Excellent flash at an excellent price

I use this flash for portrait and nature photography, and I've got excellent results!. Power and recycle time are very good, works awesome with 2000mAh NiMh batteries. The difference in price with 580EX is reasonable, so if you don't need the extras (strobe, more power, weatherproof) buy this one. I'm planning to upgrade in the future and this can work as a wireless slave (I think that's Canon's plan). Excellent product

    A Good Value Over EXII

The casual and hobbyist user may find the retired 430EX a better value over the incrementally updated EX-II. Adorama's battery and diffuser bundle sweeten the pot as very serviceable. The 9-point AF feature matches well with Canon's 7-9 point E-TTL cameras. However, beware that it does NOT team up as a totally brainless accessory in auto modes. Indoor results are very consistent, but was surprised at how testy it can be to set up outdoor fill flash.Other manual modes require pilot training with a menu system that is not fully intuitive. Keep the manual handy until you have the road map down. The select buttons can be unresponsive ... a little too much recess. It can read focal length (14mm-105mm) from my Tamron lenses. The flash head focal length zoom feature is automatic only when the flash head is horizontal. When set for a bounce, one must manually select focal length as desired. This flash has a built-in wide angle diffuser that also enables its 14mm feature.Bottom line. At [$] street, the 430EX is probably the best pick for a Rebel camera and can expand as a remote under a 580. HOWEVER, since it is NOT a 100% 'fuss-free' option in auto modes, a cost concious casual shooter may find well reviewed Phoenix and Nissin options more soothing without giving up too much in power and features. Congress isn't offering me a bailout and I prefer to fuss with a flash for a lot less moola.

I Am So Glad I Finally Bought This

This is an excellent product that makes your photos so much better than with just the built-in flash. I did not consider price in my rating which I feel is too high. I am just a casual user and don't need all the extra bells and whistles that come with this product. I just want to light my subject well. As a result, I waited over 2 years to plunk down the money, using only the built-in flash in the meantime. After the first picture using this flash, I realized I had wasted 2 years and took countless poor photos as a result. Besides, if I decide to get more serious, this flash has great features that will be very useful. And if you're in my shoes but are afraid all the extra features might make it too complicated, don't worry. Using it is as simple as insert batteries, attach to shoe mount, turn power "ON", shoot. I love it.

    Satisfied

It's a great flash if you can't afford the 580 or the 430II. The flash doesn't make the photo, but it definitely provides a useful tool in the arsenal.

    Canon Speedlite 430EX TTL

Just great. I wanted a flash that would enable me to take the pictures I wanted in a way I wanted rather than have a prescriptive flash of what a device thought I wanted! I enjoy taking close up shots - for instance a cicadia on a shrub at night. I could hear it but wanted a picture that looked natural but with sufficient light to illuminate.

Works as it is supposed to do

Did a lot of research before I deciding on this one. Since I'm not planning to use multiple flashes I didn't really need it to be a Master as the 580ex. So why the 430EX and not the 430EX II? I mostly use the flash for indoor shooting and don't really need the faster recharging time. As a beginner photographer, the recharge time is fast enough for me.

    Great flash

Great flash, paired with a diffuser this thing can do wonders. It's an authentic Canon product, too -- making it that much better. You can go from 1/1 to 1/64 (from my experience -- in manual mode)power and 1/1 produces a lot of light. It has it's own battery source (uses Double A's) so it's not sucking power from your camera battery.

I liked this flash so much that I bought one for my son for Christmas. We both use the Canon Power Shot S5-IS and this has proven to be the ideal accessary.

    Right Light

I own a cabinet/woodworking business and needed something better than the pop-up flash on my Xsi to record our jobs. The bounce flash is MUCH more natural looking. It cycles very fast(not that my subjects move around a lot). Price was great. I would gladly reccommend this unit.

    Love it!

