Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I was a little concerned ordering a lens without IS but I have not had any issues with that at all. 99.9% of all my pictures have been amazingly sharp...and the bokeh this lens produces is beautiful!! The only down side is it's actual size and it's "L" tan color.....it draws attention when you'd rather just blend in...both things I can totally live with. This is an amazing lens for the money and I love, love, love it!!!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

The first time I used this lens on a wedding was just last week and the quality of pictures I got were great, provided there is enough light to expose the subject. For situations where there is less light, a long exposure, high ISO and steady hand compliments the f4 aperture to get a good quality pictures.

The weight is light compared to a 70-200 f2.8, so moving around is a easy, especially if there are already two cameras hanging on your neck and shoulder. Who would need the extra weight and price of an f2.8 if there is a flash that can be remotely triggered to give enough light to the subject when applicable?

I think the build quality is good, but I still have to see this in time.

You will get a good Bokeh if you keep in mind that this is a telephoto lens and the aperture is f4. You have to clearly define your foreground, middleground, and background and place the subject properly where you want him/her/it to be.

I am very satisfied with this lens because it answers my need with NOT THAT MUCH COST.

I saved up for this lens over the cheaper Canon 75-300mm and am happy with that choice so far. Covers all of the zoom that I need and delivers some great shots so far. Wish that I could have afforded the IS or f2.8 versions, but this one has a great resale value when I get to that point.

This is my first DSLR and L lens. I bought the 70-200 f4L and my Canon 40D at the same time. They arrived July 1, 2010. So far I have only used this with my new 40D to photograph landscapes and the kids recreation activities. The focus is very good, and fast. This works well with the sports they do. The bokeh is average. I like the fact that you can manually focus at anytime even in AF mode. I plan on using it for Cross Country and Track meets, but I don't think the reach is quite long enough to get across a large field. I may need to get a 1.4x tele converter.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I've had this lens two weeks and have taken well over 1000 images with it. This lens is very sharp and clear. Extremely fast focusing...which is the only problem I have had with this lens. It focuses so fast that when you are panning with a running horse and the horse goes behind the uprights of a jump, the lens will actually focus on the uprights when the focal point passes it then back on the horse a split second after (I always use all-focus for equine sports). Now on the flip side of the coin, the very fast focus on this lens is a great asset. In the past I couldn't take pictures of horses running straight at me because the lens combination I was using wouldn't focus quickly enough or provide enough clarity. With this lens, this type of picture is no problem (DC motor, gear-driven in my old lens vs USM of the 70-200F4 L). Picture quality is consistent and clear. Quality construction. I am truly impressed with this lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

It is very important to use the correct shutter speed - no less than 1/70 at 70mm, no less than 1/200 at 200mm - since this lens is not image stabilized. This is a very sharp lens at higher shutter speeds.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

This lens is an outstanding value.

I have to tell you that I am constantly amazed at how tack sharp and colorful the images are. I've been told they look 3D.

This lens is fantastic for well-illuminated portraits and outdoor sports - I put the drive on continuous shooting and (at minimum) match the shutter speed (to the focal length) to offset blurring.

It's equally impressive for landscapes and architecture where f4 produces beautiful brokeh and f16 is tack sharp edge to edge.

I've taken some hand-held indoor low lighting shots (I typically use a 50mm 1.4 prime) and maxing out the iso has allowed some nice shots but this is NOT what this lens is built for.

Don't get me wrong - this lens is FAST. Also, the focus is instantaneous - in fact, if you're not paying attention, it'll focus on the nose instead of the eyes in less than a blink. Can't blame a lens for something like that!

This lens certainly has a vanity aspect. It looks like what it is - a big pro lens. Getting familiar with how to handle it and learning how to use it properly - due to the length, weight and focal range - may have a learning curve if you haven't used one before (I hadn't).

Although I considered getting the IS version I'm happy I did not. This lens is perfect for my shooting wants. It causes me to be more creative, more precise, think about my settings and best of all ... I've got a chunk of change left over for location shooting. Having the most expensive gear out there is nice ... having a tricked out portfolio from traveling to fantastic locations is much more interesting!

If you're shaky. If you're upper body is very weak. If you're a little sloppy in your shooting style - this lens may not suit you. Then again, the 70-200mm 2.8 IS may not save you either - what, with is being much heavier and larger and all.

In a nutshell, I LOVE this lens. It has me aspiring to become as good as it already is :)

I've used this lens to capture wildlife on hikes and found that it produced some very vivid and focused pictures. It was awesome to be able to get birds and squirrels without having to get so close they got scared away! It is a little on the heavy side. However, being the weenie that I am and being able to carry it on 6 and 7 mile hikes along with all of my other gear anyone should be able to. ;o)
I also have used this lens for pictures at my nephew's first birthday party. We got awesome pictures of him and his guests without having to be right up and in their faces.
I love this lens.

