I've had this drive for a little over 2 years. It has been flawless. It resides in a desktop that runs Linux, formerly with an AMD Phenom II 965 processor on an Asrock board, and now is on an MSI board with an Intel i7-6700k. I had no trouble formatting it into two partitions. It fits into the same space that any 2.5" spinning drive would fit.

No complaints so far. I haven't loaded up the filesystem yet, so not sure how garbage collection will impact it once it gets full. Also not sure if TRIM is support in Linux OS that I'm running. But so far read/write performance is good.

Couldn't go wrong with this SSD. Bought this over Thanksgiving 2016 for ($) a great bargain price and free shipping from Adorama. I have sped up my 4 plus years of 2012 MBP 13 inc which was previously running on HDD and I can safely say that my Mac runs like new, faster than I first bought it. The installation process went smooth after watching videos on you tube and using Carbon Copy Cloner software. You will need a USB SATA 3 cable which is not included.

I use this SSD as a bootable backup of my MacBook Pro's internal SSD, installed in an external USB-C enclosure. Fast, it was easy to install and if my past Samsung SSDs are any indication then this one too will have a long life! Price point for these size SSDs is finally at a reasonable level.

Cool, quiet, and fast. This SSD was a direct replacement for the HDD in my "Late 2012" Mac Mini. I cloned the existing drive with SuperDuper, then shutdown and followed online instructions to replace the drive. (Note, in my system, it required removal of essentially all internal components, so it may not a project for non-tech-y, "all-thumbs" or just faint of heart.)

Product works as intended, is perfectly fine, and is fast as hell, also good price for Black Friday. However, extra was a Game, a license key for a game to be more exact, that was said to arrive 3 to 7 days after purchase, well, it's been more than a month since the purchase, and license key still hasn't arrived. In short, good performance though doesn't deliver all that was advertised.

This is the absolute best solution for folks that use RAID O to stripe an external hard drive. I use 4x4tb for a grand total of 16tb of screaming raid goodness at Thunderbolt 3 speeds.

Cloning the old hard disk was easy with Samsung software. Windows boot time came down from about 5 minutes to just over 1 min. Ubuntu boots up in about 10 seconds !!!!! Got the SSD on BF sale. Same price as other major sites with no tax and free shipping. Shipping from Adorama was also fast. No complaints at all. Happily recommend it.

The only gripe I've ever heard from anyone using the Samsung 850 EVO is the (high) price. Performance - check. Reliability - check. Solid engineering - check. Price - well ... not so much. Some folks refer to the price difference between the Samsung SSDs and the competition as the "Samsung Tax". IOW Samsung knows they have a great product and prices it 10% or so above the competition. You want one? Pay the Samsung Tax. You can't go wrong with this SSD.

Switched from a 7200 RPM HDD to the Samsung 850 EVO in a 2009 MacPro 4,1. It is so much quieter and so much faster when booting up and launching apps, like FCPX and Photoshop.

Upgraded an HP Pavilion DV8 laptop with this drive and improved performance over the old HDD. Breathed new life into an aging laptop. Adorama's sale price on this SSD made it a no brainer.

I installed this SSD into my 2009 MacBook pro 17-in., and it's much faster now -- almost like getting a new computer for only the cost of the SSD. They don't make the 17-in. anymore, so this is my way of getting a few more years out of it. With El Capitan and beyond, you get TRIM support. You just have to enable it.

Upgraded from a standard hard drive. The included Samsung software made it easy to transfer my hard drive image to the new SSD, but if your laptop has only one drive bay, you will need a SATA to USB adapter cable to use the software. Performance has been great so far.

Great performance on this SSD especially on the Read. Good price to performance ratio. If you don't transfer large files often enough, this is sufficient. You don't need to buy the PRO version and save some money.

Fast storage

After purchasing the 250gb Samsung 850 EVO drive for a new Laptop, I decided to upgrade the primary system drive in my aging Mac Pro 3,1 tower. While the main drive slots do not support the full read/write speed of the drive, I purchased a PCI card that allows the drive to reach full speed and act as a boot disk. This combination gives me the full 500+ MB read/write speeds and allows me to retain my RAID setup in the four existing drive slots. After a fresh install of 10.11.3 and my usual edi...

