Questions & Answers

Daryll P : will this lens fit a nikon f100 ?JOHN C : yes, it should fit most Nikon SLR bodies.FREDERICK H : Yup!THEBLOC R : YesWAYNE H : Yes it will. The lens comes equipped with a focus confirmation and the ability to meter accurately.
Marco R : Is this the "N" version, which has the focusing ring made of metal and not of rubber ? Also, does it come with the original box and the accessories (hood, close-up lens, caps, etc.) ? ThanksJOHN H : The focusing ring is metal and it has a close up lens and lens caps. My lens does not have a hood. I have the original box but there are no other accessories.MARTIN F : Not up-to-date on this wonderful lens. Sorry.SHARON M : Yes it is. Never used the close-up lens but will at some point. It is an awesome lens. I use it with an adapter on my Fuji cameras.Eric P : I bought one of these lenses newtwo years ago. It is the "N" version with metal focus ring, and it came in its original box with the accessories you asked about. I like it a lot and use it all the time. I hope that helps.BRUCE B : It appears to be the "N" version current F mount 40mm f2 CV Ultron, No plastics at all. Neatly packaged in black box. Metal focus and aperture rings. Comes with metal cove hood and close up lens option. One of the smoothest, best built lenses I've used besides a CV Color Skopar 28mm with same qualities. Stick them on a MFT Metabones booster or Micro Four Thirds adapter and you have the whole world in a nutshell (35mm format equivs: 40mm, 56mm and 80mm). I like it better on a mirrorless Olympus E-M1 1 than any Nikon DSLR because of focusing tool options, live view finder and compact design.ROBERT P : focus ring is metal. Has hood which is a cute little gizmo. No close up lens as I recall. Has lens caps. I don't remember the box. I do not recommend this lens as it does not produce sharp images.MATTHEW M : Metal focus ring, and it came with all of the accessories.RYAN N : Yes to all your questions. Yes metal focusing ring Yes manufacturers packaging Yes hood, close up lens, lens cap, rear cap included. Very sharp compact lens. Lives on my D800 85% of the time. If you are looking for a sharp compact wider manual-focus normal lens I do not think you will be disappointed.
ALEXANDER K : does it have a manufacturer warranty?EDWARD S : Yes.BRUCE B : I can't recall but I would have left it with the original packaging and after checking again, didn't find any warranty. Still, a very well made lens with magnificent qualities.ROBERT P : I don't know.PAUL M. F : I remember a warranty registration card, but I did not fill it out. Probably the standard one year coverage. I purchased this lens 3 or more years ago. I have found that the quality of the build, crispness of focus, the ABSENCE of chromatic aberration, and the low light performance in a pocket-able full frame package makes a place for this jem in any bag I travel with. If you're worried, I'd buy the replacement insurance rather than the extended warranty. I did.DAVID K : Don't remember....but love the lens.....sharp lightweight fastSHARON M : I actually don't know. Bought mine several years ago. I imagine it did come with one. Never had a problem with it though.MARTIN F : I assume it does. You should ask Adorama. (Great lens.)

A true gem

I learned on manual film cameras, so this was a no brainer. This is a fantastic normal, compact lens. I believe in less is more. Carrying this around all day is a breeze. It is very sharp, but I don't obsess over sharpness. If you're an old schooler like me, get it! You'll have fun with it.

Just right.

I bought this lens because its focal length allows for photos that look very "natural" as compared with a 35mm lens, and that seem to breathe a little better those from a 50mm. That's a big generalization based on how I work, but the lens is perfect for me. It's small, lightweight, fast enough and plenty sharp.

Really Want to Like

I will update my review as soon as I receive my second copy of this lens, but for now I will speak towards the one I got. The lens is well made and feels great. It is also extremely small! Which was one reason I picked it up. The lens is not as good as comparable primes wide open, but, that's not a deal breaker. My intention for this lens is mainly scapes, and I typically shoot in broad daylight. I am exchanging this lens for another because it is not sharp around infinity! At all! I could not get objects on the horizon in focus. Objects 30, 40ft away are sharper when focusing around 20ft rather than trying to get nail the subject 30/40ft away. I compared results with my nikon 24/70 ii, night and day difference. I could not find anything wrong with this lens otherwise and got great, sharp results focusing on anything between the minimum and 20ft. Like I said, I really want to like this lens!