This is my 7th Canon lens and my first L from Canon.I use it for a wide range of things. Landscape, wildlife, nature and a lot of action railroad as well as still shots. I have only owned it for two weeks, and am not disappointed. f2.8 or faster would be nice, but you can't beat this lens for the price. It is clear throughout the focal range and really shines from f8 and and slower. At f4 shots are more than just acceptable. A nice lens to round this one off would be the 17-40mm f4 L.Also only about [$] if you are on a bit of a budget. Next stop, the Rebel T1i.

If you don't have all the money to buy the IS version...do not worry, this lens is worth the money! If used at the correct speed you'll get sharp and nice images.

The lens is fast for high speed moving objects, up to this time I have used it the most for wildlife photography and it seems it offers great sharpness, fast focusing, great aperture range.

The lens is heavy and if you have any of the "D" cameras you should do some neck excersises before buying it, probably if you have a grip with 2 batteries and a Flash unit with this lens you will have about 10.lbs in your neck! so take that in count.

I would recommend it to everyone! if you want to start with the "L" series without spending too much money, go for it!

This lens is ridiculously sharp with great contrast. I don't find myself needing to post-process any contrast as I need to with my Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6. The bokeh is great, and it's L build and image quality for under $600 new. I'm not at all unsatisfied with the lack of IS; the lens is very hand-holdable.

The one problem I have is when others cut down this product, think about it, this is one of the best lenses ever built, crisp clear photos, fast, durable and less money than the IS or the 2.8 (but made the same but without IS or bigger lense for 2.8), sure some of us have to save to get this lense but ohhh is it worth it. I have came to the point where this lense is on my camera all the time. I immediatly ordered the Canon tripod ring (again you get what you pay for) to increase clairity, less movement. Yeaaa well worth the money.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

This lens really surprised me as a test was done on a super dark foggy california day on the coast. No problem with light at full zoom and sharp as a tack, fast. Tracked migrations of birds with no problem at ISO 100 speeds!
Sure the 40D had a role to play but this lens is a bargain for the results it obtains.
5 star rating for it......

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I use this mostly outdoors to photograph son's baseball games(even a few night games), & the birds in my backyard. Have only had a month so have not yet used it for my other interests, after seeing the results so far I can't wait. This is a wonderful lens. I won't say for the money because it is great all by itself. Yet when you do Compare it in price to it's counterparts this makes it an even better purchase. I did a lot of research on this prior to purchase, and all the con situations are not situations I photograph in, so have had no issues with it at all. My only regret is I hesitated so long in purchasing it.

This was my first L and I have can't say anything bad about it. I do think it is a tad sharper then the 2.8 model but if I had had the money I would probably have sprung for the 2.8L IS, but that is about 3-4 time the cost. This is an amazing lens that is worth every bit of praise it gets.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I really am happy with the price-performance of this lens. Having Image Stabilization would be great, but considering how much cheaper and lighter this non-IS lens is, I strongly recommend this for any enthusiast.
I took some panning pictures of Formula 1 cars with this lens. Panning is difficult, but I still got some really fantastic and sharp pictures.

This is my first L lens, and I am really happy that there is at least one L lens that fits in my budget. Thank you Canon!

I've been shooting winter sports with this lens and have been very happy with its performance. It's not as fast as the f/2.8L but its neither as bulky nor as pricey either. Autofocus in good light with my XT body is very quick. Image quality is extremely good. If there are any drawbacks it's that the sensor crop makes it a little tight on the 70mm end, (112mm effective), and it's made me lust after more L quality glass.

Purchased late last year, and I've only had it out a coule of times since. I fell in love with the f/4 IS [...] But IS is twice the price, and I was planning on using it mostly outdoors, so I wanted to give this one a try.The AF is brilliant and fast, the colors from the lens are lush, and the sharpness is impressive. But f/4 is what it is, and you need a good deal of light to get sharp photos at the long end of the zoom. That's about the only downside I can think of though. It feels like a tank, the zoom and focus actions are smooth, and it's whisper quiet in operation. I'm smitten!

