I bought this camera refurbished a few months ago in order to get back into photography, and to have a lightweight compact full frame mirrorless camera with a viewfinder that is perfect for travel. I finally found it. The camera looked brand new when it arrived, which was nice. I used to own the Canon RP many years ago, so this camera was definitely familiar in how it felt in my hand. Where this camera excels however is that the sensor performs way better, especially for high dynamic range and low light shooting. This camera also has much faster autofocus in tricky lighting situations and the ability to do more things that involve computational photography, like stitching panoramas in camera. The camera body has the same compromises as the RP model, but for this price point, good luck finding a better value for the money. I've already taken thousands of photos with it and it's run flawlessly. Overall, I would highly recommend.

Great Value. Perfect for travel.

This is a huge step up from the 50d I used before. Lighter, more features, what's not to love? I've only used this for about 1,500 photos on a vacation.  Easy to use, awesome photos.

Love, love, love!

The camera is really good, great specs and really good image quality if you have a good lens on the camera. The RF24-50mm lens, while light and compact, is not a good lens. That's the reason for the minus one star for this kit. The body alone is worth 5 stars. Raw images require an enormous amount of correction that it's not even worth shooting in raw. The in-camera correction of the JPEGs is okay. So, as a kit, this system is best only for images you plan to upload to a web site. Put a better lens on this camera and it's as good as the R6 Mark II but without IBIS. For me, the RF24-50mm sits in a drawer and I have the RF24-105mm f4L on the R8 for really great images both in JPEG and RAW.

At the price I paid, there is not a competing camera available.  Many high-end abilities at a low-end price.  I've bought multiple refurbished lenses and camera from Canon direct and never had an issue.

The bang for the buck is fantastic.

Had it for a month and it continues to amaze me with its features. My only complaint is the LP-E17 battery.

Excellent product & deal!

Body is very plasticy, but overall solid. The LCD hinge and lock seems to lack a snappiness to it that other Canon bodies have. No real complaints, but would have liked a better F&F

Solid overall

Full frame and this small camera does it all. Great photos, fast and smart auto-focus, lightweight.

But please Canon, give us an R8 mkII with an R6 sized battery. You must turn on airplane mode or it will drain, even when switched off. I woke up one day thinking I was fully charged ready to take pics for a day of skiing. Nope, dead. During the night, it was searching for GPS or something, even when switched off. Always carry a second battery. It also drains the battery very quickly while transferring over wifi to my phone. Fix this and it would be perfect for me.

Everything but the battery life

This review is more about Canon the company not the camera itself. I found the same camera brand new with a lens for less than this camera body only so I returned the unopened camera to canon.To start that process is way more difficult than necessary, in this day and time. You have to call, sit on hold and get an RMA, they are very specific on how it needs to be labeled and shipped. I sent it ups 2nd day and it was received on Jan 2nd. On Jan 9th I received an email stating if they didnt receive the camera within 48 hours that the return would be canceled. Of course Im frustrated because I know they have had the camera for 7 days at the time of the email I received. When I call in to see what was the issue on their end, I provided the order number and the rma number. They hadn't processed the return still so they couldn't find the package and asked for the tracking number that they would have in their system if they hadn't processed the item because I never provided it to them. I no longer had the tracking number because I had received confirmation that the package had safely arrived 8 days earlier. So back to the UPS store I went to get the tracking number so they could put in a request at the warehouse to locate and process the package. That was 4 days ago and Ive heard nothing sense. Bottom line there overall frustration of the return process and the fact that Im still waiting for my $1300 credit back to my card 19 days after I initiated the return is enough to make me never purchase from their website again. They just dont have their act together at all and dont seem too concerned for making their customer happy. I wouldn't have written a review but they sent me an email asking me what I thought of my product and service. I decided that since I still have an unresolved issue I should probably tell my story so someone else doesn't go through the same thing I have. If I could give them a -5 I would. In fact this whole thing has me considering returning the Canon camera I bought elsewhere and switching to another brand so I won't have to deal with this in the future when I am adding on to my system .

