I bought this lens because it was refurbished by Cannon and in the process individually checked and calibrated, unlike new lenses that come off the assembly line. Before buying the lens I bought and returned 2 new ones and felt my chances of getting a keeper were much better with a refurbished lens because of the inspection. The difference in price compared to a new lens was only a few dollars, but the guarantee was the same length as a new lens and it was inspected before being put in a box and sealed with a Canon refurbished sticker.

I've only had the lens a very short time, but have made a number of tests in low light and am very pleased. I'd read evaluations of this lens on the internet recommending it not be used below 2.2 or 2.8, but the photos I got at 1.8 in my tests were just fime. I'm thinking this is due to the fact the lens was calibrated during the inspection process.

This is my first refurbished lens but based on this eperience not likely to be the last.

This is the least expensive lens I own but it is also the lens I use most often. It is light wieght and takes great pictures in any light conditions.

It was recommend to me from a friend to start with this lens and then work up to the higher end ones.

Just bought this lens 2 weeks ago mainly for street photography, as I hate carrying around the heavy L-optics.;-) Great bang for the buck, you can't go wrong!!

Used it for a fashion shoot in a very low light (had to shoot @ 800 ISO) 2 days ago, was totally thrilled by the quality of the images... for that price... Amazing. :)

This is a very nice lens for the price; probably the best bang for the buck out of any lens on the market. However, it's cheaply priced for a reason. The casing is all plastic. While it does feel somewhat cheap, it's still well built and doesn't feel like it will fall apart at any moment. I've only had it for about a month, but am loving it so far.

Pros:
- Great price
- light
- small
- good low light
- awesome dof

Cons:
- all plastic
- small imperfection in the lens(possibly due to refurb); doesn't affect performance, however

This lens is definitely the best value I've come across so far - great sharpness, even at wider apertures. It's a real bonus to get down to f1.8 for less than hundred bucks. It's super-light (feels a bit toyish) and SMALL, making it a great walk-around lens. It sounds like it's going to break when it racks through it's entire range focusing, but it won't, so don't sweat it. The "harsh" bokeh gets bashed a lot, but I have had absolutely no complaints about it, especially for the price. It's cheaper than a kit lens and as sharp as L lenses when used properly, so do yourself a favor and pick one up.

Bought this 'cause everyone said that it is a must have lens for the price. Great pics although the quality of the casing is cheap (plastic). Again though the pics are great and the F/1.8 is great for low light indoor non-flash photography.

This lens should be in everyones bag. Its not the best feeling lens construction wise but it takes great shots and is very fast!

I use this product alot with natural light portraits. It has beautiful clarity with a great depth of field. Produces consistently awesome images

I always wanted to try a prime and this lens doesn't disappoint. Although not the super heavy duty, but a durable enough light weight plastic. I buy alot of refurbished lenses by Canon as I think they are a good value for the money and you know they are calibrated correctly. I use this lens with my 40D and it is great for indoor casual snapshots if you don't want to use flash.