I use this flash anytime I want to make sure my picture has good light. The pop-up flash on my camera doesn't cut it many times. If the batteries are well charged, it has a fast recycling time. It works well as a main flash but also as a slave (I use the wireless transmitter.) I recommend it to anyone wanting some good light but might not necessarily have the budget for a higher-end flash.

    Good beginner flash

I use it mainly for portraits, as a fill-in, for night time indoor picture taking where i use the bounce for a more natural tone to pictures etc. I wouldn't recommend it for fast action photography since the recycling is not that fast. Also since the flash reach is kind of short, it doesn't do that well when there is a good distance between the camera and the subject. But i was aware of these limitations before even i got the flash. So i love it for the whatever i use it for! Using the flash by light bounce, made a huge difference to my portraits!!...i love it for that! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is sick and tired of the built in flash and is on a "LIMITED BUDGET". Even if you plan to get the a more advanced flash later, this could well be used as a secondary flash, which is what i am planing to do.

    By Enrique

I just got from Adorama my second unit, now I use one for key light and the second for fill light with a pair of softbox and the canon Transmitter ST-E2 and work great with my portraits

This exciting addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420Ex, the new 430Ex can now be set into manual flash mode (full power 1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Improvements in its circuitry make recycle time 40% faster, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable slave unit.

The Canon Speedlite 430Ex flash unit replaces the Speedlite 420Ex flash model asthe one of the most functional and powerful flashes in its class. The maximum guide number has been increased to 43/141 (ISO 100, in meters/feet), and the 430Ex flash becomes even more versatile with the addition of a built-in wide panel, which increases the minimum focal length coverage from the previous 24mm limit to 14mm.

The Speedlite 430Ex flash works equally well with film or digital cameras. Additionally, like its big brother, the Speedlite 580Ex flash, the Speedlite 430Ex flash unit includes features that digital photographers will find especially useful. The Speedlite 430Ex flash is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II (Evaluative Through The Lens) auto exposure technology.

E-TTL II technology analyzes relevant information like subject distance to modify flash power automatically, resulting in more accurate flash exposure, even when shooting subjects of different sizes, reflectance or high contrast. Advanced technology automatically adjusts the flash coverage to help compensate for differences in focal length as well as the variable size of CMOS sensors on digital cameras. The new Speedlite also analyzes flash duration & battery charge levels to adjust white balance dynamically for stable & accurate color from shot to shot.

The new Speedlite 430Ex flash unit includes other upgrades, such as a full-powerrecycle time that is approximately 40 percent shorter than its predecessor at just 2 seconds with NiMH rechargeable AA batteries. A rear LCD & intuitivelyplaced controls make other new features more accessible, such as adjusting manual flash exposure from full power to 1/64 in whole stop increments, & enabling the second curtain sync function. 6 custom functions are also now available, as well as a flash head that is more maneuverable & capable of moreangles for bouncing flash illumination than its predecessor.

The Speedlite 430Ex flash also incorporates the high end features that make it an essential accessory, such as a 24-105mm auto zoom, locking hot shoe bracket, & the ability to be used as a slave flash in an E-TTL or E-TTL II wireless flash configuration. High speed sync & FE lock are also available, as well as a save energy (SE) function, a versatile feature set that delivers outstanding value. With all of it features & versatility, Speedlite 430Ex flash becomes the next logical step in the EOS system.

Canon Speedlite 430EX TTL-Shoe Mount Flash Features

    • Significantly greater user control via new LCD panel on rear of flash
    • Wide-angle pull-down panel covers 14mm lens (on a full-frame camera)
    • Slightly higher max. guide number at 105mm setting (GN 141-feet, at ISO 100)
    • Auto conversion of flash zoom coverage with compatible digital SLRs
    • White balance info communicated instantly to compatible digital SLRs
    • Bounce upward to 90°; swivel right (to 90°) and left (to 180°)
    • 14% lighter and approx. 25% smaller in overall volume than top-of-the-line 580EX
    • Six flash custom functions built into the 430EX (set on rear LCD panel)