I chose this lens over the cheaper Canon lens (70-300mm). I was a bit unsure when I made the purchase but I am so glad I went with the L series. This lens is extremely durable and great quality. If you hold it up next to a cheaper Canon you can see just how much better the lens is. I have not had any problems with it so far. I have heard a lot of complaints about shaking and blurring images. Maybe I just have a steady hand, but I haven't had a problem. This lens is perfect for shooting wildlife! Love it!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

The Canon 70-200mm f4L is a little over rated. Advertisers do what they are paid to do and give this lens high praise. What they don't tell you is the quality produces no more quality then other manufacturers of equal value. It has magnification wiggle at the high end that is only manageable once tripod mounted. My experience thus far has proven that f4 is not really fast enough for pre and post sunlight photos. Its focal lengths are really not enough for wildlife in there natural setting, but OK for zoos and wildlife parks where animals are enclosed. Landscape have a tendency to be exaggerated at the low end. It is a bit unstable and out of balance. Something I could live with if it gave superior results to other products. This lens is not legally allowed into NFL football games based on its length which is a great disappointment. while the 70- 300mm is allowable. The case that is made to look like you get something free is only good for dust protection. You will need to go and buy a more durable case. I would recommend this lens to a friend, but only after we had a heart to heart understanding that the money he or she is about to spend may not be suitably spent for the expectation they are expecting. I would go on a photo shoot with them and allow them to try it out themselves. They may which to save and spend considerably more for the faster speed and stabilization feature.

I have done some outdoor portraits hand held and didn't have any pronblems. Fast focus and sharp pictures. My first L lens but won't be my last.

This is a great starter "L" lens, very solidly built and no wobbly plastic parts like kit lenses have. For a lens that costs this much, I wish that it was weather sealed though. Right now, I use this on an eos-3, and with a heavier body like that it is very balanced and easy to hold still. It lens is very easy to handle and is great for general-purpose photography.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I had the f/2.8 version of this lens and after trying it on my camera with the battery pack, I decided that it was much too heavy to use on a regular basis. I also felt that the price was very high for my needs.
I learned of the f/4 and decided that it would suit my needs just fine and I was right. I've used it for flashless performance photography and it did a wonderful job. It focuses quickly and does so quite well with my 30D. I noticed that the view through the viewfinder was nice and bright too. I think this was a great choice since I don't make money with my camera.

A tripod mount ring would be nice to have included. It's worth getting so you can rotate the camera instead of your tripod/monopod head.

It's a little annoying to go photographing outdoors and photograph from a close distance cuz the closest you'll get is at about 1.2 meters (aprox. 4-5 ft) Ohterwise i noticed it's not as vivid as the Sigma, but still i did some pretty nice portraits and studio shots. SO if you know you won't have to get to close to the subject it's a wonderful onjective

I carried out extensive research before opting for this lens. As my requisits entail carrying equipment for long days on extended travels. The weight penalty on the faster and sharper 2.8 s from canon and sigma was very significant. With a rebel xt and battery pack the handling is ideal. Auto focus is very fast, colour rendition excellent. No dilemmas here, value for money is outstanding. If you are torn between this lens and the faster ones try them on the camera body first as i did.I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this product

Refurbrished Canon "L" lenses like this one are a great opportunity to invest in superior optics. I upgraded from a 'consumer quality' Canon EFS f4.0 70-210mm and was amazed by the sharpness and saturation differences not to mention the Build quality and silent operation (USM)of the "L" series. Refurbrished does not mean inferior, it represents great value to the buyer. The only issue is the Lens Hood design which blocks access to a circular polarizing filter for nature photography but, most Lens Hoods have this problem in 35mm/DSLR optics.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I got this product about 5 months ago and since have been very satisfied with it. I got it as a gernal purpose medium telephoto lens for shooting nature, sports, and some wildlife. My camera body is a Canon EOS 30D, which has a 1.6x crop factor.I was torn between this lens and the 70-300 IS (Image Stabilization). I liked the IS, but i appreciated the extra 2/3 stop at 200 and the better image quality of the 70-200 f/4. This lens is sharp wide open and even sharper when stopped down. vinietting is not an issue on an APS-c DSLR. Build quality is great, especially for the price. All controls are smooth, the lens itself feels solid, and even the tiny switches have a saitisfying solidity to them. AF is the lightning quick ring type USM, and the only sound emited from the lens is a slight noise of shifting glass elements. You can also manually focus at any time, which in certain time critical scenes can be a life saver. The only negative of this lens is the fact that it does not go to F/2.8. when shooting sports that extra stop would have often kept me in the ISO 400 range rather than having to go up to 800. Even so, for the price i cant complain. If you are trying to decide between the 70-300 IS or the 700-200 F/4 L I hope this will help you decide. If you are a beginner to intermidiate photographer, this includes people who havn't quite yet made it away from the automatic mode and scene modes, id recomend the 70-300 IS. Its a very good lens and the IS will save you, especially as you start moving into the program Aperture, shutter, and manual modes. the extra reach (since it goes to 300) comes in handy as well. If you are an advanced photographer who is looking for quality above all else, go with the 70-200 F/4. While at times you may wish you had IS, the faster autofocus, better build quality, and better image quality of the 70-200 F/4 L will more than make up for it. In conclusion, i highly recomend this lens. [...]

