This lens has been glued to my 7D since the day I recieved it. It focuses very fast and is right on the money. Pics are sharp and contrast/colors are top notch. I use this lens for a walk around, birds(it is unbelievabley sharp with a 2X tc), zoo and landscapes. It's performance in all areas is steller. Some would say that weight and cost are Cons but, to me, both are minor inconveniences!

I've shot several several weddings and numerous portraits sessions with this lens (paired with the Canon 5D MkII) and have not been disappointed. Fast accurate focusing, tack sharp even at 2.8 and at all focal lengths, and built like a tank (and weighs like one too). The IS is pretty amazing too in low available light. Now, it's a bit pricey, but worth every cent.

I used this lens paired with the Canon 7D and I was not disappointed with the results. Shooting indoor tennis I was still able to capture action in indoor lighting conditions. Excellent lens! I can't wait to take it outside on a sunny day.

This lens is very sharp. Pictures taken with it have very good contrast and color retention. The IQ is comparable to other L prime lenses (35L and 135L). The focus is very fast. IS also helps to get more keepers. Although the bokeh from this lens is not as smooth as that from 135L, its versatility and IS are more useful for me. The lens hood is also much more resistant to scratch than those from other L lenses.

If you're looking at this lens you likely have heard the hype, know its capabilities and aren't scared away by the price. The IS is amazing. The only downsize of this lens is that it is heavy. However, if you were to carry an 85mm, 135mm and 200mm prime, it would be more bulky. You would get the added advantage of larger apertures, though I'm not convinced the optical quality would be any better. This lens is good on a crop body and really shines on a full frame.

I love pretty much every aspect of this lens. It's build quality, Focus Speed, Image Stabilization and yes I love it's Image Quality. It is very sharp, has a good bokeh and I like it's handling, while not light, it is still not too heavy to carry around all day. There is simply nothing I don't like about this lens, well except it's price tag. One thing I would like to see would be a different tripod mount,one that can be taken off without having to take the lens off the camera.

My First "L" glass, and it's very worth it. I really can't add much to what others have said, It's sharp, it's build like a tank, amazing contrast, f2.8, etc. It is heavy, but it's really not that bad, and worth the weight, if you need 2.8.
One thing I will say: I was impressed by the quality of the lens hood - the inner portion of it is flocked so it blocks even more light. I used to buy cheap, off-brand hoods to save money, but now that I know, I'll be buying Canon hoods for most of my lenses now!

We shoot fashion, portraits, and live events for our clients. This len has a very fast auto focus and the new IS system is excellent. Hand held at 1/15sec and is still sharp. The only disadvantage that we can see is the weight of this len. This len can create some backache or pain if you are not use to carrying this size of len. We currently have mostly prime lenses in our len case. We certainly need to invest a new carrying case because of the size/weight of this len. All in all, if you can afford this len and don't mind the weight... this len is a two thumbs up.

Mount together the following: EOS 7D, 70-200mm f/2.8L mk2, 580EXII, Gary Fong, and battery grip for 7D came to a total of around 9 LBs.

I photograph a lot of events in poor light and that involve a lot of subject motion. The version II of this lens provides a significant improvement in my ability to assure excellent focus in these conditions, and the improved IS really is noticeable. If you are always working in bright light, there probably is no advantage to the II version, but if you work at all in marginal light this model is absolutely worth the money.

Upgraded from a stellar copy of f/4 IS version. It was not disappoint. It's every bit as sharp or sharper at any FL. Focus is fast and accurate. Color is rich and bokeh is creamy. It's a no brainer if you can afford it. The weight actually not bad and balance better on a 1d body.

The lens is very new to me but in indoor low light situations it has been outstanding. It has also proven very good for portraits as it allows for a very narrow depth of field but sharp focus of the area you want to emphasize.

The primary dowside is the weight.

When I asked a world-renown pro photographer for some good advice during a chance meeting, he told me, "To do this professionally, you have to be able to give people what they cannot give themselves.". This can obviously apply to skill, but he was talking about equipment. The great masses are not able to go out and buy this lens, and therefore cannot get the results it can yield. If you want to produce the best art that you can...get the best gear. That is what this lens is...the best!! You know your holding quality when you open the box. Technically, WAY ahead of your typical kit lenses. If you have the money, and the NEED for the best that is available...this is the choice. So far...very fast and accurate AF. Very sharp images from f2.8 upward. I am very pleased with the purchase and confident that this lens will help me take awesome pictures for years to come. Oh yeah... It's really not as big or as heavy as some people make it seem.

