As a replacemnt for earlier models, it provides some much appreciated upgrades in several areas. And, in retrospect, since my equipment needs are ONLY for stills, I don't have to burden myself w/ the movie mode of the 5D Mk II, 7D, or 60D. One other nice feature is that it us more closely aligned w/ previous models than the 60D, so accessories like the Battery Grip that fit the 30D & 40D are compatible w/ this body. The 60D uses a new style Grip attachment. Finally, the 50D is a magnesium frame, so IF you're using the camera in a serious way, that may also be a factor.

Camera stopped working within a week of using it in Panama. told was from corrosion and was not covered by warranty. Camera never got wet and feel must have come with some defect. Canon refused to help as did Adorama. Finally was allowed to purchase refurbished camera at reduced cost. New camera works fine but still upset neither Canon or Adorama stood behind the product.

I bought this as an inexpensive upgrade from my Rebel. I thought about buying the 60D or the 7D, but decided to buy this one since it is much cheaper compared to either one of those, and it has a more high end feel compared the plastic body of the 60D. I was not dissapointed. Picture quality is very good compared to the Rebel, especially in low light situations such as indoors. Very pleased with my purchase. The only negative for me was that this camera only takes Compact Flash cards, which are expensive compared to the SD cards (which I already had plenty of from the Rebel)

This camera is very fun and easy to use. Fits my hands better than the Rebel series does. I also own a Canon 7D and like the 50D equally. The 15M vs 18M is a non issue.

This camera is perfect for taking nature photos -We had bought this camera and loved it so much we now have two... It is wonderful to take pictures of birds flying, etc. and listen to the zip of the shutter......with this camera you do not miss any of the action... We travel quite a bit filming birds, bear, elk and nature--- I would recommend this camera any day of the week... We have always had Canon and love all the improvements. thank you.

I recently purchased this Camera as an upgrade from my Canon Rebel Xti. I've shot over 800 frames
and I'm blown away by the performance of this camera. The 6.5 frames per second is awesome. I do alot of wildlife photography and it really helps catching the action. The high iso is fantastic with very low noise. The shutter is pretty quiet and the 3" lcd screen is a pleasure to view. All in all a fantastic camera and you can't beat the price. I want another one.

If you shoot a lot indooors, look elsewhere. Poor high iso performer, but fantastic in every other way. Unfortunately, a lot of my shooting is inside.

I use this body mainly to shoot figure skating, and I have been so happy with it! I upgraded from a 20D. I often have to deal with poor lighting when I shoot small competitions in local rinks, and this camera has made such a difference. I can shoot up to ISO 2000 without much loss in quality. Sure, the 1D Mark III (or the new IV) would be even better, but since I'm not a full-time pro, this is the one that fit into my budget.

This is my first DSLR and I haven't had it that long but I wanted something that I could use like my 35mm film cameras and this looks like it's going to fit the bill - and then some. Probably more bells and whistles than I'll really need. The camera has a nice comfortable feel to it and the controls are conveiently placed. Image quality is great, even with the 18-135mm kit lens.
So far - no complaints. It's a joy to use.

I have TWO of these bodies, they are used for sports(because of the high Frames per second)and large lcd (3 inch)makes it easy to view. Also great indoors with the right lenses the ISO can get bumped up high with NO NOISE

I have recently switched brands, and this is my first Canon camera. So far, I really like it. Very fast AF, and the controls are easy to use, once I knew which dial was for which function. Camera has a little noise on higher ISO, but all in all, very happy with the purchase.

I bought the 50d a couple of months ago(an upgrade
from my Rebel XT)and I'm glad that I did. I mainly do landscape and wildlife photography and have found the 50D to perform very well. The images are first rate(as long as I do my part)and the colors really pop. The burst rate is good when photographing flying birds or running animals
but the camera shutter is rather loud. In the live view mode, it is virtually silent, but I don't use this very much when photographing wild-
life.
The controls are easy to use(pretty much the same
as on the XT)and when once learned, are quite ad-
vantageous to have. Just read the manual that comes with the camera-it really does help. I would also recomend getting a field manual specifically for the 50D.
While some people think that this camera is a bit large or heavy, I have not found this to be the case. While it is a little larger and heavier than my XT, I have not found it to be a hinderence to me whatsoever.
Most of my lenses are either Canon ef or ef-s lenses. It is has been said that you need high end glass to take advantage of the 50D's capabilities-I'm really not sure if that is the case. Maybe I'll have to invest in some L series glass.
Overall, I think that the 50D is a great camera for anyone who wants to take great pictures of anything, anywhere, anytime.