Every picture (on a Canon 10D...i.e. not a full frame) is very sharp with good colors. Everytime I use it I wonder why I don't use it more. The only thing is that with a 1.6x crop factor (10, 20D, 30D,...etc) it's somewhat long for many applications. but, you can photograph people from a distance. That's a big plus if you're into it. Also, it stays focused while you change the zoom length.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

For the price this is a great lens. This is my prime lens. I have photographed alot of shots at 70mm and most people think I used a 50mm or even a wide lens. And I have used this to get a few birds such as seagulls very close up. I bought this around Nobember 2006 and I am still using it. This lens is great to get shy or wild animals, candid shots, certain sports such as cross country and potraits. However if you have extra money I suggest getting it's bigger brother the IS that can open up to 2.8 I do plan on buying the IS version once I am out of college or have enough money before then. The tripod adapter is somewhat of a let down because it is $[...] US just for one adapter ! However if you have a heavy tripod you can get away without the adapter. Really the only two major cons are the fact is not IS and the tripod adapter is so expensive. The fact is can only go to 4 is not that big of a deal to me but if you work in alot of low light areas then it may. To conclude it is a great lens and I intend to buy it's bigger brother the 70-200 F2.8 IS one day. If you do not have alot of money but can afford lens around 300-650 dollars this is a great lens.

I love it! Takes great, clear photo's. Can reach out and actually get what you are trying to get. You don't take a picture of something far away and have to try and remember what the picture is of.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I love my 70-200/4L. It is sharp, light, and represents excellent value for money. The build quality is superb, the lens does not extends when zooming or focusing nor does the front element rotate. The only thing this lens lacks is IS and Canon recently released an IS version.

If you need fast shutter speeds for action shots in low light then you might want to consider the 2.8 version. The disadvantage is the increase in weight.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

As far as optics and operation goes this lens is right up there with the best of them. I'm fairly hard on my equipment but this has easily outlasted my 300d camera and my 50mm f/1.8 and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses. The main/only drawbacks are those you could probably guess for yourself. Firstly, f/4 is perhaps a bit too slow for a 200mm lens and becomes somewhat limiting in darker situations. Secondly its big and white and hence draws attention. This is often not good as it can make your subject self-conscious and attract attention of theives etc. Thirdly it's a big and heavy sucker and finally it's not exactly cheap. Apart from that its a bloody good piece of kit.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

The lens is worth every penny that I paid for it. The lens is a little heavy but definitely manageable for hand held shoting. If your intended used is outside during the day the lens will produce the best pictures you have ever seen, look no further. If you’re going to shoot indoors or at night without using a tripod you will need to up the ISO setting to 800 and some times up to 1600 to prevent motion blur, I have the Cannon Digtal Reble XT. I would recommend looking at the f 4.0 IS or the 2.8F version of this lens if you will be taking alot of shoots indoors or night shots. I will eventually buy the 2.8 IS version of this lens but will still keep this lens for shooting outside because of the weight factor.

Using this lens with a Canon 20D. Never have any problem with higher L glass quality. Perfect complement to my Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM (both use 67mm filter size). I am now considering upgrading to the new version of this lens with IS, even though that one costs ~2x and the trade-in hassle.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

I purchased this lens a couple of years ago for my Canon 10D. As soon as I bought it I had back focusing issues with my camera. I tried a couple of these lens and all of them made my 10D back focus. I had to send my brand new lens and 10D into canon to fix. My 10D was over a year old so I had to pay $[...] to fix the problem. After I got my camera back from Canon the focusing has be dead on and the sharpness is amazing. This lens is sharp even wide open at F4.I have 3 Canon L lenses and this is by far my favorite. This lens is well balanced and easy to hand hold. It also doesn't kill your neck after a day of shooting like it's big brother the 70-200 f2.8.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

Very sharp lens and nice zoom range. Fast focusing. However any lens with that focal lenght does need to be used from a monopod or tripod. Why not include the tripod mount with the lens but make it an (expensive) option? In a way it is like selling a car without doors. Just a stupid ploy by the marketing people to make the lens appear cheaper.

This is a great lens - not too heavy or pricey. Quality of the pictures it takes are top notch - contrasty & sharp as a tack.

It is cheaper & lighter than it's IS or f/2.8 brothers & I use it extensively for the kid's football.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA:

Probably the best value in a midrange zoom in Canon's arsenal. It's tack sharp, lightweight and reasonably priced for an "L" series lens. The rugged build, quick, quiet and accurate auto-focus and superior optics truly make it a real bargain and a fun lens to use. One word of caution: Canon's "L" series lenses will quickly spoil you and make you want to spend lots of money for more of them. Not to worry, it'll be money well spent.
