Questions & Answers

Shopper : A review site says this is about 7.5 ounces lighter than the canon version (F/2.8 IS version II). Has anyone shot with both who can verify if this lens is noticeably lighter?CARTER B : The VC models are both the same weight. You must be comparing a non-VC model in Nikon mount as they are lighter due to the lack of VC.
Dennis G : Is this lens made in China or Japan?
George P : Will this lens perform well in low light sports situations? Specifically grade school and high school gymnasiums at a distance of 100-200 feet.MICHAEL C : Yes it would. I love my Tamron 70-200. Its my favorite lens. Combined with late model full frame sensor cameras, this lens allows me to shoot handheld in very low light venues (indoor weddings, theaters, concerts, fashion shows, etc...) . With a f2.8 aperture and excellent VC, it has become my "go to" lens for many nighttime indoor photography events. This would be a great choice for you if the focal length is long enough for you. At 200mm its not going to get you as close a longer focal length lens but its 2.8 speed, sharpness, VC, build quality, and zoom ability may make this the most versatile zens in your bag for these kinds of events.JEFFREY N : Dear George, To answer is a bit hard. I don't know what camera you have that lens on. I use my lens with a Nikon D300. I shoot high school football and it works good for me. I love that lens. That lens works with both DX and fx camera. Hope this helpsWILLIAM F : I've used the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 Di VC USD lens to photograph college football, basketball and soccer with my D610 body. The lens acquires and tracks ficus, well, and the f/2.8 aperture is optimal for sports. Shooting from a distance of 200 feet, no 70-200 is gonna get the job done. That's why God inspired lens designers to create the 300 f/2.8, the 400 f/2.8 and teleconverters. At 100 feet, you'll be pushing the very limits of the 200mm focal length. You'll want to be shooting with an APS-C body at that distance. Use your feet and your charm to persuade officials to allow you courtside or sideline access.JENNIFER K : I use it (with good results) in ice rinks for figure skating. I prefer to be around center ice (100 feet) but it can reach the length of the ice and reasonably fill the frame with a DX camera. Overall pleased with the results and happy with the $$ saved over the equivalent Nikon lens.JORGE V : Yes because of the f/2.8, but if zoomed -in and involves action sport, you will have to increase the iso to achieve a fast enough shutter speed, otherwise the pics will be blurryRAY M : I am sure a lot depends on the camera. I shoot with a Nikon D 810 and am pleased with this lens in low light situations.DANIEL B : This has been a fantastic lens for low-light environments. I've used it for several years to photograph in dark auditoriums with shutter speeds consistently at 1/180 sec and ISO's around 200. Certainly, it depends on your available light; in my case, the stage was lit well. A flash won't help at the distances you're describing if you need to bump up the light. For example, a Nikon SB-600 would have to be set on full power at 100' from the subject, and your ISO would still be over 1000 at f/2.8 (the maximum aperture of this fantastic lens). The folks in front of you would have a sunburn on the backs of their necks after an evening at the auditorium. Seriously, though, for the money, it has been a superb lens. Images are incredibly sharp. I have not been disappointed by it in any way, shape or form. Best of luck.CHARLOTTE S : I bought it for soccer games and did not like it.

Good lens

The more I use this lens for portrait work, the more I like it. The colors are nice and at 200mm the bokeh is incredible but sometimes the focus isn't as accurate as I would like as it tends to back focus sometimes and is the autofocus lens a little on the slow side. Overall good lens though and at a decent price.

Overall great lens!

I love this lens. I read lots and lots of reviews on different brands to buy a 70 200 mm. And I decided on the Tamron because not only was it nearly 1000$ cheaper than a canon brand, but the reviews all saod it was so close in comparison, that the 1000$ extra wasn't reasonable. I've only had the lens about a month, but I am in love with quality!!! Definetly a game changer! The only issue is, it is very heavy. Sometimes hard to handle for very long. I may end up investing in a tripod for this one. Still manageable though

Quickly becoming my favorite lens!