Excellent drive for an excellent price
By JONATHAN V.
Anyone looking to upgrade an old laptop or desktop computer with a traditional hard drive in it - Samsung is my go-to OEM. I run an 840 pro in my desktop and ordered two of these 850 EVO drives - one for my laptop, one for my wife's laptop. Night-and-day difference in performance, worth every penny. Disc migration wizard was effortless to install and clone the old drive to the new one. Adorama's value and customer service cannot be beat!
V-NAND Technology and The SAMSUNG SSD 850 EVO Samsung's unique and innovative V-NAND flash memory architecture is a breakthrough in overcoming the density limitations, performance and endurance of today's conventional planar NAND architecture. VNAND is fabricated by stacking cell layers vertically over one another rather than decreasing the cells dimensions and trying to fit itself onto a fixed horizontal space resulting in higher density and better performance utilizing a smaller footprint. The 850 EVO is the advanced consumer SSD powered by V-NAND technology that maximizes everyday computing experiences with optimized performance and enhanced reliability.

Optimized performance for everyday computing experiences
Powered by Samsung's cutting-edge V-NAND technology, 850 EVO delivers top-class sequential and random read and write performance to optimize everyday computing. With improved performance thanks to TurboWrite technology the 850 EVO provides not only more than a 10% better user experience than 840 EVO but up to 1.9x faster random write speeds for the 120/250 GB models as well. In fact, the 850 EVO delivers top class sequential read (540 MB/s) and write (520 MB/s) performance in all capacities. This comes with optimized random read and write performance on all QD and improved QD1 and QD2 random performance for Client PC usage.
Reinforcement of TurboWrite Technology
In the early stages of the 840 EVO, Samsung adopted sequential write performance first. With TurboWrite, write speeds are significantly accelerated during data transfers by creating a high-performance write buffer in the SSD. If a consecutive write operation (i.e. no idle time) exceeds the size of the buffer, the transfer will exit TurboWrite and be processed at 'After TurboWrite' speeds. Once the buffer is cleared, TurboWrite performance will resume. However, the buffer size for TurboWrite is more than sufficient for everyday PC use, and you should experience accelerated speeds for most workloads.
Advanced data encryption
The 850 EVO provides the same data encryption feature as the 840 EVO does. Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology will help keep data safe at all times. It includes an AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption engine to ensure that your personal files remain secure. Being hardware-based, the encryption engine secures your data without performance degradation that you may experience with a software-based encryption. Also, 850 EVO is compliant with advanced security management solutions (TCG Opal and IEEE 1667). Magician will guide 'How to use security features'. Furthermore, you can erase or initialize data with the crypto erase service with PSID.
Efficient power management for all PC applications
Power consumption affects everyone. You actually save of up to 50% more on power than with the 840 EVO during write operations thanks to V-NAND consuming half the power of 2D planar NAND.
Plus, whether it's preserving battery life for longer cordless use or just saving on costs, power management is important. Device sleep signals the SSD to enter a low power state which is vital for ultra-books and other battery powered devices. With 850 EVO's Device Sleep at a highly efficient 2mW you get longer battery life on your notebook thanks to a controller optimized for V-NAND. With the 850 EVO you can work and play longer without having to plug in.
Guaranteed endurance
The 850 EVO delivers guaranteed endurance and reliability by doubling the Tera bytes Written(TBW) compared to the previous generation 840 EVO backed by an industry leading 5 year warranty.
With twice the endurance of a typical NAND flash SSD, the 850 EVO will keep working as long as you do. The 850 EVO guarantees a 5 year limited warranty or 75TBW for 120GB, 250GB, 150TBW for 500GB, 1TB and 300TBW for 2TB and 4TB.
Enhanced reliability with improved sustained performance
With enhanced reliability through improved sustained performance, the 850 EVO assures long-term dependable performance up to 30% longer than the 840 EVO with minimized performance degradation. This means you can use it every day when taking care of work or entertaining yourself knowing it will keep performing even with heavy daily workloads over the years.
