($42.50 Ado) for 1:1. You will need a Nikon-E mount adapter. I like the Fotodiox. It's about half the price of the Metabones, but Ado doesn't carry it. If you need a lens similar to the Magic, I highly recommend the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 ($199 Ado new). I use this lens for 90% of my shooting. It focuses as close as the Magic.

Remember, it's Manual!

I should start by saying that I do not own this lens, but I feel compelled to comment because of the previous review. This lens is "all manual" so the Sony NEX cameras will not recognize it. The lens does not have electronics. To use this lens, you should be able to go into your Setup menu and enable the shutter to "release w/o lens", and then everything will work just fine. The lens has a manual focus ring, and a manual aperture ring. You'll still select the shutter speed on the camera.

The SLR Magic 28mm f/2.8 lens is a multi coated manual prime lens that is made to work with the Sony NEX system for camera bodies such as the NEX-3, NEX-5 and NEX-VG10. Lens is in native E lens mount and will work directly on your camera! What is really special about this lens is that it is very light weight (280g) and has a unique rotational aperture disk. When wide open it produces silky smooth bokeh. When stopped down it still produces silky smooth bokeh. It is because the rotational aperture disk ensures a perfectly round aperture opening at all times for the perfect bokeh. It is the signature of this SLR Magic lens. The lens is great for creative photography.

A perfectly round aperture is achieved at all times means great portrait photos can be achieved. The fully manual lens is great for creative photographers who would like to take artistic photos with a shallow Depth of Field.