When compared to the Canon 70-200, the Tamron does a really great job for the price. It is a little noisy, but that isn't a factor how I shoot. It's tremendously sharp and fast and the f2.8 creates beautiful bokeh. I'd recommend this lens to anyone.

Great Buy

I purchased this lens at a great price, and within a week the price dropped another ($) Adorama had a ($) in store credit within 48hrs (my choice for the credit). the lens is spectacular. Used it twice now as well as allowed a friend to use to capture a little league Championship. Truly a superb investment....

Great lens!!!!

I tried this lens for a dance recital and loved the quality of the pictures. With the low light, the f2.8 was extremely helpful. I have a crop sensor, so the zoom was more and wonderful! I talked to many people about this lens and the difference with Nikon, Sigma and Tamron, but the Tamron lens won by far. I bought this lens right before Christmas and received a great rebate. The staff at Adorama helped me find the best quality for my price range. Definitely a must lens, especially if you love shooting in lower light, or you love shooting animals. I loved taking it to the zoo for a trial and was very pleased with the quality of the pictures!

Sharp and fast

I love and use mostly prime lenses. So when I try this zoom lens I was shock to find out how sharp it was and felt in love. Just photographed a full session with this lens and my images came out with a beautiful and creamy bokeh. I'm in love!

Amazing for the price

When compared to the Nikon 70-200, the Tamron does a really good job for the price. It is a little noisy, but for non-professionals, that should not be a factor. I use this lens with the Nikon D500... provides a good range and performs very well in low-light situations.

Love so many things about this lens. The weather resistant feature and the internal zoom make it great to use in bad weather (I still use a sleeve to protect it). The 2.8 is throughout the lens range! love.

Sharp, fast AF and great photos

After watching a few videos of good photographers comparing this lens with Nikon, decided on this Tamron. Good build, works well and sharp. Tested it at a horse jumping event, fast auto focus and accurate. Great sharpness at f/5.6 ~ f/6.3 zoomed in to 150mm, as I was a good 20 to 30 yards away from the subjects at times. Very good center sharpness and corners look good too. Haven't pushed it to f/2.8 and portraits yet, but quite happy with the performance so far after 1,100 shots. Great Adorama service and return policy makes it easy to go for this type of lens.

Too good to be true

I previously had the older tamron 70-200 non vc. I always struggled at focusing on daylight and pictures always came out blurry if i was shooting anything slower than 250th/sec. Also very noisy. Now I shoot in near in lowlight at 1/8 a second at 200mm and all pictures come out tack sharp. Focus is super fast and silent. Love this lens. Glad i bought it.

Great lens

The first one they sent wasn't sharp at all I thought I made a grave mistake not going with Nikon. I had a pro shoot the lens and said it was more than a fine focusing issue and to send it back. New one came and it shoots flawlessly. I could read the tail letters off a plane in the sky zooming in on camera preview. Nice lens and way less expensive.

Excellent competitor/ canon70-200 IS II

By Marek K.

I shoot mostly weddings and portraiture, and I have a bad habit of renting the best lenses in each class. My first venture into a 70-200 was with the NON IS f/4 version that a friend owns. It's excellent, and after using it at a wedding, I decided I could not shoot another without this type of zoom. I then began renting the canon 70-200 2.8 IS II which is just plain amazing..I never need to stop it down and just leave it at f2.8, and wide open it's super sharp and renders everything beautiful...

Everything that i had hoped it would be!

By MICHAEL C.

I always dreamed of owning a Nikon 70-200 2.8, but the high cost kept me from making the purchase. After reading the reviews on the Tamron version of this lens, I decided to take a chance on it. I was not disappointed. This is a solid professional grade lens. It's very sharp at all focal lengths and apertures. The focus is fast and the build is solid. No lens creep. Internal zoom. The included lens hood is easy to attach and remove. I am very pleased in my purchase and I would definit...

It features a fast f/2.8 wide aperture throughout the zoom range. This model delivers leading-edge image quality in a compact lens that's designed for both FX full-frame Nikon DSLRs and DX APS sensor Nikon cameras, has a large aperture that is consistent throughout the zoom range, and Vibration Compensation, which reduces camera shake in low light. What you should know about this lens:
