Given we're in 2015, it's not the newest camera around and the pixel count is lower than most but, as a beginner/learning photographer I wanted to upgrade to a better spec body without throwing around loads of cash on a d7100 or an FX body. I figure that can wait until I know what I'm doing. I wanted all (or as much as possible) of the control of a 610 or 7100 and have accumulated a few pretty decent lenses to practice on. I just loaded up my new (second-hand with low shutter count) d300s with a 35mm f1.8, a 50mm f1.4 and my 24-70 f2.8. I was expecting ok results... Then I was blown away by the quality improvement over my old beginner 3200!!! Lower pixel count, it seems, doesn't matter so much when you get into the pro-bodied Nikons. Would recommend to anyone in a similar boat and can't wait to get my hands on an FX body once I've mastered this!

After taking pictures, some friends and I were talking around the bed of my sons truck. I placed my D300S in the bed and forgot I left it there. Minutes after my son took off and miles later, I remembered what I did and immediately called him to tell him to pull over to get the camera. That was in the summer of 2012, It's now 2014 and there is nothing wrong with the camera. I still takes great pictures.

I majored in Photojournalism years ago and learned on a Pentax K1000. I went into another field but wanted a Nikon back then. Recently, I picked up a used D300s with a lens and love it! It may take some time to get used to all of the bells and whistles, but the pictures are sharp. Great camera!

I just bought this in March 2014 and I am debating whether I should send it to Nikon for repair or return it to the store. This camera froze on me twice. After the first incident, Nikon Support taught me how to reset it. Few days later, I took it with me on vacation and it happened again. The reset technique did not work. It took more than one day for the camera to come back to normal operation. When it is operating normally, it is a great camera and I enjoy the speed of the camera. So, I am not sure if it is a camera problem or user problem. I own a D80 also and I have not encountered the same problem with D80.

Words cannot express the joy this camera is to use. Solid and confident you'll be, with this camera around your neck. Who cares about the overkill on the above 12 mega pixels anyway? My old D200 gives me beautiful poster size prints, time and time again and that's only 10 MP. The D300s has two more which is perfect for me in my weddings and stock work. I had a D7000 and I did not like the controls and the larger MP's, not to mention the plastic lightweight feel of it and the focusing problems so I got a D3200 because of the price but the slow focusing and extremely long shutter-lag, as well as the fact that 24 MP rapidly takes up memory on the computer (think I'll trade it in for a new lens) - also the fact that I tried it out during an engagement session and I had to rely on the faster more accurate focusing of my D200. Yet I still needed an upgrade and was not waiting for the supposedly D400 so I saw the deal that Adorama had for an E + rated used D300s, yet I had my doubts that it was in the condition they described. Was I wrong! I'm glade I took the chance and purchased this beauty. Wow! Thanks for a great deal Adorama!

I have yet to have a Nikon I do not like but this is one of my favorites. It focuses fast. It has lots of sensitivity for low light and a quick shutter for bright days watching sports. Now that I have a D600 I should give it to my niece but cannot part with it.

I had this durable gear for almost 5 years now and never gave me any problem. Always ready for any occasions. And I'm excited to use my new nikon 24-70 mm 2.8. Hoping to make the most out of this camera.

I have photographed both sports, landscapes and indoor corporate events with the D300s, panned incoming ski racers just to be impressed with the continuous auto-focus features, shot running water at F22 only to be amazed by the accuracy of the detail in the image, even had the opportunity to run out of memory with a borrowed D4 while shooting a Kayak event, switched the body on the 600mm glass with my D300s and produced equally stunning results. An excellent camera well designed, easy to understand, user friendly with top notch technology. As for it's low light abilities with or without flash it can do the job but a state of the art full frame I believe would give any photographer a comparative advantage.

Purchased this camera in 2010. Have used it coupled to the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII for three years shooting wildlife photography. It has never failed me. I have to say that this is a very robust camera, able to take a lot of abuse in a lot of shooting conditions without complaint. It's been by far the best purchase I have made in a camera body. Shooting with the 600mm f/4, the D300s has locked on with the 52 point AF quickly enabling me to get in-flight shots of waterfowl. I certainly hope that Nikon will come out with a suitable successor to this great camera body because there is a need for a professional grade DX camera still. Not everybody has upgraded to the D4.