What a winner!

This ultra-sharp lens brings its attributes to Nikon film and digital, particularly full-frame SLR's alike. I have mounted it on a vintage but pristine Nikon FG and it makes an incredibly sweet and petite package for walkabouts. It's superb clarity and color are of great benefit on the Nikon D700 full frame digital body. The operation is so smooth and silky it is very satisfying to use and makes one happy that it is a manual focus lens. It focuses in a snappy fashion when using the split image on a film camera or the focus indicator on a digital body. The lens shade is wonderful, not only because it is effective, but because it goes a long way to reduce the chance of fingers straying on to the glass. It is designed to function with a filter. I recommend a clear glass filter like the Tiffen (dirt cheap at Adorama) so the color quality of the lens is completely unaltered. Last but not least, the included close-up lens is really clever in the way it mounts into the lens shade and does a great job, too! Get one and enjoy!

Very sharp / Amazing color contrast!

Nail the focus and your images pop! Great buy if you don't mind focusing with the buttery soft manual focus ring.

Not worth it

Used for landscape and I found a 40 year old manual Nikon lens to be sharper. Can't recommend this product.

Excellent all-round lens

Excellent walking around lens. Fast at f2.0. The 40mm focal length is a bit different but hits a nice sweet spot between 35 and 50. Optically excellent. Works great with digital and film. The lens cap is a peculiar size if it gets lost. Excellent value for money.

Not worth it

I would use this as a walk around lens, landscape work. Didn't work to well: not as sharp as even 40 year old Nikon Lenses. Aperture control was a nice feature but this did not offset the fact that the lens simply was not sharp. Would not recommend it to anyone - buy a genuine lens for your camera.

Big Performance in a Small package

The 40mm Ultron is a great companion. I keep on my D700 when I'm shooting for myself. It's small enough to use on the street . . . people and architecture look great. It's very sharp at medium apertures and is pleasant wide open. The close-up lens is surprising useful!

second chance - fantastic

OK, after buying and loving the 90mm and 20mm CV lenses, I repurchased the 40mm - maybe I just got a bad copy ... or maybe I didn't give it enough time. The second time around, it's been fantastic. I put it on my D800 and it does the job - sharp clean pictures, edge to edge. Tough, lightweight. I just returned from five weeks of landscape shooting; the 40mm took 80% of the photos. It lives on my D800; great for landscapes, great for indoor/low light. I'm not a fan of "pancake" lenses, but I am a fan of this one.

Great Lens. Sharp

Very small lens that delivers amazingly sharp results on the Nikon D800. I can count the hairs on each eyebrow AND can see every spot where the eyebrow has been plucked!

Just right!

This crisp little lens has quickly become my "walk around" favorite. It is in the "goldilocks" zone, wide enough but not too wide on a full frame DSLR, still in normal range for DX format.

Goldilocks Special...just right

A pleasure to use, SHARP, and easy to carry in a pocket. Ideal Goldilocks prime... not too short, not too long...just right for full frame. Still in the normal range for DX.

The perfect walk around lens

This cute little manual lens is a real pleasure to use. Regarding its output, size and weight, this is just the perfect walk around lens. It's brighter, sharper and way lighter than the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED. Just move a few steps, concentrate on composition and you won't need the "Nikon's best mid-range zoom" anymore... and your back will thank you for that ! The Ultron is very sharp @ f/2 and dead sharp from f/4. Distortions and vignetting are no problem here. Premium build quality. I just love it !

A bit disappointed :(

I bought this for my Nikon D700. It fit well, was made well, focused easily (snapped in). Worked well with my exposure wheel. But I returned it. It was so short that I had problems finding the focusing ring. Although it seemed to focus quickly, the focus appeared to be off. I have several MF Nikkors and they all seemed to focus more precisely. The lens was a little too contrasty for my tastes, and the bokeh a bit too harsh. I like the focal length and wanted to love this lens, but it just wasn't to be. Might work for someone else.

Very small lens that delivers amazingly sharp results on the Nikon D800. I can count the hairs on each eyebrow AND can see every spot where the eyebrow has been plucked!

  • Lets you control the F stop from the camera (set the aperture ring to f/22)

What's in the box:

  • Dome Hood
  • Close-Up Lens
