After reading a lot of reviews for entry level dSLR camera i finally decided to get the D3100 for my wife's graduation. This was the first time i was purchasing a dSLR and i am amazed. I couldn't have asked for something better. My wife wants to learn photography as a hobby and always wanted to get a nice camera and it doesn't get any better than this.
If anyone wants to take the dive in the world of SLR cameras for the first, they won't be disappointed at all.

I have an early Nikon F (that's a 35mm SLR) and I loved it. But I had to make the transition to a digital SLR and this camera was suggested to me by a friend of mine. The camera works great and it has better features than the D3000 and the D5000. The auto mode takes excellent pictures and the manual mode takes even better. What I loved was that I could use my old lenses so that saved me a couple hundreds, and the lens that came with it is very efficient to. I have taken pictures of the moon, flowers, scenery, birthdays, you name it and it took around 2 weeks for me to completely understand and get used to all the functions which is not a long time.

It is easy to use and gives more value for the money paid. It comes with plenty of features that can only be understood by using the camera and checking the user's manual.
The shutter speed is impressive, whether shooting at an event (e.g. wedding), using continuous shoot or the self-timer.
What is really and advantage: you can edit photos on the camera.
I still have to test the video more, I wonder if it is a good idea to have both modes on a single camera (photo and video) as the video has plenty of features and options, and things to care about too!

The camera is about all one needs if you add the 28-300 lens. There are very few instances when one would need a lens shorter or longer than that. It is light and quick to focus.