I am pleased with the condition of the D300s shipped. I was concerned with the number of exposures and found that the E+ rated camera had about 11000 exposures. I was also pleased to have additional cables shipped which were not mentioned in the what's included description. I am currently shooting with a D200 and am enjoying the enhancements contained with this camera.

This body was purchased as an upgrade replacing a D5000 that I had installed into a photo booth. I previously was using a D90 as my main camera and the D5000 as my backup. Reading the reviews and given my current collection of DX lenses, it made sense to upgrade to the D300s as I shoot studio portraits and the PC Slave is convenient. Definitely contemplating upgrading to the next pro-series DX body if and when Nikon releases it.

I photograph for my own buisness as well as my college news paper. I love how everything is right at my fingertips, from ISO to White balance EVERYTHING. Previous to this I had a Nikon D90, I have to say the images produced by the D300s are, in my opinion, far supperior. Many people clamor for higher mega-pixel counts. However 12.1 is plenty for me. As for the cropped sensor, Lens imperfections as well as added distance have kept me in the Dx, and I do not see that changing in the forseeable futre.

When I upgraded to the D300s from the D200 in 2010, I was expecting it to be more of a lateral move. I mean, 10mp to 12mp is, apparently, at the threshold of perception regarding image resolution. But there's more to this camera than megapixels, or the lack of them, given today's offerings; the autofocus system is outstanding, the control layout is excellent (and more customizable than the D200), and the high frame rate coupled with the autofocus makes it THE dx camera for sports. And the sensor nonetheless delivers decent dynamic range, given its age. While the video capability is nice to have, it had little influence on my decision to buy this camera. For anyone considering an upgrade, it shouldn't be overlooked. Granted, its replacement may be on the horizon, but this is an excellent camera that can be had NOW.

I upgraded from a D80 to the D300s for a number of reasons, but primarily because I was having difficulties getting tack sharp pics from the D80. I felt from the moment I started using it that the shutter activation was causing camera movement. With the D300s, I am getting the sharp photos that I had hoped for and it is as smooth as silk when the shutter activates. No camera movement whatsoever. I'm using the same lenses as I did with the D80, but am simply amazed at the improvement in picture quality. Needless to say, I am VERY pleased with this camera!

I bought the D300s in March of 2011, and I've taken well over 35,000 pictures since then. The camera I had before this was the Nikon D3000 and the difference between the D3000 and the D300s is just astronomical. Since I bought this camera i've been shooting a lot more sports than I used to. The fast shutter speed makes it ideal, and I've really loved that aspect of it. However my bread and butter as a photographer is portrait photography. I've had some problems with the focus and the sharpness of my portraits. That's the only reason I'm giving this review 4 stars instead of 5. I love the camera and I'd recommend it for sports, but for portraits and some of the landscape I've done, I've actually preferred my old D80 as it tends to give me sharper images.

I just went to Ireland and did a shoot with the 300 s and a D4 , I loved the D4 but on pure quality of image in day to day shooting you can not see a difference ,I made 11X 14 prints and showed it various photographers asked them to pick out D4 shots from 300 s , they never got it right , so for so called old tech its still giving me great shots

NIkon, I'm starting to question your commitment to the professional DX body. The D300s is way overdue for an upgrade, but all I hear about is yet another FX model coming up. If I don't see an upgrade for the D300s model soon, I will probably switch to Canon. At this time, a rating of "good" is generous for your outdated D300s. Anyone in the market for a new pro-level DX camera body should wait, like I have been for ages.

We are in mid 2011, and not earlier than this week I decided to take the step towards the D300s. I have had a D700 for many years, and needed a DX complement for it. Of course, I started with the D7000 - which is a nice camera, but if you are used to the look and depth of RAW results from a D700, and if you are used to the solidity of this FX gem, the D7000 is quite a bit of a let-down. I also did not like the fact that the D7000's 16 MPix sensor (which would be somewhere between 30 and 40 MP...