Terrible Customer Service

Camera quality is very good.  I really like the small tri-pod and remote.  Battery life is as expected so I bought extras to start, but so far no issues.  It will be interesting to see how it does in the summer desert heat.  The only difficult issues are trying to attach the microphone cover (but finally got it in place, but I like that it is secure now), and removing the hot shoe cover.

Overall a great kit

After using the RP for 80,000 shots, I upgraded to the R8 which improved most of the complaints I had with the RP without making the camera heavier.  Accepting the same accessories is a plus but, I admit, the battery could be better.

Natural upgrade to my RP

Excellent value - the kit lens is fine for jpeg shooting since the camera automatically corrects for CA and vignetting, and the camera handles beautifully. It almost feels "too light" but is solid. Battery life isn't the best but charges with >22W USB-C, which I'm sure you have lying around somewhere.

This order was handled on Monday and I just got it on Wednesday, Seattle. The camera seems great. I just have the camera body and lens registered on Canon's official website. Very nice purchasing experience! Now I shall explore my new toy and hope I can enjoy photoing.

Extremely happy with the video the camera produces. Does the camera overheat? Yes but only in 4k 60 from my experience with it. My workflow allows me to operate it without it shutting down. Most of my shooting is 4k24 and I'll switch to 4k60 on the shots that I need. If your planning on only shooting 4k60 this camera is not for you. Shooting at only 4k60 you'll get about 4 to 5 3 min clips before your at the first red overheating bar, once it hits the third red bar it shuts down. Video quality looks great tho. Very happy with the purchase. Was a little skeptical about buying refurbished but it came in excellent condition. No scuffs or scratches.

Canon R8 video is amazing!

I understand this is supposed to be a better camera. It is lighter, and better electronics. But I guess I was just getting used to my old camera. NOW, a whole new learning curve. Why do they change all of the methods for getting to the same goal. Just to keep people busy I guess.

I still like my 5D MKII better, but they are not the same

Perfect beginner set!

As a Professional Sports Still Photographer this is my first mirror-less Canon Camera, i am a longtime DSLR Shooter, & CPS Member, and hope to work the R8 into shooting fast moving Sports! For now i have only taken
personnel photos on hikes, it does live up to auto focus and low light metering for low light woods shooting! I do like the size & weight for hiking!

I sold all of my Nikon gear and purchased this camera setup because my husband shoots with a canon mirrorless camera. I'm extremely happy with my purchase.  It's light and very affordable. Canon is very user friendly. The kit lens is just that.  A kit lens. Nothing impressive, but then I didn't expect it to be.  I bought this kit for the the mic and mini tripod.  It's fun to use.

Baught my R8 through amazon along with a rf 24-240mm lense.  Fun and easy camera to use. Between on line videos and instruction manual photography is fun. Excellent photos and videos

Great entry level full frame, mirrorless camera.

I love the camera, but it overheats. I cannot do many sessions outside when it's hot because of this. I've done a little research and this seems to be a common problem.

Bought this camera for a film project. It's my first "professional" camera (meaning, the first time I spent more than a hundred bucks!). So far, it has performed exceptionally. It is an excellent camera at a great price. I did a ton of research before I bought this camera, about the sort of features and specs I should look for in a camera, and this camera had almost everything I could have asked for. Full frame sensor, 4k UHD, good dynamic range, good bit depth, good chroma sampling. The only thing it doesn't have (that I wanted) was sensor-shift stabilization - it has digital stabilization. The settings menu is a bit overwhelming, but I'm sure I'll get used to it with time and practice. Couldn't be happier. Would definitely recommend to others.

excellent camera at a great price

Long time ago I had Canon 5D Mark II. I didn't like the interface. Together with Canon 24-105 L lens it was quite heavy to use while traveling. In 2018 I traded Canon 5D for Leica CL. This time around I decided to get EOS R8 just for fun. And I was surprised with the easy control rings and its interface. And its also very light with the additional grip, two batteries, and RF 24-105 lens. I opted not to purchase 24-105 RF L lens. I also purchased RF 16 mm lens.
