The camera is absolutely great! It has A LOT of features that you can play with. For me as I switched from a different brand it took some time to figure it out andmake the settings work the best. It is quite heavy and if you add a great lens like 17-55 mm f/2.8 it all comes to a pretty heavy gear but the quality of images is fantastic! I would recommend it to everyone!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300S DX Digital D-SLR Camera, 12.3 Megapixel, Interchangeable Lens, Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty:
I bought the D300s hoping to get more out of my camera and to advance my photo skills from amateur to a more advanced stage. The D300s far exceeded my goals. The D300s was one of the best decisions I ever made. In the short time I've been able to use it, I have seen a dramatic improvement in my photos, based, I believe, on the advanced features, its ease of use, and the great quality that Nikon builds into its products. I have a friend who wants to to start selling my photos, but I know I am not ready for that. Still, to get that kind of response is a tribute as much to the D300s as it is to the modest skills I have now acquired. And I now look at the world around me in terms of light, composition, color, and design.
Bravo Nikon.

This is one of the best SLR cameras in the price range. It's easy to use and provides top quality photos. Best for semi-pro and amateur photographers.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300S DX Digital D-SLR Camera, 12.3 Megapixel, Interchangeable Lens, Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty:
I have a D300, which was an upgrade from D100 & D80. D300s allows me to have 2 separate photo systems within same familiar format, with upgraded features.
Primarily use for wildlife, macro, and landscape photography. Because it is compatable with all manual Nikkor lenses, I can utilize older long lenses along with newer AF glass.
Makes a great travel camera with Nikkor 18-200 vr lens.
I don't have to baby this camera because of the build quality, and sensor dust control.
I am concerned about memory card compartment security. The door does not have a seperate latch like on the D300. Time will tell.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300S DX Digital D-SLR Camera, 12.3 Megapixel, Interchangeable Lens, Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty:
Moving up from a D80 gave me the much needed PC sync port for working with studio lighting, more auto focus points, faster burst mode and a little larger image for enlargements/prints purposes.
I use the camera for fine art landscape, portraiture, product/commercial, natural light and in the field, jungle, mountains, (whatever) travel photography, so the camera body has to be rugged and able to handle extremes. This body is much more rugged than the D80 and fits my hand a bit better, especially with a vertical battery grip.
As a back-up or main camera for the pro or semi-pro, or as a main camera for everyone else, this is a supremely capable tool that will get you half way there - the rest of the way is up to you!

I just took a family vacation/camping trip and brought this camera along. I love the ease in switching from video to stills. I'm so used to holding an SLR camera body that the videos that I took are much better than the ones I've taken with our palm sized DVD recorder.
The quality in the still images is right up there with what I've come to expect from using Nikon cameras over the last 25 years.
Overall I am very satisfied with this camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300S DX Digital D-SLR Camera, 12.3 Megapixel, Interchangeable Lens, Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty:
I recently upgraded my camera from the Pentax K10d to this Nikon D300s and I am just as happy as I thought I would be. The Pentax had many pro features, but the Nikon feels and reacts more like a pro body.
Above all, I am extremely happy with the overall feel and speed of the D300s. I have only found a few situations in low light where the focusing struggled, but by changing the focussing mode from spot to dynamic I cured that problem. I love the dynamic 3D tracking. Another great feature is the three programmable buttons, although it would be nice to be able to adjust ISO by holding a button and turning a dial. I could do this with the Pentax and find it very difficult to press the Nikon's ISO button with my left hand without taking my eye from the viewfinder.
The LCD display is large and clear and the menus are logical and easy to read. The Info button really helps as well while finding your way around each menu item. I really recommend setting one of your function buttons to My Menu as well, as this will bring up the first item in your My Menu. My first item is the ISO menu for manually adjusting ISO and activating or deactivating auto ISO.
The LiveView and Movie features are not as good as I thought they would be. LiveView is good for holding the camera over your head to compose shots and for zooming in to manual focus, but you loose the image while using auto focus. I thought I could get around this by putting the camera in tripod mode for Contrast Detect AF, but I found they call it "tripod" mode for a reason, since it won't focus to save your life unless it's on a tripod.
The Movie feature is disappointing because there is no way to manually adjust your exposure while recording. Trying to record a subject with a very bright background resulted in an underexposed image. I hope this will be changed in a firmware upgrade.
Overall, extremely happy and really looking forward to working with this camera.

I love my d300s. I was using a d50 for a couple of years and then finally decided to upgrade after shooting with my brother's d300 for a month. The d300s is great. The 51 point autofocus system is amazing and the focus is extremely fast. I've had Canon users use the camera and comment on how fast the focus was.
The stored memory settings is great for presetting your camera.
I really like the video feature, it is really nice as long as you remember that first and foremost this is still a DSLR.
I did experience some hissing with an external mic plugged into the external mic input. I read that some other users also have this problem, that it might be due to some bad grounding.
That is all...