Overall all a great upgrade from my Canon 20D. I'd have to say that I'm pleased with the performance for the price. Obviously, it's high iso noise performance is not as good as the 5d mark II, but it's much better than the 20D in every respect.
Good lenses and technique are a must to get the most out of this camera!

I purchased this camera as a demo since I am cheap. The camera is was in excellent condistion. I did not notice one ding or scratch. I save a couple of hundred bucks and used that money to buy a remote control, batteries and compact flash.

I would recommend this camera to any who enjoys taking photos. It is an excellent upgrade to my old Rebel XT. The difference in the picture quality is amazing. Much cleaner, sharper images.

The only real down side, if you want to call it one, is the files are huge in RAW and thus purchased an external hard drive to accomodate the files.

I am very pleased with this camera thus far.

I like using this camera but it does get heavy after awhile. The pictures are worth the extra weight.
Nice colorful pictures with a lot of detail. Pictures sometimes are not as sharp as wished but I'm working on settings to get them that way.
Would buy this camera again.
The kit is very good quality. The sling bag is very handy and is easy to load and take.

My wife and I each upgraded from the Canon 20D to the 50D. We shoot a lot of motorcycle racing events and needed higher pixel counts so as to be able to crop more aggressively. The 50D has met out expectations. We like the brighter LCD which allows for better viewing in sunlight. I have read other reviews and some indicated more noise. We have not had this problem.

I'm 43 years old and have always wanted to get into photography... well I just wanted better pics than the old 110mm camera and my 3.2mp point-n-shoot are capable of. I just purchased the Canon 50D and was able to take some fantastic pics right out of the box using the Auto features of the camera. I read the Canon manual, but I'm taking a class through my local camera shop (Silvio's Photoworks in Torrance, Ca.) to learn more about the "Why & How-to" features on my new Digital SLR camera. This is going to be fantastic!

To date I've owned a Canon Rebel XT, an XTI, older D60, & 1D, a 30D, a 40D, and 2 different 5D Cameras. I sold them all EXCEPT for my 50D.

After owning my 50D for nearly 6 months, I find this camera is a MAJOR improvement over previous models in Canon's 1.6 frame family. The 50D is fast, easy to use, has a more complete menu, and offers the lowest Noise of any other Canon I've used. I cannot recommend this camera any higher than; it's a 10 outta 10, it's 5 stars, it's the cream of the crop.... SO FAR.

I recommend that if you've been waiting to get a GREAT DSLR, the time has come to jump into this market. Or, if you are looking for an upgrade, the 50D is a great camera to move into.

Or, simply buy this camera because, it's the best DSLR (in it's class), on the market. Period.

This my third DSLR (XTi, XSi, 50D). If you're having problems with yours, then you probably have a bad copy. Mine is tack sharp, low noise and faithfully reproduces whatever I throw at it.

I use this camera for everything from portraits to wildlife and landscapes. Easy to use weight is a little heavy for my hiking trips but well worth the payoff. Especially like the fast fps.

There are excellent write ups already on the internet. I replaced a Rebel XT with this camera and the difference is tremendous! Larger body which is much more comfortable to hold and better controls. Very intuitive to use. I particularly like the LCD panel compared to my other camera. Much more detail with the larger screen. My only complaint is file size. Not sure 15MB photo files are much better than 10-12 MB. While there is a difference between the rebel and 50d, I am not so sure about the difference between a 40 and 50d. For the size of files, I almost went with the full format camera, but the cost delta was the deal breaker. I am satisfied with this camera and plan to use a few years to develop my photography skills. Then I may upgrade to the full format camera.

Could not understand how much noise this camera produces at high ISO settings, even with noise reduction on. My 40D and 1D Mark II out performes this camera hands down! The only good thing about it is high res LCD. Don't waste your money on this one! Go for the 5D or the 40D!

Documenting gypsies around Bulgaria the 50D with the 18-200 was the perfect choice. Its really fast and when working the lens composing is fast. I have a spare battery (the best) and a 16 GB card. But in low light this camera really needs a good lens. I use the 50mm 1.4 alot and It gets the job done.
I like that the camera is big and heavy. That depends on taste I guess.
For actionshooting this camera is fast.
This is my first semi-pro camera and It made it more easy for me to get started and learn the basics. The flash is okay but good idea always to have a piece of paper in the pocket, or in other situations I just deflect the light with my hand (crude technique but It works).
I dont see any need for a batterygrip for this camera. A grip will make It too heavy and theres plenty of shooting in the top battery.
I did a few large prints as well and I have decided to focus on buying good lenses instead of investing in the 5D Mark II.
I recommend the 50D to anyone who are serious about getting into photography.
I dont understand why the 5D comes without flash. In situations with little time the flash on the 50D really comes in handy.