This lens is hands down the best one I own, prime or zoom, for image quality. Paired with a 5D-Mark II body and shooting at ISO 100, it produces images so clear, noiseless, detailed and sharp that it appears to be almost liquid reality. The detail it resolves is truly amazing, and may make this lens unsuitable for shooting portraits of women, unless you want to take note of every hair out of place, every pore, skin bump, or wrinkle, no matter how small.

Pros: Sharp as all get-out, clear as a bell, perfect color accuracy, super fast and accurate focus, excellent background blur ("bokeh" to some), nearly silent and very fast and versatile.

Cons: Heavy; has several control switches that must be paid attention to or taped in place to prevent unintentional shifting; and it attracts too much attention from potential subjects.

Would I recommend this to a friend? They'd have to be a darned good friend, cause I don't really want the competition! If not for that, definitely.

All I can say is this is just an awesome glass. I used it with my Canon 5D MK II and the result is just amazing. Before buying this optics I researched a lot because I had to justify myself the extra bucks it was costing as compared to its predecessor. I had the "non IS" version of this lens, and I thought it also was a great lens, but at low shutter speeds, because of slightly shaking hands, I would very often get blurry pictures. With this lens I can shoot at 1/5 sec, with the IS on, and consistency get great, sharp shots!
This is, without doubt, the best lens that I have ever used.

Upgraded from the 70-200 f/2.8 IS v.1. The first version was very nice, but the v.2 just blows it away. The IS works great and able to hand hold at 1/20th with very good results. The colors, bokeh, contrast, and sharpness is wonderful. After shooting with this, I immediately sold my 135L since I doubt that I would use the 135 anymore after getting this lens.
Super fast focus for sports even in the IS mode.
This lens is worth every penny.

I am very happy with this purchase. I had the non IS version prior to this and thought that one was good but this lens is faster at focusing and sharper. At this price, if it had any flaws what so ever, or did not perform as well as it does, I would have returned it. I'm keeping it! Definitely worth the money if you are looking for a versatile zoom that is close to prime lens performance.

One thing... I keep seeing people comment on how heavy it is. Ummm, yeah... Look at the specs.. It is heavy but I don't look at this as a con. This is a lot of glass and it is built very well. I like the balance of a heavier lens in my hands. I'm also more than willing to carry and use a lens that is a little heavier for the performance that this lens delivers.

I have used this lens at several soccer games and get consistently great results, with sharp images and fast autofocus. The only downside is that this lens is heavy, but that's a minor complaint given that it is built like a tank and feels rock solid. Overall an excellent lens.

I sold my f4 IS version, which is a stunning lens, to get this. All I can say is wow. It seems to be a bit sharper and "contrasty" than my F4 which was an amazing lens already. Images are tack sharp at 2.8. The IS is so quiet I had to double check to make sure it was working. Everything about it works flawlessly as it should for the price. It was a tough bill to swallow but well worth it considering it should last forever.
Highly recommended.

great lens. I had the old one, broke it and did not replace it for over 12 months until this one came out. very happy but the vignetting is shocking. Almost tempted to send it back due to its elevated price I was expecting it to be close to perfect.

Campaired old 70-200 IS F2.8 to this lens and could see the difference on my 7D. Took pictures with both at F2.8 and F20 (both ISO400). New lens was crisper. I also took a low light picture and the difference in focal distance could be seen.

I did a lens test between the new 70-200 f/2.8L IS against the original (my coworker's lens) and my own 200mm f/2.8L II.

The 70-200 f/2.8L IS II was sharper than the 70-200 f/2.8L IS on 200mm @ f/2.8, and was just as sharp as the 200mm f/2.8L II on 200mm @ f/2.8.

This lens is definitely a worthy upgrade to the original 70-200 f/2.8L IS, and is a must have lens for all photography enthusiasts and professionals.

I photograph a wide range including wildlife, shooting (firearms) sports, and am getting into portrait photography.

This lens replaces my 2 year old Tamron 70 - 200 f/2.8 DI LD. I really loved the focal length with the Tamron and used it all the time but I knew that the Canon would take my telephoto shots to the next level. The IS is just amazing. @ 200mm the lens is just as sharp as 70mm. Though this lens is heavy it balances perfect on my 7D.