I used the 300 at the last portrait studio and for events along with the 17-55mm lens. When I went out on my own, I decided to go with the D300s and same lens and am completely satisfied with this purchase.

Still learning the camera, but it is not as hard as I thought it might be after using a D70s for a few years. Going to Thailand in a few days, and I will use it extensively. Great camera.

The D300s is super fast, but when coupled with the MB-D10 Battery/Grip it turns into a machine gun! The dual slots are cool (CF and SD)and you can choose between which card or both, back-up or overflow or a combination of both. I'm impressed that when I do crank it up to ISO 1600, I actually get sharp, clear and basically noiseless photos from the DX sensor.
I purchased this body with the new Nikon 70-200mm VRII package that was offered this spring by Nikon...I couldn't be happier.
Be prepared to read your owners manual, because the set-up, shooting and custom menus will take some time to learn. I like that you can set-up individual sub-menus, in which, you can define your AF, meter, sharpness, saturation...you name it. I have a sub-menu for sports, indoor, outdoor/landscape, flash and wildlife. If you like the DX format, the D300s is the top of the Nikon line. My first DX Nikon was the D80 (which I love), but believe me there is a night and day difference in quality, sensor, features when compared with the D300s.
I'm quite pleased with this purchase, and as a side note...I have used several AI manual focus lenses with the D300s and it is a breeze to input the focal length and aperture settings so that you get full use of Nikon's Matrix metering system.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300S DX Digital D-SLR Camera, 12.3 Megapixel, Interchangeable Lens, Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty:
After using a D 200 for several years I decided that it was time to upgrade to the D300s. My first DSLR was a Nikon D70; I then moved to the D 200. If you are familiar with either of these cameras you will not have any problem switching to the 300s. The controls are nearly the same and in the same location and even though the set up menu is a bit more complicated nothing is really new, you just have more options. The viewing screen is obviously larger and sharper. At this point I am also confident that there is a real improvement in the sharpness and tonal quality of the recorded image.
But, there was a problem the first time I tried to download images to my computer. After hooking everything up and using the Nikon software to transfer the RAW images into CS 4 I was unable to open the files. I received the following message: "could not complete the request since it is not the right kind of file". Evidently Nikon has made some changes to their RAW files that prevented Adobe from recognising them. Not to worry though, Adobe has a patch on their site that corrects whatever problem that was created. After downloading this patch everything seems to work just fine.
I have not tried the Video functions yet and so I can not comment on them. But everything else seems to work fine and I would recommend that you consider an upgrade if you feel it is necessary.

Great camera with good picture quality. Not the best video capabilities out there as the Canon's entry level DSLRs will get you 1080p, but for the purpose of taking pictures; it's a great camera. Fast and accurate, feels sturdy and everything else all the review sites say.

I use the D300S for general photography, street, and travel. It is very rugged and full of features. The 2 card slots are great to have. Best "prosumer" DSLR from any manufacturer (IMHO). Some folks seem to have issues with the video mode, but if you nail the settings the results are great! Be sure to couple the D300S with fast glass. I am re-discovering the greatness of my 17-55 & 70-200, and the 35 f/1.8 is just too perfect as a walk-around lens on a D300S body. P.S. Get the MB-D10 battery grip - great balance with the heavier lenses.

Nikon fan so only real regret is Canon 7D comes out the following month with what Nikon should have included in the D300S. Great camera builds on D300 foundation. Unable (yet) to replicate the video quality shown on Nikon website. May be there but I still haven't matched it. Debated D90 vice D300S..and finally selected D300S. Still wondering if the additional cost was worth it...but think I could have had another long telephoto or at least made a dent in the cost had I selected the D90. Recommend you rent or at minimum go to a photo shop and get both into your hands. Unless you really use the controls and stretch the envelop...the D90 plus an additional lens will make you happier. IF, on the other hand, you want to really go toward the high end of exploiting the cameras controls...then the D300S is the way to go.

Recently upgraded from a d60. The external control features on the d300s are very nice and user friendly. Although both cameras take great pictures, the d300s seems to do a better job in low light and for moving subjects. Because of the the quality look/feel/operation of the d300s, I believe this camera should last a very long time.

This camera is just under the "FX" level. I especially like the feel of the camera. Had it in the rainy snow and held up great in rough weather. The camera will be my last for a while and is one I can grow into. The video is bonus and I am learning how to use it in location situations. All in all it is a great camera so far. Price has come down since this review and can make it more accessible to others.

I've read some complaints about the video. To me, that's just an added bonus. If I want to shoot extra high quality videos, I'll buy the proper tool for that. I shoot a lot of industrial items & with the video feature, I can do still shots as well as send our customers video of a part or problem in manufacturing. This is a great camera.
Use the video for what it was intended & you'll be fine.