I was a little worried about the noise after reading quite a few reviews. After using it, I found that I'm getting great results as high ISO 2000 and ISO 3200. The ISOs goes even higher and it's nice to have the ability when you really need a picture.

RAW files are quite large at around 20mb, but that's to be expected at 15Mp resolution.

I did notice that this camera needs a good lens to get the most from it. Some lens that worked well with my 40D are not able to keep up, so I'll be investing in some L lens in the very near future.

The controls are well laid out and the body is very robust. If you like the 40D, it's the same basic setup...

I have be using this camera just about everyday for the past month and have not experienced the Er99 that folks were talking about shortly after it's release, actually I have experienced no bugs at all.

Overall I have been very happy with this camera and glad I bought it.

I previously had the 20D this a real improvement faster, better colors, big LCD for checking the images and a rugged feel.I have used it on 2 weddings now and it has provided excellent images especially with the higher ISO.Very happy.

Love this camera! Frame rate and AF speed and accuracy are top qualities for me. I take a lot of sports photos, especially college football and soccer. The high ISO capabilities have helped me get shots in poorly lighted stadiums that in the past I just could not have gotten with my other body(40D). 100% satisfied with this purchase.

I use my cameras for travel and grandkid photos. The Canon 50D has a myriad of features that make it wonderful for most any application. So far, I haven't found anything to complain about. I have a Canon 5D also, I like it, too, but it is much heavier than the 50D. The magnification factor in the 50D has pros and cons with wide angles hard to come by. But my 300mm lens turns into a 480mm!

I am an avid "prosumer photographer" with a variety of interests with nature and wildlife my favorite. Also own a Canon 1D MkII and a lot of Canon glass. The intended use of this camera is for travel when I don't want to lug the bigger stuff around. In that respect it performs quite well. I shoot only in RAW and my computer has had to adjust to the larger files as I download them and post process in Canon DPP or in photoshop.

I bought this camera and I just love it, I bought some better lenses as well and my photos have become so much better, It makes me want to improve my skills so much, the only problem I have with it is the on and off button is a bit hard to use but maybe it's meant to be that way, I liked my rebel's on/off better. If you are considering this camera then I would recomend it.

I would go for the 50D if moving up from a xxxD body (Xs, Xti...). The larger frame size makes it much easier to hold and the extra buttons allow you to quickly access settings without scrolling through menus. The body has a noticably heaftier and more sturdy feel than an xxxD model. The high resolution 3" monitor is one of it's best features. The monitor has enough detail and the cameras .jpg creation is accurate enough to verify focus and give a good idea as to exposure (the histogram is still most accurate).

I would not upgrade from a 30D or 40D unless your existing camera dies or unless you really want the new hi-res screen. ISO noise shows up rather early and the H2 (ISO 12800) mode is pretty much useless at all times. Recording in 7.5mp RAW and upconverting does a good job taming noise above ISO 1600 but in all I would have been happier if the 50D were 12mp with improved noise performance.

The larger, brighter LCD would definitely be the highlight of this camera for me. As an aspiring portrait photographer, I was really hoping to see much more of a difference between this camera and my older Canon Rebel XT. When viewing and editing pictures I was surprised @ the amount of noise detected even @ 400 ISO.
If I had the option to rent first, then buy, I probably would NOT have purchased this Canon 50D. Now, I am stuck with it.

Solid camera, but my first copy has issues with Sandisk's 4gb abd 8gb Extreme III cards. The cards work fine in my brother's 40D and the 50Ds at the local camera shop, but my LCD keeps reading "cannot format card with camera." Nice to know my $140 of CF cards won't work in my particular camera... I've go the most recent firmware updates. I haven't found an other incidents of this happening with the 50D, so I'm hoping canon can get this figured out...

Super fast camera with excellent resolution. The faster processor makes the autofocus more responsive than my 40D and I can even tape over the contacts and use autofocus with my 1.4x on my 100-400mm lens again. It definately has higher resolution but is more sensitive to camera shake than the 40D, but when the IS and shutterspeed line-up the photos are very sharp. The sensor responds different than the 40D as the RAW files respond much better to noise reduction. Overall pleased - plus the bonus of a great display and micro focus adjustment.

This was pre-ordered and needless to say, I was excited to be one of the first ones to receive it. I have done some outdoor landscape shots and indoor studio shots with this camera. First thing, I have had 2 occurrences of err99 where the camera completely locked up. This occurred during shooting so I had to disconnect the battery and luckily the camera rebooted. Compared to my 5d, the color saturation looks more artificial and washed out. I tried different configurations of picture style, color space, white balance, but no real improvement. 17-40mm, 24-105mm, 70-200mm F2.8 IS, and 500mm lenses were used. Overall, good quality built. Err99 concerns me.
